In North America gas heating furnaces are the most common typeof residential and light commercial heating system. In this course,you'll learn how to install, troubleshoot, service, and maintain gasfurnaces professionally, accurately, and quickly. The equipmentcovered in this class ranges from standard efficiency furnaces withstanding pilots and thermocouples to the latest multi-poisecondensing furnaces with modulating gas valves, variable speedmotors, microprocessor controls, electronic thermostats, and directignition burners with flame rectification proving circuits. Classroomsessions cover: gas heating fundamentals, types of gas heatingsystems, furnace construction, operating components and safetycontrols, furnace combustion and venting air requirements,installation rules and gas pipe sizing, determining proper size forvent pipe and venting concerns, accessories (such as humidifiersand electronic air cleaners), reading electrical schematics andinterpretation of various heating electrical circuits. Classroominstruction is reinforced with a number of lab troubleshootingexercises on operating rooftops and residential furnaces.

Students will:

• Measure gas pressure and set up a furnace for proper firing rate• Measure and adjust blower airflow

• Measure inducer air pressure and evaluate operation• Read and interpret various furnace-wiring diagrams

A cumulative score of 70% is required to pass this course. Thescore is a combination of attendance, class participation, and ademonstration of skills and knowledge through quizzes and/or worksessions.

Wintertime can be super-hectic for HVAC technicians; especially thoseoperating their businesses in areas where cold, snowy weather is thenorm. That’s why it’s a good idea to make sure your truck is well-stocked before you head out on any service call – that way, you’ll havewhat you need to get the job done much more quickly, and you’ll keepyour customers satisfied.

Here are a few items that you’ll want to have on your truck, so you’ll beprepared in any winter emergency:

Tools of the Trade – Make sure you have all the tools you need forwinter emergencies. And, check to see that any digital equipment youhave is in good working order. You’ll want to have all the hand andpower tools on board that you need, so you won’t have to leave thejobsite once you begin work.

Gauges and Monitors – Winter jobs require different gauges than youneed during the summer. Have draft gauges, smoke testers, analyzers,identifiers and monitors on board.
