There were 37 Porsches on board including four of out of production 911 GT2 RS models, which are difficult to get hold of and have a value of approximately USD292,200 each. Following the sinking Porsche have advised customers waiting for their vehicles that they have decided to resume production of the model to replace those lost. Audi have also confirmed they had vehicles on board. The vessel loaded cargo in Antwerp and Hamburg with destinations of Casablanca, Dakar, Conakry and the Brazilian ports of Suape, Vitoria, Rio de Janeiro, Santos and Paranagua. As well as 2,000 vehicles, the Grande America was also carrying 365 containers, with a reported 45 units containing hazardous cargo including shipments of hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid. 247 containers were stowed on the weather deck with the remainder on the lower deck. 34 of the 45 units containing hazardous cargo were stowed on the weather deck which is where the fire is thought to have started. No doubt the crew, who initially tried to fight the fire, will be interviewed by authorities with a view to investigating the origin of the fire. Roose+Partners have been appointed by part cargo interests in respect of their cargo losses. The ro-ro had 2,200 m/t of fuel oil on board. Oil from the vessel continues to leak into the sea. A slick of 10km long and 1km wide was initially noted with a number of other larger slicks since confirmed. Samples of the oil have confirmed that the oil originated from the Grande America. There were reports of oil on beaches in the Gironde, France but analysis by the Centre of Documentation, Research and Experimentation on Accidental Water Pollution (Cedre) has shown that the oil did not come from the vessel. The Grimaldi Group is working closely with the French Authorities to monitor, control and clean-up the pollution. Personnel and craft have been deployed and an underwater survey of the wreck, which is lying at 4,600 metres, by submarine has been planned. Poor weather has impacted on the pollution control efforts but the weather on site is forecast to improve over the coming days. Surveillance flights continue and a drift committee has been set up to assess the risks of long-term coastal pollution. The prevailing environmental conditions in the Bay of Biscay suggest the French coast would not be affected during the coming week.
