COMPARISON (TABLOID)

This newspaper have made this story look like a drama, or out of a film. They have used puns and jokes on this front cover, which tabloids are known for doing. For example ‘Reverse Gear’, ‘U-turn’, all things to do with cars.

They have used a dash board clock as a pun also to add to the drama of the story.

There isn’t much writing to do with the story on the front cover, something else tabloids are known for. This is too attracted the audience and makes them want to read on.

A tabloid newspaper is a giant advertisement. With bold eye catching titles and puns.

The photograph they have used isn’t very flattering, they have tried to make him look like an idiot scratching his head.

The Prime Minister is an authority figure, having a photograph of him attracts a wider audience and creates more of a drama.

A tabloid like The Daily Mirror is much cheaper compared to a broadsheet like The Guardian.

A tabloid main article has more pictures compared to writing this is for the audience it wishes to target (The lower social grouping).

Tirade: A long, angry speech of criticism or accusation.

The title for this story is ‘What A Silly Boy’ is something parents say to naughty children, it is patronising towards Jeremy Clarkson.

They have also showed ‘His Rants’ which is to highlight him being the bad guy in this story.

The Mirror have carried the puns and jokes on throughout the paper.

There is another photograph of the PM, here the newspaper are saying that Jeremy Clarkson is a ‘friend’. This adding to the drama of the story.

COMPARISON (BROADSHEET)

Jeremy Clarkson is stood in a neutral position compared to The Mirror.

This story isn’t as eye catching compared to The Mirror version, the text is smaller and the colour scheme is just plain blue. This shows it is for a more intelligent audience and of a higher social grouping.

There are no puns or jokes on The Guardian.

The Guardian have more serious headlines compared to The Mirror.

There isn’t much writing for this particular story on the front cover, all there is a number 3 and some arrows saying to continue. This showing that it is for a higher/older audience that they don’t need an eye-catching statement to read on.

The Guardian is more expensive in comparison to The Mirror.

Page 7: Catherine Thompson-Broadsheet Vs Tabloid

The Guardian have used a photograph of not just Jeremy Clarkson, this photograph is more flattering than the tabloid. The broadsheet are not out to create drama or embarrass Jeremy Clarkson.

The Guardian have used only one main photograph and two thick columns of writing. This showing it is for a higher social grouping and for a older target audience.

This version isn’t as eye catching compared to The Mirror, it doesn’t have much colour or a big masthead. The font used is basic and plain, and the photograph used is neutral.

‘Row Gets Political’ there is a focus more on the politics aspect compared to drama and gossip in a tabloid.

The Guardian story is longer and in more detail this showing the audience for this newspaper would make an effort to read it, compared to the tabloid Mirror where they might just view the photographs.

ADVERTISEMENT-IN A TABLOID

This advert is on the left side of the article, a tabloid is aimed at a different audience to a broadsheet and this shows this. It is for food(pizza and ice-cream) a BOGOF offer, which would only apply to either a younger audience or working class. Because anyone from a higher class would benefit from this.

The text is big and bold making the advert look cheaper and more eye-catching, this helping the target audience want to read it.

ADVERTISEMENT-IN A BROADSHEET

This is right of the article and is aimed at a higher class of an audience because of what it is advertising. It is for a expensive printer which is not something everybody can afford.

The advert have also used a recent, well known but expensive to creative film. This further more adding to the signs for money.

The text is small and discreet which shows that it doesn't need to jump off the page with big bold writing the target audience will read this advert either way.
