Sincerely,

Leadership Letter

To Our Friends and SupportersSynchronicity, coincidence, happenstance,

being in the right place at the right time, a twist of fate? How does it happen that we

meet, engage, collaborate and work together? In hindsight, chance meetings may seem purposeful or deliberate.

Yet, looking back, we may also wonder what is it in those chance encounters, which plants the original seed — the seed that takes root and blooms into a project, a plan, or a family.

Each program and service in a Simpson Senior Services Community began as an idea, which was explored, evaluated, tested, reviewed, planned and then launched. In the pages that follow, you will read about people whose lives came together, perhaps by chance, but who have joined together to become powerful programs, services and inspirations. Some have served in Simpson Senior Services programs, and some are Simpson people reaching out beyond the walls of their campus to serve the wider community.

Family meant Simpson Foundation Board members Tony Poluch and David Brown felt a call to serve the communities where elders in their families were living. The Rev. Jim and Mrs. Betty Mundell, charter residents of Jenner’s Pond, established a named fund to help support programming that expresses their values. Janice Townsend, Simpson Gardens resident, continues her outreach and service in her congregation. Siblings Dana, George and Millicent Clark are a powerful force creating a community spirit and culture at Simpson Mid-Town. Nathan and Lolia Thomas celebrate love and good timing, which began in the shadow of WWII.

We are grateful for each resident, family member and volunteer. They are a blessing to and in our communities. On behalf of each member of the Board and staff, thanks to each of them, to you for your support and for the opportunity to serve.

Simpson Foundation Board members Tony Poluch and David Brown have many parallels

in their personal and professional lives. Strong family ties, dedication to civic engagement, community improvement,

justice and service. Their legacies of service are notable. Were it not for Tony’s Mother and David’s Grandmother,

their paths may never have crossed.

MISSION MILESTONES

Provided over

$2.3 MILLION in benevolent care

(financial assistance) and under-compensated care to 132 qualified residents

of Simpson House.

Received one, or more, philanthropic contributions from

839 individual, congregation, foundation, business and

corporate donors.

Celebrated the generosity of forty-four Belmont Circle members,

who contributed

$1,000, OR MORE, to Simpson House.

Anthony J. “Tony” Poluch, Jr. is Bryn Mawr Trust Sr. Vice President, Market Leader & CRA Officer and Co-Chair of the Fair

Lending/CRA Committee. He is active in civic programs including Swim Teams, Girls Softball and Downingtown Youth Football. Poluch is a Past Chair of the Chester County Art Association, Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce, Historic Kennett Square and Land Conservancy of Southern Chester County. He is a member of West Chester Chamber of Commerce, Exton Chamber of Commerce, Chester County Chamber of Business & Industry, and the Chester County Economic Development Council. He is a member of the Simpson Meadows Campus Philanthropy Committee. Tony would say most importantly, he is the son of Simpson Meadows resident, Caroline Poluch.

The Rev. David Brown is Diversity Advisor to the Dean of the Klein College of Media and Communication at Temple University where he

is an Assistant Professor of Instruction, Director of Internships and Field Experience and the Faculty Advisor to the Temple University Black Public Relations Society (TUBPRS). He has served on the staff of several non-profit organizations. The Obama Administration named him “A Champion of Change” for his work in the public, private and faith communities. Brown serves on the board of the Metropolitan Christian Council of Philadelphia, the Council for Relationships and the Philadelphia Film Society. He is a member of the Simpson House Campus Philanthropy Committee. Most importantly, he is the grandson of Simpson House resident, Bertha Bell.

Mother and Son, Grandmother and Grandson, family ties drew Tony and David to a Simpson Community. Using skills, abilities, interests and talents to benefit others drew them to serve on the Philanthropy Committees and Foundation Board. Their dedication and impact is a wonderful and lasting benefit.

The Rev. Samuel James and Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Mundell established the first named Fund to benefit Jenner’s Pond.

It is their dream that distributions from the fund will be used to inform, inspire and involve members of the Jenner’s Pond community by supporting holistic programming for the benefit of residents, staff and related family members.

WELCOMED two new Simpson

Senior Services Board members while

honoring the service of one member who completed his term.

WELCOMED two new Community

Advisory Council members while honoring the service of six Community Advisory

Council members who completed their terms.

Enjoyed the benefit of commitment and

service of

383 community and

resident volunteers.

The Mundells established the Fund as an inclusive and nurturing expression of their life-long Christian commitment to thoughtful

dialogue, interfaith relations, and building bridges of understanding emphasizing Judeo-Trinitarian Christian faith traditions. Seminars, workshops, conferences or events underwritten by the fund may address complex topics such as, religious traditions and practices, ethics, social justice, peace, emotional health, wellness, grief, death and dying.

Betty, a retired home economics teacher, believes opportunities for learning must be ongoing and available to residents, staff and families. Jim, a retired Mechanical Engineer from Southco, Inc. in Concordville, attended and graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary’s summer program. He continues on staff at West Grove United Methodist Church as the Associate Pastor. The Fund is a natural extension of the Mundell’s lives, careers and passions. When Betty and Jim retired and moved to Jenner’s Pond in 1999, Betty was inspired to try quilting when she joined a quilting group offered by Beverly Rhoades. Her first project, a table runner, graces a

table in their cottage. Today Betty concentrates on smaller pieces such as twin size quilts, throws, table runners and hangings. She buys fabrics when they travel. One of her favorite places to shop is Alaska. Her quilting studio is bursting with fabrics, patterns, tools and projects in process. She enjoys making pieces for friends, and always supports the Jenner’s Pond Fall Craft Fair with a handmade treasure.

In addition to his pastoral duties, Jim Chairs the Simpson Foundation Board and Jenner’s Pond Philanthropy Committee. He is a member of the Jenner’s Pond Benevolent Care Fund Committee, Community Advisory Council, Investment Club, Director of the Jenner’s Pond Chorus and was a founding member of the now retired Golf Classic.

Nurturing and enriching the lives of others is a shared passion for Betty and Jim … The Mundell Fund is just the newest expression of their life of service.

MISSION MILESTONES

Honored the service of

82 employees through

employee recognition programs.

Provided more than

9,250 hours of volunteer

service to non-profit community organizations.

Celebrated the

6TH YEAR of service and

partnership with Philabundance, helping

to address food insecurity throughout the Delaware Valley.

Beginning at 10:00 AM, a team of PMBC volunteers reaches out the hand of fellowship to welcome neighbors living in the 19131 zip

code who participate in the “Food Cupboard Distribution — PMBC Drive to End Hunger.” Janice describes herself as a behind the scenes paperwork person. Yet, the first face new participants in the program will find is Janice’s. Her kindness and welcoming spirit guides them through the application and documentation process.

Janice will be the first to explain the Pinn Cupboard is a real team effort. Long before the doors open, members gather to sort and pack the food. Returning participants familiar with the routine know what to expect and how to pick up their groceries. The comfort and dignity of each new participant is important to Janice, and to every Pinn Food Cupboard volunteer. Each volunteer knows it may be hard to ask for help. Friendly faces and a helpful process makes it less difficult for the

newcomers. Janice strives to make sure the newly registered participants are welcomed and guided through the process as efficiently as possible. The PMBC philosophy is embodied in each volunteer

serving through fellowship and community involvement. They live the belief that

neighbors find spiritual inspiration, fellowship, and friendship at Pinn!

Each week on her way home from the Pinn Food Cupboard, Janice thinks about the people she met. The people who depend on the Cupboard are

usually elders, but they may be families with young children, or

any and all people in need from varied and diverse backgrounds who

live in the 19131 zip code. Because of Janice, although they may come through

the door as strangers not knowing what they will find, they leave knowing their questions have been answered, their nervousness reduced, and most importantly, they have received nourishing food for themselves and any family members depending on them.

Supported housing.

That discussion led to a partnership between Simpson Senior Services, Mid-Town Parish UMC, the U.S. Department of Housing and

Urban Development and the City of Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority. Simpson Mid-Town, dedicated and opened in 2005, is the beautiful culmination of the vision.

However, a beautiful structure with lovely apartments is not enough. Support, enrichment and engagement transforms a building into a community. So, The Rev. Reginald A. Monte, Jr., a founding Board member encouraged Dana C. Clark, Sr., one of his parish leaders, to join the Board of Simpson Mid-Town and to help create and nurture a thriving community within the wonderful new building. Dana accepted the challenge and began his first term on the Board in 2007. When he finished his second term, his brother, The Rev. George R. Clark, Jr. joined the Board, beginning his service in 2012, the same year Dana termed off the Board. When the Board transitioned to a Campus Advisory Council (CAC) George’s commitment continued and he joined the CAC. He served enthusiastically through

2017. Dana’s and George’s sister Millicent served side-by-side with George beginning in 2014 and continues as a leader actively serving on the CAC. She is currently in her second term.

These three, siblings in service, have seen so much change, evolution and growth. They have inspired, planned and run educational opportunities, social events and celebrations including computer classes, holiday celebrations, picnics, bar-b-ques and milestone celebrations for the 5th and 10th anniversaries, to name a few. Each community member comes with rich stories of family, work, service and lives well lived. Dana, George and Millicent know every face and treasure each elder. The forty lovely affordable apartments in the 4-story retirement living community at 1001 Green Street in Center City, Philadelphia, have become a community inspiration for renewal and rebuilding. The apartments provide more than shelter. They provide community for elders who want to live and share their lives in a caring and active environment. Dana, George and Millicent have helped to weave the tapestry rich with experiences and mutual blessings.

At a dark time in world history during WWII, young African Americans who aspired to become pilots faced huge obstacles. The

pressures of the war saw President Franklin D. Roosevelt expanding the pilot training program in the US. Although racial segregation remained the rule in the Armed Forces as well as much of the country, the “Tuskegee Experiment” began to change history — for the better. Nathan Thomas is one of those history makers. Nathan will tell you it all began in 1945 when he joined the service. Leaving Delaware State College in his freshman year he was drafted into the Army and learned he was selected for training at Tuskegee Army Air Field. He trained in P37s, P38s, P39s, B25s, and B17s. Called the Tuskegee Experiment, Army leaders were skeptical African Americans could fly. They could fly and they did fly — with distinction! When Eleanor Roosevelt flew with Tuskegee pilots, she became their outspoken champion. Nicknamed the Red Tails,

the Tuskegee Airmen escorted bombers and helped end WWII in Europe. When the war ended, Nathan returned to Delaware State to begin his sophomore year. That is where in he met Lolia Tilghman, then beginning her freshman year.

Lolia remembers walking with girlfriends when they met a couple of men who were talking about airplanes. One man in particular started talking with her. He helped her take her bags up to the third floor of Lora Hall. She recalls a very cordial conversation. Academics were the priority, but they made time for each other. They met for breakfast or lunch. They enjoyed walks on the Delaware State campus. They both agreed things went very well. Their families met, they got married and have been husband and wife for 68 years. Had it not been for WWII and the “Tuskegee Experiment,” they may never have been on campus together. They were blessed with three children — and thank Delaware State for getting them together.

W ith a commitment to being an integral part of rather than simply located in our neighborhoods, more than 100 local,

regional and national non-profit organizations know they can count on volunteers who live or work at Simpson House, Simpson Meadows, Jenner’s Pond, Simpson Gardens or Simpson Mid-Town.

The organizations include a wide range of size, scope and mission, reflecting the interests, skills and abilities of the volunteers themselves. The organizations served in 2018 include the Jennersville Regional Hospital, Aid for Friends, Newark Symphony Orchestra, Longwood Gardens, Winterthur Museum and Gardens, League of Women Voters, The Garage Community Center, Seeing Eye Puppy Program, Main Line Animal Rescue, ESL Tutoring and the Chadds Ford Historical Society. Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, thrift shops, many local libraries as well as knitting programs creating caps and other items for babies, native-American communities, underserved communities and chemotherapy

patients, educational organizations and religious congregations round out the diverse list.

The Simpson Senior Services community partnership with Philabundance continues. Annually residents and staff collect and contribute nonperishable food items. Staff teams serve in the South Philadelphia Hunger Relief Center, Kennett Area Community Service Food Cupboard or the Lord’s Pantry in Downingtown. During the six years of this partnership, we have provided over 11,000 lbs. of food.

In 2018 residents and staff of Simpson Senior Services communities provided more than 9,250 documented hours of direct service. Independent Sector, the national coalition of nonprofits, foundations, and corporate giving programs, estimates the value of volunteer time in Pennsylvania in 2018 to be $24.94 per hour — making the value of our combined service in 2019 alone nearly a quarter of a million dollars. Each hour served helps improve quality of life for all.

The residents and staff members of each Simpson Senior Services (SSS) community serve their

local communities with their time and talent!

Each person’s life experiences shape his or her attitudes & behaviors, including charitable giving. Generous gifts by caring donors do more than suggest housing & services for senior adults are important. Donors making

gifts believe in supporting our nearly 155-year-old mission to provide excellent care, services & retirement living options to elders. Your support is gratifying & encourages us in the work we do every day. We are grateful to each donor who made a philanthropic gift in 2018. Gifts support financial assistance to qualified residents who can no longer afford the full cost of care, purchase equipment, renovate facilities & build endowments. If you discover an error or omission in this listing, please accept our apology & call Lynn Seay in the Philanthropy Office at 610.660.9340 so we may correct our records.

We look forward to your continuing generous support.
