Cause and Effect on War in America
By: Nikki BrownJohn Heard
The Beginning
• When World War II ended Korea became a divided nation of the 38 parallel
• A line that crosses Korea at 28 degrees North latitude, Japanese surrender to Soviet troops.
• South of this Japanese surrender to American troops.
Development
• As in Germany the two nations developed.• The North was communist industrial
whose government was setup by the Soviets.
• The other was the South non-communist which was supported by western powers.
The Start
• 1949 the war had ended between the United States army and the Soviet Union.
• They had withdrawn most of there troops from Korea the Soviets gambled that the Us wouldn’t defend South Korea.
• So they supplied North Korea with tanks, airplanes, and moved in to attempt to take over the peninsula.
Clean sweep
• On June 25, 1950 North Koreans swept across the 38th parallel in a surprise attack against South Korea.
• Within days , North Korean troops had penetrated deep into the South.
President in the Mix
• President Truman was convinced that the North’s Korean aggressors were repeating what Hitler, Mussolini, and the Japanese had done in the 1930’s.
• South Korea asked the United Nation to intervene. But they refused to take part in the council, to protest admission rather than communist China, into UN.
Results
• As a result, the Soviet Union couldn’t veto the United Nations plan to send a international force to Korea to stop the invasion.
• A total of 15 nations participated under the command of General Douglas McArthur.
In the meantime
• Meanwhile the North Koreans continued to advance.
• By Sept.1950, they controlled the entire Korean peninsula except for tiny area around Pusan in the far south east.
• The same month McArthur launched a surprise attack.
The Meeting
• Troops moving from North Pusan met with forces that had made an amphibious landing at Incan.
• Caught in this “pincer-attack” about half of the North Koreans surrendered.
• The rest retreated!!!!!!!!!
Memorials
• A total f 36,576 Americans died while serving in the Korean War.
Vietnam War
• When pearl harbor was attack the surrounding cities and government became enraged
.• The War between North and South Korea
also caused the Vietnamese War.
Long Term effects
• The War was extremely costly with over 58,000 Americans died and over 150,000 wounded.
The Conclusion
• The fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975 marked the end of the very bloody war.
What I Learned
• I learned that the major effect of the Vietnam and Korean war was that “It made people look at America negatively because anyone didn’t win these wars.”
How WWII began
• World War II began on Sept. 1, 1939, when Germany, without a declaration of war, invaded Poland.
• Britain and France declared war on Germany on Sept. 3, and all the members of the Commonwealth of Nations, except Ireland, rapidly followed suit.
The four causes of WWII
• Treaty of Versailles solved nothing• League of nations failed to keep the
peace• Appeasement• Hitler
Treaty of Versailles solved nothing
• Reparations left many people in the victorious nations feeling guilty. The loss of all that land to other countries simply made Hitler's early aggression look justified.
• Self Determination surrounded Germany by a lot of small nation states that fell easy prey to Germany.
• But it mostly made the Germans angry
League of nations failed to keep the peace
• It was weak from the beginning, and had spectacular failures in Manchuria and Abyssinia, and in making Hitler keep the Treaty of Versailles.
• It failed to achieve disarmament. • Countries left the failing League, and
realized that they would have to fight a war.
Appeasement
• Appeasement encouraged war. It made Hitler think no one dare stop him, which encouraged him to go further and further until in the end he went too far.
• The Sudetenland led Stalin to make the Nazi-Soviet Pact, because he believed he could not trust Britain.
Hitler
• Many historians still think that the Second World War was Hitler's personal war, and that he always intended to fight a war - as a re-run of a First World War he did not believe that German had lost fairly.
