Manager’s report As North America’s leading provider of comprehensive waste management services, our company works hard to maintain its leadership position in a dynamic industry. Early this year we began a company-wide transformation whose goals are: 1) to know more about our customers and how to serv- ice them than anyone else; 2) to use technology to extract more value from the materials we manage, and 3) to contin- uously improve our operational efficiency. Around our com- pany today an enormous amount of effort is being devoted to these goals, and I believe our customers and the commu- nities we serve will be noticing the differences. From where I sit I can already see progress in each of these areas. Our regional approach to customer service is benefit- ing customers all over western New York. We’re extracting larger amounts of landfill gas and converting it into electric- ity to feed the power grid. And as the local landfill operator, we know that efficiency is the name of the game in our end of the business, from planning to permitting to implementa- tion and maintenance. Here are just a few examples of the progress we’re making: • We’re currently building Cell 3 at the landfill, a new 10- acre area where we’ll begin depositing waste later this year. As part of that construction, we are replacing two leachate tanks with a more streamlined storage system to free up space for future development. • In anticipation of already permitted future development in our eastern borrow area, we are creating new sedimenta- tion ponds there. This complies with regulatory require- ments to establish stormwater management one year in advance of construction activities, and positions us to execute our development plans in an efficient way. • We’re converting our odor control system with the addi- tion of new technology. The new system employs organic oils and does not need water, as does our older system, which means that we will be able to run the new system as needed on a year-round basis. The first portion of this system, along approximately 1,500 feet of fence line on Hand Road, will be up and running in August. • Permitting activities with the Town for our proposed liquid solidification system are continuing. This system will be highly efficient to install, operate and maintain, and will expand the range of disposal solutions we can offer our customers in this region. In addition, it will give us the opportunity to create relationships with brand-new customers. So even though our transformation goals are stated in ambitious terms, and they apply to different parts of our company in different ways, I can tell you that they’re already influencing our culture, our approach to our customers, and the things we’re doing today to enable better operations tomorrow. You can get a good look at these and other improvements we’re making at our tenth annual Bar-B-Q & Open House on Friday, August 5. As always, it will be informative and fun—I hope you can join us!
