System description
R+F Ecowall allows the construction of retaining structures with slopes of up to 85° without the use of
concrete. The front facing consists of layered, dry stonework, whose appearance can be adapted to
individual architectural needs. This dry stonework is stabilised by a specially galvanized steel mesh, and
the backfill soil behind the facing is reinforced with TenCate geosynthetics. The result is a very stable,
steep retaining structure with high load-bearing capacity.

Facing System
R+F Ecowall is a facing system for steep slopes and soil-retaining structures reinforced by geosynthetics. The
system is primarily used for stabilising stone- or gravel-filled front surfaces with a maximum slope of 85°, but
may also be used in combination with vegetated surfaces up to an angle of 70°.
R+F Ecowall requires no maintenance. Furthermore, the stone layering also provides shelter for insects and
other small fauna.. And the additional use of climbing and hanging plants opens up a large variety of different
design options.
R+F Ecowall utilises steel-mesh grids which are joined together to form an angled interlocking facing unit.
Loads are transferred to the geosynthetic reinforcement products TenCate Polyfelt Rock PEC or TenCate
Miragrid GX by friction between these and the steel mesh. Layers of stone or gravel-fill material are applied
directly behind the front mesh. The whole system is then backfilled with soil of adequate bearing capacity.

System components
1. Facing System
R+F Ecowall system consists of soil and a welded
steel wire front mesh. The mesh is produced with
eyelets on one side and connected on-site with push-
through rods. The great advantage of this well-
proven connection system is its easy handling. The
desired slope angle is achieved by means of
anchoring hooks.
If an extremely thin layer of gravel facing is desired,
an additional inside mesh may be installed at a
distance of approx. 200 - 300 mm from the front
mesh. This helps to minimise the amount of gravel
needed.
Anti-corrosive protection consists of an aluminium-
zinc alloy (GALFAN). This ensures 3 to 5 times longer
service life than in conventional galvanized coatings
of comparable thickness. It may even be used along
roads with de-icer application.
The wire thickness of the front mesh (6 mm)
guarantees high torsional stability. The mesh opening
size is 125 x 125 mm. For gravel with 40 - 125 mm
grain size an additional fine inside mesh may be
installed.
2. Geosynthetic reinforcement
TenCate Polyfelt or TenCate Miragrid
3. Backfill material
TenCate high-strength geosynthetics stabilise and
reinforce the backfill soil. The properties and
behaviour of the resulting composite material mean
that the structure can accomodate unusually high
loads.
TenCate Miragrid GX is a high-tensile geogrid made
of polyester fibres with a polymeric protective
coating. The open structure and high flexibility of the
fibres ensures an excellent interlock with coarse
soils, thus providing high load transmission.
TenCate Polyfelt Rock PEC is a high-tensile
compound made of polyester yarns and a nonwoven
geotextile. Due to its in-plane flow capacity it can be
used together with cohesive soil infill materials.
n most cases the on-site soil can be used, provided
it is compactable and has adequate frictional
properties. Frost-resistant fill material is required at
the front of the structure to a depth appropriate to
the local climate .

Installation
R+F Ecowall does not require a foundation. All it takes is a levelled, compacted and stable/load-bearing
subgrade. The geosynthetic reinforcement products are installed with the required anchor length. The facing
system is positioned and fixed with steel hooks. Then the first layer of backfill is applied. Room is left at for the
dry-stone facing immediately behind the shuttering, and the stones placed after backfill compaction.
