INCEPTION

Bharath idasan

University, named after

the revolutionary Tamil

Poet Bharathidasan,

was established in the

year 1982. I t was

recognised by the

U n i v e r s i t y G r a n t s

Commission (UGC) in

1985. It is a member of

the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and

Commonwealth Universities. Celebrating its silver

jubilee in the year 2007, this young and vibrant

institution continues to make rapid strides in the

fields of higher education, research and extension

activities. Aptly the University has been adjudged

as one of the most reputed Universities in the

country having been accredited with “A” grade by

the National Assessment and Accreditation

Council (NAAC). The serene, unpolluted ambience

of the campus provides a quiet and conducive

atmosphere for higher education and research.

CAMPUS

The Institution with a sprawling 750 acre

The University has grown from strength to

strength with an excellent research base, offering

quality Post-Graduate and Research programmes

through its 40 and odd Schools and Departments

and Research Centers. It includes the prestigious

Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), an

autonomous institute ranked as one of the top

ranking management institutes in the country for its

MBA program.

In response to the quality of education

imparted and need-based courses many

programmes are funded by the UGC under

innovative programmes; accordingly, the Post-

Graduate student strength in the campus has

increased more than five-fold from 361 in 2002 to

1625 in 2007.

A feather in the cap in this regard is the

5-year and 6-year integrated programs that admit

students who are qualified at plus two level

exposing them to university education at an early

stage in academic career. These integrated

programs provide a fast track for early graduation.

Also it facilitates to break off with an under graduate

degree or for lateral entry for a PG degree for fast

learners. These programs also aim at instilling

fortitude in the young minds to take up research

and competitive examinations like NET / SLET /

GATE. Many students get fellowships from

organizations like Indian National Science

Academy for summer projects and are encouraged

to complete their final project work in premier

institutes like Center for Cellular and Molecular

For example some students of the Department of Biology, Indian Institute of Science, National Institute of Immunology, to name a few; are awarded student fellowships to go abroad for their project work in reputed research institutions.

In recogni t ion of the mer i tor ious contributions and generous funds received to the tune of Rs.90 Crores so far, for research projects in different disciplines, the University has established centers for: 1) High Pressure Research, 2) Nonlinear Dynamics, 3) Nano-Science and Nanotechnology 4) Remote Sensing 5) Geographic Information Technology, 6) Bioinorganic Chemistry and 7) Pheromone Technology in the various departments.

The University provides separate hostel facilities, 3 for women and 4 for men with furnished accommodation and mess facilities. To encourage the sports talent, the University has a spacious play ground adjoining the hostels with a 400 meter standard athletic track, an outdoor sports complex with play grounds for ball badminton, volley ball, hand ball and basket ball; this also includes a yoga centre which runs a part time course on yoga. Every year a cultural program, BARD-FEST is conducted in the campus wherein students from different colleges participate.

The main library is well equipped with a large number of books, professional journals and popular magazines; it also provides internet connection and digital library facility to the user enabling access to thousands of e-journals,

libraries and databases around the world. Apart

from this, each department has a well equipped

library with a rich collection of books in its

discipline.

Each Department has a team of dedicated

renowned faculty members with excellent

academic records. Many of them have won

national and international awards and have tie ups

with reputed research institutes across the world

that facilitate exchange of students, scholars and

faculty. Several research projects funded by the

National, International agencies, and industries are

in progress in different departments. National and

Internat ional Seminars, Symposia and

Conferences are held periodically by different

departments to provide an excellent exposure to

the young post-graduate students to update their

knowledge in emerging areas in relevant

disciplines. Apart from research grants received

through national and international agencies, the

University also allots funds to each department

every year and also provides research fellowships

to promote quality research. From its inception till

date, more than 6000 research papers and over

300 books have been published; many of these

have been published in high impact factor journals

with very high citation index claiming international

recognition.

In addition to the very good Instrumentation

and laboratory facility including high speed internet

access (for students and faculty) in each

department, a Computer Center, a Central

FACULTY

CENTRAL FACILITIES

Workshop, Departmental Store, Health Care Center,

Biomedical Diagnostic Laboratory, State Bank of India

branch and Canteen cater to the needs of the

students in the campus.

Most of the alumni, comprising post-graduates

and research scholars, are well placed in various

positions as doctoral, post-doctoral fellows and

scientists in reputed national and international

laboratories, as decision makers, faculty in

educational institutions and in Non-Governmental

Organizations. Some of the courses are tailored to

generate self employment. Accordingly, satisfied with

the quality performance of the alumni of

Bharathidasan University, many international

research institutions readily consider favorably

request for granting placement in research projects, if

the applicant is from Bharathidasan University.

In consonance with the current view that Institutions of

Higher Learning should open out to global competition

and move towards self-sustenance through external

cash flow, an independent unit called Bharathidasan

University Business Development Centre (BDU-BDC)

has been established. Within the short span of four

years the BDC has facilitated many reputed Industries

/ Institutions to sign memorandum of understanding

(MoU) with the University on various aspects.

INSTITUTE OF ENTERPRENUERSHIP AND

CAREER DEVELOPMENT (IECD)

PATENT CELL

STUDENTS COUNSELLING AND GRIEVANCE

REDRESSAL CELL

The IECD, established as an autonomous

institute aims to serve the formal and nonformal

community on low cost and low technology basis.

Designing its own need based syllabi, it offers more

than 100 short term programs which are

completely job or enterprenuership oriented. The

courses are offered through onsite and offsite

modes. In this line the non-student force of the

University area is also immensely benefitted. The

IECD also organizes campus recruitments for

students in different disciplines inviting prospective

employers.

Patent is an index of intellectual

contribution. Researchers should come away from

the traditional motto of “Publish or Perish” to

“Patent and Protect” their research findings. Some

of the papers published from the university have

international acclaim but so far only nine products

have been patented. Hence, to pave the way for

external cash flow to augment the sustenance of

the Institution and sensitize the staff and students

about the significance and potentials, a patent cell

has been established and is functioning since April,

2009.

To redress the grievances of students who

come from far and near an exclusive Students

Counseling and Grievance Cell with touch screen

facility has been introduced in January 2009. The

students' problems are redressed at the earliest

mediated by the Cell.

A novel Thatkal Scheme is also in vogue

which enables the students to get their certificates

from the office on the same day. (Phone No. :

2407272, 2407575)

The University has over 35 Departments /

Schools / Centres such as Adult, Continuing &

Extension Education, Animal Science, Bio-

Technology, Chemistry, Commerce, Computer

Science, Earth Sciences, Economics, Educational

Technology, Energy, English, Management,

Mathematics, Microbiology, Physical Education,

Physics, Plant Science, Social Work, Sociology,

History and Tamil. There are also three specially

funded institutes. viz National Facility for Marine

Gyanobacterial (NFMC), Centre for Non-linear

Dynamics, Centre for Remote Sensing and the

Department of Library located in this University.

Apart from these, there is a Centre for Canadian

Studies, Centre for Periyar Studies, Centre for

Bharathidasan Studies and an Academic Staff

College, a Community College, a Computer Centre,

an Informatics Centre (INTERNET), Bio Informatics

Centre, IECD, and a Central Workshop. Apart from

the schools, Departments, and centers of research

the university has in its fold 99 Arts and Science

Colleges and 13 approved institutions.

The information furnished in this

prospectus is just a bird's eye view of the
