Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris Project: Data Recovery Objective

To provide a simple method of recovering data from software damaged hard-disk (unbootable hard disk) using Linux bootable CD

Highlights Allows backup and recovery of data through a variety of

configurations through Linux Live CD Simple and cost effective method for data recovery from

failed hard disks Shared knowledge through training of other technicians,

students and enthusiasts

Kedah State Secretariat Office Project: E-Sinar – Impoverished Citizens Database

(MySQL) Objective

To build a centralised database of impoverished state citizens with minimum costs and maintenance

Highlights Use of MySQL database which supports large data

capacities equivalent to popular proprietary alternatives No limit on number of connections or user registrations,

enabling more users to benefit from the system while reducing cost

Increased internal skills and expertise

Project: Final Year Projects Using OSS Objective

To encourage students to use OSS instead of proprietary software in their projects.

Highlights Several successful projects using OSS such as

Water Turbidity Measuring System Prawn Aquaculture Heating System Human Tracking System Using RFID

More usage of OSS for embedded computing to try out new future technologies

System Objective

Easier management of web content at all levels within the agency

Highlights Development of several websites with single sign on

using OSS stack Fully developed in-house, thereby increasing technical

know-how of staff Resources on Internet were readily available to be used

and shared to support agency needs

Kedah State Secretariat Office Project: Department use of Office Productivity

Software (OpenOffice.org) Objective

OpenOffice.org as the office productivity suite for all PCs Highlights

Started in 2003, over 2200 PCs deployed to date with OpenOffice.org and 1913 staff trained

Savings allowed agencies to increase procurement of PCs and ICT hardware

Limited spread of viruses that were prevalent with MS Word documents
