Today we focus on the profound and awesome mystery of the nature of our triune God; God in three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We accept that this theological mystery can never be solved in the traditional sense; our human understanding can never fully grasp a clear concrete answer. But over our lives of faith, the contemplation of the mystery can lead us to a greater understanding of and relationship with our loving God. In the beautiful imagery of the first reading God delights in the companionship of God’s creation, wisdom, who plays before God “on the surface of his earth,” How wonderful it would be to have such a relationship with God; to know that we were his “delight day by day!” From the mystery of the trinity we know that the very nature of God is relationship. In the relationship of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we see a perfect connection, a pure outpouring and sharing of self. Being made in the image of God, is it any wonder that relationships are such an important, perhaps the most important, aspect of our own lives? From before birth we are in relationship, with both the God who created us, and the mother whose womb we are sheltered in. Throughout our lives, relationships will be the source of our greatest joys, and likely, our greatest sorrows. The psalmist, awed by the majesty of God’ creation, asks, “ What is man that you should be mindful of him?” We are the beloved creations of God, guided by the Spirit of truth and the example of Jesus Christ to ever greater closeness with him, until one day we too will be playing before him, secure in the knowledge that we are his delight.

First Reading — The wisdom of God played on the surface of God’s earth, finding delight in the human race (Proverbs 8:22-31).

Psalm — O Lord, our God, how wonderful you name in all the earth! (Psalm 8).

Second Reading — The love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:1-15).

Gospel — The Spirit of truth will guide you to all truth (John 16:12-15).

LITURGY VAULT “The liturgy is celebrated for God and not for ourselves;

it is His work; He is the subject; and we must open ourselves to Him”

(Pope Benedict XVI, 3 October 2012).

THE ORDER OF MASS: THE LITURGY OF THE WORD – PART 3 The Ambo

According to the General Introduction to the Lectionary, “the readings are always to be proclaimed at the ambo” (n. 16) in Masses celebrated with a congregation. An ambo is a “fixed elevated platform, usually between the sanctuary and the nave, used for reading and chanting the Scriptures, the Exsultet, the Homily, and the General Intercessions” (Rev. Jovian P. Lang, OFM, Dictionary of the Liturgy (1989), p. 311).

According to The Catholic Encyclopedia, the word ambo is of Greek origin and, according to Pope Innocent III († 1216), signifies a mountain or elevation. In his work on the Mass, Pope Innocent III speaks of “the deacon ascending the ambo to read the Gospel” before quoting the prophet Isaiah: “Get you up to a high mountain, O Sion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength” (Isaiah 40:9). This also alludes to Christ preaching from a mountain: “He went up on the mountain… and He opened his mouth and taught them” (Matthew 5:1, 2). The

fifth century Christian historian Socrates of Constantinople, also known as Socrates Scholasticus, said that Saint John Chrysostom († 407) was accustomed to mount the ambo to address the people, in order to be more distinctly heard (cf. Historia Ecclesiastica, VI, 5; cf. The Catholic Encyclopedia (1907), vol. 1).

In the early Church, the ambo was “placed in the nave, and provided with two flights of steps; one from the east, the side towards the altar; and the other from the west. From the eastern steps the subdeacon, with his face to the altar, read the Epistles; and from the western steps the deacon, facing the people, read the Gospels” (The Catholic Encyclopedia (1907), vol. 1).

Today, the placement of the ambo “indicates the relationship of the Word to the Sacrament and should allow the faithful to see and hear the minister easily. To be worthy of its function as a suitable place to announce the message of the Lord, the lectern ought to be carefully proportioned, constructed of fine materials, and beautifully designed. Its proper placement should ensure visibility and audibility not only of the Word but also of the Homily. […] Simple moveable lecterns, which may be only a ledge supported on a post or column of wood or metal, and hence do not compete with the Gospel lectern, may be used by commentators, readers of announcements, chanters, or the choirmaster” (Rev. Jovian P. Lang, OFM, Dictionary of the Liturgy (1989), p. 311).

“From the ambo only the readings, the responsorial Psalm, and the Easter Proclamation (Exsultet) are to be proclaimed; it may be used also for giving the homily and for announcing the intentions of the Prayer of the Faithful. The dignity of the ambo requires that only a minister of the word should go up to it” (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, n. 309).

Our pews are crafted from pine. The original contract for their construction was placed with Murphy Milling, Santa Clara, CA in 1939, by Harry Downie. Now, eighty years on, we are having these very same pews completely sanded down to the pine wood, repaired and restored. They will enhance our Basilica for many years to come.

In donating to our Renew a Pew Campaign, you are playing your part in helping to ensure that all who come to our Basilica in future years to worship our loving God, will have comfortable seating and kneeling available to them.

Once again, I extend my great gratitude to all who have contributed so generously towards helping us meet our final goal of $150,000.

Sleeping Saint Joseph is back and in stock in the Museum Store.

St. Joseph has always been known as a hard worker. He has always been known for his beautiful carpentry but that was not the only gift he was blessed with.

Since before the birth of Jesus, God has sent angels down to St. Joseph to relay messages to him in his sleep. God depends on St. Joseph to help relay messages and answer prayers. As a carpenter, St. Joseph learned the importance of concentration and perfection.

That is the reason we must have patience when waiting for our prayers to be answered. St. Joseph takes each prayer he receives seriously and works hard to answer them the best way possible.

“I have great love for Saint Joseph, because he is a man of silence and strength. On my table I have an image of Saint Joseph sleeping. Even when he is asleep, he is taking care of the Church!”

Pope Francis advised people to leave a “note” under the image of the saint for help whenever they have a problem.

Please join us for a special Mass at 11 AM followed by a procession to our large courtyard and a prayer service honoring St. Junipero Serra around our beautiful fountain.

Stay and enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by the Knights of Columbus along with live music, including our own Carmel Mission choir.

DOCENT CORNER AND STEWARDSHIP

St. Anthony of Padua If you look at the Reredos in the front of the altar, you will see a statute of St. Anthony of Padua. It is on the right side in the middle tier at about the 2 o’clock position. Most of us know him as a venerated Italian Saint. Well… not so fast! His real name was Fernando Martins de Bulhões was he was born in Lisbon, Portugal to a wealthy noble family.

Against his family’s wishes, he joined the Augustinians and lived in a monastery for 8 years studying Scripture and Latin. He met 5 Franciscan missionaries who were later killed working in the missions in Morocco. He wanted to be a missionary and obtained permission to join the Franciscan order. He changed his name to Anthony but on his arrival in Morocco, he fell ill and went to Italy where he sought admission into a monastery.

Needing a homilist on a special occasion, Anthony was asked to preach. He was reluctant but his superior instructed him to

speak whatever the Holy Spirit should put into his mouth. His sermon created a deep impression on all present and started him on a new public career. His sermons in Padua were famous and had up to 30,000 people in attendance.

St. Francis of Assisi was impressed by the young friar and asked that he teach theology to the Franciscans but his lasting fame came from his oratory. After only 10 years as a Franciscan, Anthony became ill and died at the age of 35. Typically depicted in art with lilies, a book and the Infant Child Jesus (who had appeared to St. Anthony), he is commonly referred to today as the "finder of lost articles."

In the 17th century, Spanish missionaries established a mission in his honor along a river also named after him that became the city of San Antonio, Texas. He is also venerated as St. Anthony of Lisbon. He was named a Doctor of the Church in 1946. The 3rd mission founded by Fr. Serra was Mission San Antonio de Padua in 1771.

His feast day is 13 June.

CARMEL MISSION BASILICA (1771) June 16, 2019 Page 12

Dear Friends of Carmel Mission,

As we welcome all our visitors to the U.S. Open,

and express the wish that all have enjoyed some wonderful golf, as well as our unique Carmel hospitality, I’m happy to announce our very own Carmel Mission Open!

We are now coming towards the end of our 2019 Annual Ministries Appeal. Thanks to your generosity, we have given $50,000.00 to assist our Diocesan ministries. We have also raised the significant sum of $80,000.00 for our Renew A Pew Campaign. Our goal is to raise another $20,000.00 before our campaign closes.

Our Carmel Mission Open is an open invitation to all who join us in our beautiful Basilica to help us meet our goal. We are now in a good spot on the fairway, with the 18th hole in sight!

We have been given a matching donation of $10,000.00 by a very generous donor. That means that we need your assistance, if you’re able and willing to help us, to raise a matching sum of $10,000.00.

I know that with your support we can achieve our goal. Our beautifully renewed pews have been greatly admired by parishioners and visitors alike. They will add to the beauty of our Basilica for many years to come.

We have substantially increased the number of participants in our AMA 2019 Campaign and now have more participants than any other parish in our diocese. If you have not yet participated, please accept our Open invitation. If you have already participated, we thank you for your great generosity.

When we work together as an active parish community, we can achieve great things together for the greater glory of our Triune God.

Just take a look at Crespi Parish Hall and the way it has been restored! Once again, thanks to your generosity in our previous AMA Campaigns.

We make no apologies to anyone for being a Catholic community that welcomes all who come to us. We are proud to be carrying on the work of our Founder and First Pastor, St. Junipero Serra, who first preached about the mystery of the Trinity and the Gospel of Jesus Christ, in this sacred space.

We will together move Always Forward, Never Back!

Blessings,

Fr. Paul
