Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Being opened up to love, we as followers of Christ have to be opened up to love. Sometimes the gift of our faith, gives us a certain smugness and we get the wrong impression that we are the means and the vehicle of our holiness and calling to salvation. It is a gift from God. Freely given, not earned. We might feel that we are the chosen ones. Isn’t that what the Baltimore Catechism taught us? It was sort of good for its time but it did not challenge many to look deeper into their faith. It is not about form and practice. It is about love. In today’s Gospel, Jesus encounters a woman who not only is not a chosen one of Israel, she is a Canaanite. A woman and her daughter who is suffering from de-monic possession. A lot of unclean evidence sufficient to any respectable Jew to keep far away. But she acknowl-edges Jesus as to His true identity, “Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me. My daughter is terribly troubled by a demon.” The disciples try to dismiss her. Jesus, even tells her that He is here for the lost sheep of Israel. She does Him homage and reminds Him that the masters take care of their pets with the scraps from their meals as unworthy as they are. Jesus is astounded by her faith and persistence. The message for us is give God His due respect. Conduct yourself like you are in the presence of the Almighty. Maybe even examine how you come dressed to church and how you worship. And two, trust in God’s mercy. For our God does care for us, even if we are not aware of it. The love is always there. —Fr. Clarence Zamora
