There’s no style like the 80’sThe 80’s gave rise to some of the greatest artists that the world had ever seen, and is arguably one of the greatest decades for music the world has ever seen.....

In this decade the most memorable entertainer the world had ever seen achieved massive success with hits such as

ThrillerBillie JeanHuman NatureMan in the mirrorSmooth Criminal

The list can go on ....Lets take a tour of the genre’s, style and icons of the 80’s !

Popular Original PopstarsSome of the most influential icons of the 80’s and still to the present day were pop stars ! Artists such as Prince, Madonna and the late Michael Jackson had debatably reached the peak of their career’s around this time !

Madonna was regarded as the most ground breaking female artist of the 80’s, and was noted for her fashion sense!

Madonna was viewed as an icon when discussed in my focus group and I am sure she would be a welcome addition to my magazine.

Do you like it hard, heavy or glam ?!

Rock branched off into many different varieties in the 80’s meaning that sometimes it was hard to keep up!

The titled genres became some of the most dominant in the music industry in the 80’s. See Bon Jovi below. However could it just be a period thing ?

In my market research I found out that people mostly prefer to hear about the artists current actives and specifically about Bon Jovi !

However bands such as Led Zeppelin were no-where near as popular...

Electronic 80’sElectronic music began in the 80’s with many pioneering artists using this new found genre and technology to create never before heard sounds and beats !

In my magazine I will have to mention the genre ‘electronic ‘ because the 80’s is where it all began. It will broaden my audience to different sexualities, as in the early 80’s electronic was favoured by the homosexual communities. New order were one of the

many bands to embrace this genre with songs such as ‘Blue Monday’.

Duran Duran also ventured into this genre with many of their songs !

Hip Hop To The BeatWould an 80’s magazine be complete without a mention of hip-hop ?! Of course not ! With huge artist such Run DMC, The Beastie Boys and Public Enemy dishing out huge hits they gained recognition and exhibited a stronger influence on the music industry.

Many people in the focus group expressed an interest in Run DMC (see picture left) as well as other Hip Hop bands and would love to read about their current activities !

Who wants to read THIS ?!This magazine is aimed at young people, not in age but at heart ! They would have been young free and happy teen’s in the 80’s, this makes the target audience age any gender around the 40’s to 50’s.

They will be experienced in life and be holding down full time jobs, so they would not want to read a magazine that is written for teenagers, they would want to read well written, up-to-date articles with hints and subtle tones of 80’s.

Hopefully they will relate the 80’s to being happy and so this subtle underlining tone should make the readers reminisce about the ‘good old days’.

This magazine should relate to any class because they all had to live through the 80’s and so would have shared the same experience.

Targeting The PeopleColours – Neutral colour scheme with the dash of bold to captivate the reader.

Make articles and writing straight to the point with no ‘waffling’.

Make the cover sophisticated and elegant by using layers to draw the reader into focusing on the front page, and keep the same theme throughout.

The language style would well written but without technical words to make the magazine easy to read/enjoyable without making it childish.Subtle use of comedy in the form of jokes will also add to the enjoyment gained from reading the magazine.

Feature articles I would include are mainly interviews with 80’s stars from different genre’s about current affairs.

I would not use graphics because I do not think the target audience would appreciate them.

There will only be one image on the cover and it will always be of an artist looking at the camera as if to give eye contact to any potential readers making them pick up the magazine.

The images throughout the magazine will be varied showing different genre’s artists as well as other related items to the articles.

A few example’s of the layouts I wish to imitate are below;
