  • Get into Glorious Gardens

A symposium at the grandest of all Clyde and Avon valley designed landscapes, Chatelherault, on Sunday 29th March, marked the launch of our Glorious Gardens volunteering project. 40 members of the public turned up to find out more about the training in researching, surveying, recording and inter-preting of sites that the project will involve. They enjoyed talks by Derek Alexander, archaeologist for National Trust for Scotland and both Heather James and Ingrid Shearer from Northlight Heritage, before break-out sessions to carry out some fieldwork and explore historic maps and plans. Its still not too late to sign up as a volunteer and the oppor-tunities are flexible. Visit www.gloriousgardens.org or call 0845 901 1142 to find out more.

    Reaping the rewards through commu-

    nity training

Partners Clydesdale Community Initiatives (CCI) had a lot to

celebrate after receiving a glowing evaluation of their

    2014 / 15 Employability and Training Programme.

The results demonstrated a huge increase in confidence,

positive mental health and employment prospects after tak-

ing part in the varied programme.

151 participants worked on a projects such as path mainte-

nance (have you tried out the one at Cleghorn Glen yet?),

tree planting and wall repairs across a range of sites in the

Clyde and Avon valleys including Morgan Glen, Carbarns

    Highwood and Nethan Gorge.

CCI have received funding from CAVLP and People and Com-

munities Fund to roll out a similar programme for 2015 / 16.

    Visit www.cciweb.org for more information.

Take a dander down Dalzell Estate

Essential woodland management at Dalzell Estate, Mother-

well, was recently completed, improving the woodlands and

ensuring of the continued development of another unique

designed landscape of remarkable quality and maturity.

Rhododendrons were thinned to allow the regeneration of

younger trees and improve views of the historic arboretum.

This also improved the habitat for the abundance of wildlife

including badgers, sparrowhawks, nuthatch, roe deer and

several species of bat, who call Dalzell Estate home!

Pathways were also repaired and improvedwhy not test

    them out for yourself?
