New Look Cougars Ready for 2014-15New Look Cougars Ready for 2014-15

College of Charleston women’s basketball found one of the best in the business on April 24, 2014, as the program announced that Candice M. Jackson, a rising star in the coaching profession who previously spent three seasons as an assistant coach and recrui ng coordinator at Duke University, was coming to The College as it’s seventh head coach.

An integral part of the Blue Devils back-to-back NCAA Elite Eight appearances in 2012 and 2013, Jackson’s hire instantly excited the Cougar fan base as CofC con nues to posi on itself as one of the top rising programs within the women’s game.

OUTLOOKConsidering the loss of two of the programs top all- me contributors in Alyssa Frye and Jill Brown to gradua on, the College of Charleston women’s basketball family knows that the full implementa on of coach Jackson’s on and off the court ethos will take me, but that it will be done so with an eye to the future. The Cougars return eight le er-winners from last year’s 18-15 team that fi nished third overall in the Colonial Athle c Associa on, but returns just 43 percent of total points scored and just 35 percent of games started. Gone are Frye and versa le swing guard Afreyea Tolbert who combined to average 28.6 points per game last season, as well as Brown, the Cougars’ fl oor-general who fi nished her career as the programs career leader in assists, steals, starts, games and minutes played. Either Frye or Tolbert led the Cougars in scoring in 25 of 35 games last season and only fi ve le er-winners return who averaged more than 10 minutes

per game: Mikaela Hopkins (19.5), Bre Bolden (23.3), Christy Hewa (16.8), Jazz Green (13.7) and Erin Hall (11.9).

Joining the established are fellow returners Shannon Hines, Breannah Davis-Bloom and Courtney Gardner, who all return with an addi onal year of experience under their belt.

One of the most exci ng aspects of the 2014-15 season is the talented crop of newcomers that will be donning the maroon and white for the fi rst me. Leading the group is junior Jacqueline Luna-Castro, a transfer from UC Santa Barbara who spent the 2013-14 season on the sidelines (NCAA transfer guidelines) and in the gym, ge ng bigger, faster and stronger. A dynamic forward whose physical-ity on the low-block acts as a perfect complement to her perimeter shoo ng – Luna-Castro will be an exci ng addi- on to the team this season.

Joining Luna-Castro is a talented class of three freshmen, that includes 6-5 center Zoe Wallis from Chesterfi eld, Mo., New York point guard Shiclasia Brown and fellow ball-handler Shanique Heard, who comes to Charleston from Murfreesboro, Tenn. Wallis, a McDonalds all-Ameri-can team nominee will only benefi t from a year cul va ng her game alongside Hopkins, while Brown and Heard will depu ze for one another, ac ng as point-guard by commi ee.

Junior Umass transfer Nola Henry also joins the program in 2014-15, but will have to sit out the season per NCAA

transfer rules. Henry, strong in most every aspect of the game, brings instant leadership and experience to the Cougar locker-room and will help provide guidance for The College’s inexperienced corps of freshmen point guards.

With Luna-Castro, Hewa , Wallis and returning all-con-ference selec on Hopkins, the Cougars will be a far more post-centric team in 2014-15 than previous itera ons. While last year’s a ack – courtesy of Brown’s court-vision – was very good at ge ng out in to transi on and knocking down shots from the perimeter, it some mes lacked the defensive for tude needed to create fast break opportuni es against the conference’s best teams. Since arriving in April, Coach Jackson has worked diligently to create a more physical, hard-nosed team that rebounds well, plays with intensity on the defensive end and can manufacture baskets both on the run and in the half-court.

Helping Coach Jackson to achieve these goals are return-ing perimeter talents Bre Bolden and Erin Hall. Bolden, a 5-11 off -guard from Edgewater, Md., was a revela on last season, averaging 8.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 1.6 spg, all of which helped her to earn all-freshman team honors. Hall, a sharp-shoo ng transfer from Wake Forest, started the 2013-14 season in sparkling form scoring 18 points in an exhibi on with Lander before leading the Cougars in points with 17 against UNC Greensboro just two weeks later. A er being slowed by injury for much of the season, Hall will surely be looking for an impac ul fi nal season at The College.

Q & A WITH HEAD COACH CANDICE M. JACKSON

Q: What is your primary point of emphasis right now as you begin to gear up for next season?

CJ: “Toughness. Toughness will be something that plays a big role in our ability to be successful. We also want to play fast, so we’ll need to work on some things defensively that allow us to get out in transi on.”

Q: As a former player and assistant coach at some very high-level ins tu ons, what lessons or experiences are you most looking forward to ins lling in this College of Charleston program?

CJ: “I would say it’s hard-work. As a player, I wasn’t the fastest or the strongest, but I worked hard, was smart and had a good understanding of the game. I understood the basics…passing, shoo ng, cu ng and defending. Those are concepts I worked relessly on.

Q: What do you expect from your student-athletes off the court?

CJ: “I believe that the student part of student-athlete comes fi rst. While it’s important for our program to achieve success on the court, upholding The College’s aca-demic mission statement will always be our top priority. In terms of character, integrity and academic excellence, our staff and our administra on have very high expecta- ons.”

Q: Last Ques on: What is your ul mate goal as a head coach?

CJ: “Ul mately, I want to help our student-athletes be-come champions in basketball, in the classroom and in life.”

College of Charleston Introduces New Women's Basketball Coach Candice Jackson ANDREW MILLER The Post and Courier – April 29, 2014 When Candice M. Jackson heard the College of Charleston was looking for a new women's basketball coach, she immediately reached out to one of her best friends in the business - Natasha Adair.

Adair and Jackson were assistant coaches together at Wake Forest and became close during their two seasons there before both moved on to other coaching jobs.

Adair, who over the past two seasons compiled a 35-31 record as the College of Charleston's head coach, recently became the head coach at Georgetown University. Jackson, who spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Duke, wanted to know more about the Charleston job. So she went straight to her old friend.

It didn't take long for Jackson, 31, to realize that this was a job she was going to pursue.

"Natasha is actually one of my mentors in this business," said Jackson, who was officially introduced as the Cougars head coach Tuesday afternoon at TD Arena. "We're very close and she and I talked a lot about this job.

"She told me a lot about the program. We've been bouncing ideas off of each other for the last two years, so when this opportunity came up it was a no brainer for me to go after it. I kind of had the inside scoop."

As Jackson and Charleston athletic director Joe Hull toured the downtown campus, it became apparent to the former Michigan State star that this was the place for her. If offered the job, she knew she would accept.

"You walk around, you see how friendly the people are and the support system in place and I just knew this was where I wanted to be," Jackson said. "I don't think Joe had to sell this place one bit. It kind of sells itself."

Jackson said she and Adair have similar coaching philosophies. Like Adair, Jackson wants to push the ball up the floor and use defense to create turnovers and easy baskets.

"It will kind of be an extension of what Natasha has done here," Jackson said. "I have my own style, but we're going to move our feet, we're going to get up and down the court, but the average fan will see a few different half-court sets.

"We'll probably press more and be a little more aggressiveness on the defensive end of the floor. But other than that, it'll be a lot of things that Natasha did that made this team so successful."

Jackson met briefly with the Cougar players on Monday. Forward Breanna Bolden, a rising sophomore, said she's excited to see what Jackson brings to the program.

"She's an amazing person," Bolden said. "She's really interesting. She seems like she's going to be a great coach. I'm excited. Having coach Adair leave was disappointing, but I understand that coaching is a business and things like that are going to happen. I think we got a great coach to replace her."

Hull said Jackson was the obvious choice for the position.

"Candice just blew everyone on the committee away during the interview process," Hull said. "We had some very strong candidates, but Candice was head-and-shoulders above the rest."

Jackson, 31, was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Duke University for the past three seasons. The Blue Devils made back-to-back NCAA Elite Eight appearances in 2012 and 2013.

Jackson also spent two years at Wake Forest and four seasons at Richmond as an assistant coach.

Candice Jackson brings late father's influence to head coaching gig at College of Charleston GRAHAM COUCH Lansing State Journal – April 30, 2014 Candice Jackson spoke nervously and from the heart, poised but brimming with emotion.

At a mere 31 years old — not so far removed from her playing days at Everett High School and Michigan State University — she had just been introduced Tuesday as the new women’s basketball coach at the College of Charleston. A Division I program all her own.

Her father, Larry, would have loved to share in this moment. So she made sure he did.

“He’s the reason why I coach today,” Jackson said to the folks on hand, including her mother and two sisters, and cameras live streaming the event on the internet. “I grew up watching him coach. And I grew up seeing how excited he was to see young people grow and thrive and flourish. And, so to you, I’m going to tell you, team, what he gave to me, I’m going to give to you.”

And with that, Jackson’s first promise as a head coach was tied to her first coach, the man she cherished, with the big heart, big smile and biggest voice in the gym.

“You always knew he was there,” Jackson later said of her father in a phone interview.

Larry, a longtime youth basketball coach in Lansing, died almost 10 years ago from a heart attack brought on by complications from diabetes. He was 57.

“Anything he could possibly do for (his players) to make them better players and better people, that’s what he wanted to do,” she continued.

And thus is the framework for Jackson’s coaching philosophy — people first. Not just the player, the whole person.

It’s carried her from MSU as a graduate assistant, through three stops as an assistant coach — at Richmond, Wake Forest and, most recently, for her former coach at MSU, Joanne P. McCallie, at Duke.

There was no youthful shtick or bravado from Jackson Tuesday at the podium, or in our later conversation. Just a few deep breaths and the maturity and vibrancy that led College of Charleston athletic director Joe Hull to say she “took over the room the moment she walked in” for her interview.

A decade removed from playing, Jackson has done a ton of coaching — all with this opportunity in mind.

“When I took the job at Duke, Coach P knew that I wanted to be a head coach eventually, and she spent time with me, training me and grooming me,” said Jackson, who also heavily credited her “mentor,” Duke assistant and former MSU assistant Al Brown. “She gave me the opportunity to put it all on my shoulders and have me make decisions. She has prepared me over the years.”

McCallie, who coached MSU from 2000-07 before leaving for Duke, could help Jackson with the nuances of the game, and the decisions and responsibilities required of a head coach. Other gifts, however, were natural, or ingrained in Jackson at a much earlier age.

“Candice is a wonderful listener,” McCallie said Tuesday. “She’s an excellent communicator. She did a great job of being able to demand from our student-athletes, but at the same time being able to collaborate with them.”

For McCallie, Jackson’s climb to the head coaching ranks is a thrill. Jackson was McCallie’s first recruit at MSU, Larry the first parent to visit Breslin during her tenure in East Lansing.

Larry died early in Jackson’s season as a grad assistant for McCallie (2004-05), a season that ended in the national championship game.

“I always felt like when I talked to Larry, I promised him I would care for his daughter, and take care of his daughter in the best way that I could,” McCallie said. “And I’m very grateful that I’ve had that chance to see Candice, to kind of see her through to this point, because I know he would be so proud.”

Jackson’s high school coach certainly is. Before her injury-plagued career at MSU (2000-04), Jackson starred for Johnny Jones’ ferocious Everett teams of the late 1990s and early 2000s, reaching the state finals her senior year.

“She’s one of my favorite players of all time, boys or girls,” said Jones, also a longtime friend of her father’s. “She has great rapport with people.”

The College of Charleston gig is one Jackson had her eye on. Her close friend and former colleague at Wake Forest, Natasha Adair, turned the program around the last two years, before leaving to be the head coach at Georgetown.

Now the job is Jackson’s. That means a lot. It would have meant a lot to Larry, too.

“It’s something he and I talked about before his passing, me being a head coach,” Jackson said. “… This day is a dream come true, for me and for him.”

If he was around …

“There would be a lot of laughter, a lot of laughter. A lot of jokes, and him just really making sure that I am ready for this,” Jackson said. “Him asking me the hard questions. Him talking to me about X’s and O’s. And kind of seeing where we’re different, seeing what he would do versus what I would do.”

Bolden Eyeing Improvement Ahead Of Sophomore Season RYAN MADDEN CofCSports.com – September 16, 2014 2013-14 was a season of success for the College of Charleston women’s basketball team. A 19-15 overall record, a third place finish in The Colonial and an appearance in the semifinals of the Women’s Basketball Invitational all marked steps in the right direction for a program on the rise.

One of the primary catalysts for last season’s achievements was the play of freshman off-guard, Breanna Bolden. A native of Edgewater, Md., Bolden started 25 games for the Cougars as a true freshman, averaging 8.5 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game en route to garnering CAA all-rookie team honors.

“I’m proud of my freshman season,” said Bolden. “I learned a lot, especially from some of the older players on the team, and I feel like I grew as a person and as a basketball player.”

While the Cougars will certainly look to build on their recent successes, the 2014-15 edition of Cougar basketball is set to have a much different look to it than its previous iterations. Gone are the exploits of some of the program’s all-time leaders in Alyssa Frye, Jill Brown and Afreyea Tolbert and in comes a new class of Cougars – all of whom will now look to Bolden for leadership.

On making the shift from a wide-eyed freshman to a more seasoned returner, Bolden said, “We have some good newcomers, including some really good freshman guards as well as Jackie (Luna-Castro) who was with us last season as a redshirt. I think we all have good chemistry and I’m excited to see what we’re capable of.”

Also adding to the equation is the arrival of first year head coach Candice M. Jackson, who Bolden says has made an immediate impact on the team’s work ethic and preparations for the upcoming season.

“I’m really excited to play Coach Jackson’s style,” said Bolden. “We’re having to work harder than ever before. The conditioning especially has been really tough and the new staff is teaching me how to finish strong at the basket, which is something I needed to improve on. All the energy and effort we put in now will be worth it once the season starts. I can’t wait.”

For Hopkins, Betterment Is A Three Step Process

RYAN MADDEN CofCSports.com – October 15, 2014 In many ways, Mikaela Hopkins is the embodiment of the student-athlete experience. The 2013 all-conference selection is a standout not just on the basketball court, but also in both the classroom and the community where she consistently applies her intellect to philanthropy – whether it’s helping to feed the homeless or raising awareness for cancer.

This time of year, however, Hopkins – a 6-foot-5-inch center from Augusta, Ga. – would prefer to talk about basketball. Less than a month away from her senior season, Hopkins is chomping at the bit to show off some new skills that she’s been honing with first-year head coach Candice M. Jackson and her staff.

“This is the most detail-oriented coaching staff I’ve ever played for,” said Hopkins, who averaged 8.6 ppg and 6.0 rpg in 2013. “They’ve brought things to my attention – in terms of technique and mentality in the post – that I’ve never considered or thought much about. I’m really excited to be playing for them my senior year.”

With Coach Jackson at the helm, Hopkins’ growth has been a three-step process:

For starters, Coach Jackson has been working diligently since her arrival to improve Hopkins’ jump shot. Already potent around the rim – where she led the conference in field goal percentage last season – Coach Jackson immediately pinpointed Hopkins’ confidence in her jumper as an area for improvement. The two then set off immediately to make the necessary adjustments.

“The first thing we started working on with my jump shot was to build confidence and extend my range,” said Hopkins. “I’ve always known that I can shoot it, but Coach Jackson and the rest of the staff has been working with me to extend my comfort zone out to 15-17 feet from the basket. The biggest thing so far has just been the amount of reps. Coach (Darren) Guensch and Coach (Adria) Crawford have been out here working with me non-stop, whether it’s just stationary or on the move. We’ve been working really hard on it.”

Another area that Hopkins has sought to improve her game is footwork. Taller than most, the 6-foot-5-inch Hopkins has been working all offseason with The College’s Director of Sports Performance Marc Proto on improving her agility and athleticism. A steady diet of hurdles, sprints, and shuffle drills have all helped Hopkins’ improve her mobility, while Coach Guensch has been scheming ways to improve Hopkins’ moves on the low block.

“The workouts have been great,” said Hopkins. “With Coach Proto and Coach Guensch, I’ve been working all offseason and now pre-season on getting stronger and better balanced. It’s been a lot of core exercises that have allowed me to do a better job of staying low, working hard and being more powerful in the paint. A lot of these things I’m just now learning for the first time and I feel like my footwork and overall athleticism are better than ever before.”

Page 24: CCHARLESTON WOMEN’S HOOPSHARLESTON WOMEN’S HOOPS · last season, averaging 8.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 1.6 spg, all of which helped her to earn all-freshman team honors. Hall, a sharp-shoo

Lastly, the Cougar coaching staff has been working with Hopkins to develop a hook shot, somethingthat has not previosuly been a part of her offensive repertoire.

“For a long time, I never felt like I had to have a hook shot,” said Hopkins. “Mostly because of myheight, I’ve always been able to go over people. But I remember last season, playing against somegood teams, thinking my game would really be a lot better if I had a hook. So I was excited when thenew staff said they wanted to work with me on developing one.”

Much of the Hopkins’ motivation for wanting to add new pieces to her offensive arsenal has been TheCollege's move to the Colonial Athletic Association, where by-and-large, the Cougars are squaringoff against better, more athletic teams than they were in the Southern Conference.

“While not a lot of girls in the conference can match my height, they are really athletic, strong andphysical, and ultimately that has made me adjust my game and how I go about things,” said Hopkins“I feel like I’m well-prepared this season and hopefully these things that we’ve been working on –whether it’s the jumper the footwork or the hook – will pay dividends. I want this to be my best seasonyet.”
