I was asked to speak to a

group of seniors at their monthly meeting on

April 1 of this year. There was some concern on my part as it was April Fool’s Day, but I went anyway. It turned out to be an enjoyable event with some of the best desserts I have ever sampled. The members were interested in what we had done at KSU with our OLLI program and I gave them a rundown of how the program began and how it has evolved over the years. There were 46 people at the meeting with women slightly outnumbering the men. What they were looking for was ideas they could put into play which would enrich their lives and make their retirement more exciting. I asked them what they would enjoy doing. Was there anything they had wanted to do but never got around to doing it? Many raised their hands, and I began to write their suggestions on a clipboard. The results were amazing. They wanted to find a young person they could mentor. They wanted to learn a new language, learn to play music (Mr. Bernard Osher began taking piano lessons at the age of 80), learn

how to dance, start a new hobby, write their autobiography and personal memoirs, learn how to draw, paint and use a computer. They wanted to volunteer to assist a good cause. The suggestions came fast and furious and 11 sheets of the clipboard were full of their ideas. As it turned out, they didn’t need any suggestions from me. They simply needed to express their feelings about what they would enjoy doing. There are many organizations that welcome volunteers. Hospitals, benevolent associations, schools, places of worship, foster care homes, charities, people who are confined to their homes due to illness, and hundreds of other opportunities to assist someone or some cause. The beauty of retirement is there is really nothing we must do. How we spend our time is up to us.OLLI can provide solutions to many of the activities mentioned above. The people I spoke to wished they had an OLLI they could take advantage of. Take advantage of your OLLI. Get involved. I sincerely believe you will be happier doing some of the things you always wanted to do but never got around to doing them.Hope to see you in class soon.

MICHELLE’S VIEW

Changes in our economy

have resulted in many individuals over 50 in the unenviable position of searching for a new profession. Be encouraged! Are you aware of the nu-merous inspirational stories of people that have found success later in life?

Harland “Colonel” Sanders started Kentucky Fried Chicken when he was 65. At the age of 75, Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa. Benjamin Franklin was the oldest person to sign the Declaration of Independence

when he was 70. At the age of 52, despite battles with diabetes and arthritis, Ray Kroc began building the McDonald’s brand. Maya Angelou was in her 60s when her poetry and books became popular, and Ronald Reagan was the oldest man elected President at 69.

There are so many uplifting examples like these that we can learn from. Our mis-sion at OLLI is to provide continuing education and training experiences to put individuals 50 and older in the best pos-sible position to succeed. Better late than never I always say!

Fill each 9x9 grid with digits so that each column, row, and 3x3 section contain the numbers between 1 to 9. Fill in the missing digits and complete the grid.

A move is incorrect if:

• Any row contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any column contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9 • Any 3x3 grid contains more than one of the same number from 1 to 9
