CFGC cHaMPionS FoR cHilDRen hOnOrED muSiC lEgEnD Dave gRoHl anD CEO Roy MaRSHall

An audience of 300 was star-struck on Thursday, May 12th, as four teenagers from CFGC’s Sonic Teens program took the stage to perform publicly for their first time with their mentor – 15-time

Grammy-winning musician and two-time Emmy-winning director Dave Grohl. They learned how to write music from Grohl while bonding with him over pizza and long chats for months in CFGC’s Sonic Teens program– a Therapeutic Creative Arts program that helps adolescents who cope with depression and trauma to overcome challenges through song writing.

The performance took place on May 12th at the Skirball Cultural Center during CFGC’s “Champions for Children” benefit, which honors community members and mental health professionals who make exceptional contributions to the wellbeing of children and families. Grohl was honored for generously mentoring the Sonic Teens – sharing not only his impressive knowledge of music, but also his passion for helping vulnerable adolescents to build self-confidence and resiliency.

“It was an honor to work with these kids and CFGC on the Sonic Teens program,” said Grohl. “It was such an incredible experience – one that proved the power of music to heal.”

CFGC’s Roy Marshall was honored at Champions for Children for his life-long service as an advocate for mental health and for leading CFGC as its president and CEO. Marshall has been instrumental in CFGC’s growth. Under his guidance, the agency has grown to include six facilities in the San Fernando

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children is highly treatable. But, many parents are reluctant to seek

help. Stigma and contradictory information about ADHD medications are a few contributing factors. But it is also understandable for parents to be confused. There is a very fine line between ADHD symptoms and normal childhood energy, fidgeting and not paying attention. Here are some signs to look for if you suspect your child may have ADHD. If you are not sure, please contact a health or mental health provider for an accurate diagnosis and possible treatment.

Parents are only human. At one time or another, we have all wished we could take back something we have

said or done to our children – especially if we have been stressed, tired or emotional. Some parents are reluctant to apologize to their children because they don’t want to undermine their positions of authority. But the truth is, being brave and mature enough to say you’re sorry to your kids can actually make you a better mother, father or caregiver, AND it can be good for young peoples’ development. Here are four reasons why:

1. owning up to our mistakes sets a good example for our children. Modeling for children HOW to say “I’m sorry” is much more powerful than simply insisting that they do so when they make mistakes. By observing your behavior, your children learn early about empathy and how to take responsibility for their actions. When children are shown appropriate respect, they are more likely to show respect for others.

2. apologizing teaches children that we all make mistakes. Parents appear infallible to young children. When we say we’re sorry when warranted, it teaches our young ones that no one is perfect. They learn that it is OK to make a mistake, as long as we take responsibility and make amends to those we have hurt.

3. apologizing is an opportunity to build mutual respect and a deeper connection with your children. Parents can apologize AND take the opportunity to discuss the situation with their kids and make plans to prevent it from occurring again. This builds open and safe communication, mutual respect and understanding.

4. apologizing doesn’t mean giving up your authority. Stepping up and saying “I’m sorry” will not indicate to your child that he or she does not need to obey your house rules and respect you. Your child still knows who is boss! When you teach your children to both give and receive apologies gracefully and sincerely, you are preparing them to form healthy relationships with authority figures for a lifetime, as well as teaching them to become better leaders themselves.

Michael Steiner was a winner at the Champions for Children event auction on May 12th – and, so were

children and families served by CFGC. Michael made the winning bid for a signed guitar from Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl’s Signature Collection by Gibson. Michael’s $11,500 bid finally beat out another high bidder – singer Paul Stanley from the rock band KISS who graciously said, “OK, let him have it!” The proceeds from the sale of the guitar will help CFGC provide mental health and early intervention services for children and families in need.

Michael’s enthusiasm for winning the guitar came from both family and personal experience. He knows the importance of CFGC’s work because his sister-in-law, Kelly Steiner, is a member of the therapeutic staff team that runs Sonic Teens, a Therapeutic Creative Arts program created by Dr. Brette Genzel- Derman that helps adolescents overcome mental health challenges through music expression. (Grohl worked with Sonic Teens and personally mentored the participating teens.)

“The guitar is amazing, but it’s not the real reason I wanted to contribute money to CFGC,” Michael said. “Until you care for a child with mental health issues, it’s difficult to comprehend the true impact on families. What CFGC and Dave Grohl do helps people who need it most. I was determined to win the guitar because I want to stand behind and take part in what they do.”

Michael also supported CFGC through his company, Steiner Brothers Construction, which was an event sponsor for the Champions for Children benefit. CFGC is grateful to Michael for his generous support, and we hope you really enjoy that awesome guitar!

and Antelope Valleys where it serves thousands of children and families each year. By honoring Grohl and Marshall together, CFGC recognizes that enabling children to thrive is a partnership between the organization and the community.

“It is wonderful to receive this recognition, but the true honor for me is serving in a position that allows me to watch children and families thrive,” said Marshall.

The event raised more than $100,000, which will support CFGC’s mission to empower children and families to achieve health and well-being through innovative mental health services and community programs.
