Casualty Newsletter 29th July 2015 FEATURE CASUALTY NEW CASUALTIES 122 Jiang Xia Xiang/ Bai Chi Jiang Xia Xiang – Bulk carrier, MMSI 412550730, Build date unknown, 4,615 gt Bai Chi – Tanker, IMO 9342073, Built 2007, 41,983 dwt Date of Casualty 23 July 2015 Voyage An Qing to Ningbo, China / Zhoushan to Ningbo, China Cargo 7,498 m/t of stone / 30,000 m/t of crude oil Type of Casualty Collision Type of Claim Collision damage claim P&I n/a / London Club At around 1am local time on 23 July 2015 the tanker Bai Chi and the bulk carrier Jiang Xia Xiang were in collision on the Yangtze River in the Wusong area near Shanghai, China. As a result of the collision the Jiang Xia Xiang, which was carrying 7,498 m/t of stone and was bound for Ningbo, suffered extensive damage to her portside and she began to take on water. She was reportedly taken to an anchorage at Wusongku, Shanghai whilst the crew tried to control the water ingress. Despite their efforts about an hour after arriving at the anchorage the vessel began to list heavily and she subsequently capsized. The Shanghai Maritime Search and Rescue Centre deployed eight of their rescue ships and they were able to rescue the 16 strong crew. Following the capsize, a small fuel leak was noted with a light sheen of oil around the vessel. Oil containment booms have been placed around the wreck. The Jiang Xia Xiang is owned and operated by Huayuan Shipping. The Bai Chi, which was carrying a cargo of crude oil and is operated by China Shipping Development Tanker, suffered only minor damage to her bow. There was no water ingress or damage to her cargo holds. She subsequently departed Shanghai on 25 July Investigations are underway as to the cause of the collision but authorities have suggested that the collision happened due to a violation of the collision regulations in crossing routes. Guangzhou Salvage have been contracted to salve the vessel and their salvage craft and personnel arrived on site on 26 July 2015. The vessel had been caught in storms off Hong Kong and her crew had been evacuated by helicopter. Three other vessels, Zhong Chuan 19, Jin Tai Yi 3 and the Jia Hang 233, were also caught in the same storms and were also evacuated. The fate of the other three vessels remains unreported. Type of Claim Possible salvage claim and/or General Average declaration P&I North of England Shun Hong Hai 286 S General cargo vessel, No other details IN OTHER NEWS Last Saturday, amidst tight security, the first ships passed through the new Suez canal in a trial run before the waterway is officially opened on 6 August 2015. Construction on the new 72km waterway, which runs alongside the original 146-year-old canal, began less than 12 months ago and is reported to have cost USD8 billion. Six containerships were involved with three navigating the canal from Suez in the south through to the Mediterranean Sea, with the other three proceeding in the opposite direction. It is claimed that the new canal will save 11 hours of navigation time from the existing 22 hours.

Goodfaith S – editions 98, 99, 100, 102, 105, 108 & 110 – the bulk carrier which ran aground in February 2015 on andros island has been refloated and has been towed from andros to the premises of the spanopoulos Group salamis in salamisby. the accommodation block and parts of the stern were removed to facilitate the refloating/wreck removal operation. she is expected to be towed to turkey in the near future for demolition.

Maersk Karachi – editions 112, 113, 115, 116, 117, & 118 – the disposal of the toxic waste from the containership is taking considerably longer than expected. it is understood there are still 200 containers on board. the police retain possession of the 160-ton crane boom which collapsed onto the containership beginning the chain of events which led to the fire and contamination. the crane, which was built 13 years ago in China, was reported to have been last serviced in september 2014. the other seven container cranes are now back in operation.

Amber 1 – edition 121 - tsavliris salvage

were appointed to provide commercial towage assistance following the breakdown of the amber 1 which was carrying agricultural products to tianjin, China. the tug tsavliris unity towed the vessel to Galle, sri lanka.

Alam Manis – edition 121 - semco (rather than POsH) are confirmed as the lOF contractors with t&t salvage as subcontractors. the scopic clause which was incorporated into the lOF contract has been invoked. the vessel remains aground off san Fernando.

Lagarfoss – edition 121 – the icelandic Coast Guard ship Thor was contracted to tow the lagerfoss to reykjavik. the vessel’s owners have advised that the vessel suffered a malfunction in her steering gear. the vessel had recently undergone a replacement of certain steering gear parts whilst in dry-dock in Hamburg at the request of the manufacturer of the gear.
