CRAFTS COUNCIL ANNOUNCEMENTS Letter To The Editor Re: Crafts Council of Ireland Outreach Bulletin No. 1 I wish to forward a complaint with regards to the above mentioned document. In this document, I was angered to read the inclu- sion of the following: "Knitwear designer Edmund McNulty is enthusiastic The advantage of oper- ating in a bustling craft environment as opposed to a lonely studio are obvious; "I don't think I would be as enthusiastic if I had a workshop on my own up the side of a mountain in Donegal," he says. The above underlined statement is a mis- quote and has been taken entirely out of context. This text appeared in a local Dundalk newspaper last April but was in fact a mis-interpretation of information given at the time. It has annoyed me greatly that this has been used now by the Crafts Council of Ireland in their promotion. My permission was nei- ther sought nor granted to have this printed in the Crafts Council 'Outreach' document. This has caused considerable upset to me and to my Donegal connections. I request a full retraction in the next 'Stop- press' issue and 'Outreach' bulletin. Furthermore, I require that my full consent be obtained prior to the printing of any future promotional literature, involving 'Edmund McNulty Knitwear' whether writ- ten or photographic by the Crafts Council of Ireland or Contemporary Crafts on the Border. Sincerely, Edmund McNulty. Re: Crafts Council of Ireland Outreach
Bulletin No. 1
I wish to forward a complaint with regards to the above mentioned document. In this document, I was angered to read the inclusion of the following:
"Knitwear designer Edmund McNulty
is enthusiastic The advantage of operating in a bustling craft environment as opposed to a lonely studio are obvious; "I don't think I would be as enthusiastic if I had a workshop on my own up the side of a mountain in Donegal," he says.
The above underlined statement is a misquote and has been taken entirely out of context. This text appeared in a local Dundalk newspaper last April but was in fact a mis-interpretation of information given at the time.
It has annoyed me greatly that this has been used now by the Crafts Council of Ireland in their promotion. My permission was neither sought nor granted to have this printed in the Crafts Council 'Outreach' document.
This has caused considerable upset to me and to my Donegal connections.
I request a full retraction in the next 'Stop-
press' issue and 'Outreach' bulletin.
Furthermore, I require that my full consent be obtained prior to the printing of any future promotional literature, involving 'Edmund McNulty Knitwear' whether written or photographic by the Crafts Council of Ireland or Contemporary Crafts on the Border.
Sincerely,
Edmund McNulty.

Showcase Enquiries As you probably know, Catherine Jordan, Showcase Co-ordinator for the Crafts Council of Ireland has been on Maternity Leave since September. She has now resumed work and is available on 01-294 2574 to answer any queries regarding Showcase.
Bernadette Fagan of EuroFairs 01-295 8185, continues to look after any queries relating to bookings, stand allocation, subsidy allocation, stand layout, catalogue entries, etc.
For information on PAYMENTS you have made or that are outstanding you should contact Ann Fergus, Accounts Department at EuroFairs on 01-295 8185.
Jurying at Showcase 1999
As has always been the procedure and in order to maintain the high quality standards of the Village, the jury will again be asked to patrol these areas at Showcase 1999.
If it is felt that any exhibitor in the Village or New Faces areas has fallen below these high standards, they will be informed in writing, after the fair and will be offered help to improve.
Any exhibitor who does not wish to avail of the Crafts Council's help and fails to improve the following year, will be asked to leave the Village.
Stand Availability
All stands at Showcase 1999 are now fully booked out and the waiting list has been closed. Any stands that become available between now and January, 17th will be offered to those on our waiting list and applicants will be informed in writing, but it is unlikely that stands will become available at this late stage
For craftworkers who do not have a stand at Showcase 1999 but who wish to apply to exhibit at Showcase 2000, all craftworkers who are registered with the Crafts Council of Ireland will be sent information on jurying, application procedure and stand availability for Showcase 2000 in March / April 1999.
Cluster Marketing in the Village
As you know the Village is being segmented at Showcase 1999. There will be three areas in the Village in 1999, divided as follows:
• Interiors and Tabletop • Fashion and Fashion Accessories • Crafts & Gifts
The segmented areas will be clearly marked in the catalogue to facilitate buyers at the fair.
Subsidies 1999
As you are aware, the closing date for subsidy applications was the 19th June and all application forms have now been processed.
Having processed the subsidy applications, there are approximately 6 subsidies left over and all Crafts Council registered stand holders who do not already have a subsidy will be included in a lottery for these stands after the fair.
At Showcase 1999 a total of 120 stands will be subsidised by the Crafts Council. Any monies not dispensed in subsidy under the new 1999 scheme will be re-invested in intensive marketing of all craft companies at Showcase including a newly designed catalogue and more prominent directional markings at the fair.
Clarification Subsidies will relate to the individual craftworker and not to the company name, when counting up the years of subsidy received. In other words, all subsidies received by an 'individual craftworker' will be counted and not just those of their most recent company.
Good News from Showcase 1998
Our survey conducted by Wilton Research shows that Showcase orders increased by a third, from £24m in 1997 to £32m in 1998. The main increases in orders were in Giftware and Tabletop and all craft areas showed strong increases, particularly the Village.
