You will have received the letter detailing your child’s achievement levels earlier this week. My first look at the overall school results show outstanding achievements in Year 3 in both Literacy and Numeracy, well above the state average in fact. The Year 5 Numeracy achievement level also remains well above state average; however the overall Year 5 Reading result stayed below state average and this has already been an area of immediate review by Stage 2 and 3 teachers. During the Stage 2 & 3 planning meetings this week the teachers of Years 3-6 have looked closely at the overall and individual results, including particular items that students had difficulty with and they have planned immediate follow up to improve them. The nature of the extra support that is available to support these students will be detailed for you along with a request for how you can assist this at home in Term 4 and into 2013. It is important that you go through the NAPLAN information carefully, praising your child for things done well and reviewing areas that are of concern to you. I also invite you to attend one the Parent Forums on Tuesday 23 October at 9.15am or 7.30pm in the school staffroom to look at the detailed results for the school and discuss any issues arising from them. You may also want to discuss your child’s results with the class teacher or members of the school executive and I encourage you to call the school office on 95873717 to arrange a suitable time. At the end of Term Three I wish all students, staff and families a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday break. In preparing to write the last newsletter for this term I reread all the previous ones for the Term and I am astounded by the list of high level individual and group achievements and awards, the many extra school and community events that we have participated in, as well as the level of enthusiasm, quality teaching and support provided as the normal, daily lessons in all classes have occurred. Congratulations to all for your outstanding learning in Term 3! Enjoy the holidays. The first day for all students in Term 4 is Monday 8 October We had a short but very special assembly yesterday to farewell one of our long serving staff members. Mrs Elaine Dettrick has retired after a long and varied teaching career, most of which was spent at Carlton Public School. She penned the poem below to mark the occasion. We thank her for the service she has provided to so many students at Carlton in the various roles and programs she has been involved with and wish her a long, enjoyable and successful retirement.

Congratulations
To our many high achieving students who did so well in NAPLAN, including many Year 5 students who
have improved significantly since they last did the NAPLAN tests in Year 3.
To our team in the Number Crunchers competition that was held at Blakehurst HS this week. The
team members were: Damian C,
Leo L, Kane Q, James L and Alex
G. All the boys had to answer
challenging mental maths
questions, continuing in the
competition until an incorrect
answer was given. Our school
winner was Kane who will now
continue into the next round.
Reminders:
The last assembly this term will be a Kindergarten – Year 6 Assembly that will be held on Friday, 21
September at 11.30 am. You are invited to attend to see the presentation of the last silver and gold
awards for this term. It may be a little crowded but a nice way to finish Term 3.
The next P & C Meeting will be held on Tuesday 9 October (2nd day back in Term 4) at 7.30pm in the
staffroom.
A special Parent Forum will be held on Tuesday 23 October to review and discuss the school’s
performance in the Year 3 and 5 NAPLAN tests. Two sessions will be held to meet parent’s varying
needs. The first will be at 9.15 am in the staffroom. The second will be at 7.00pm on the same day. It will
be a good opportunity for parents to find out more about this national testing process and for you to ask
questions about how best to support your child, whether they achieved well or not, or as preparation for
those children who will be involved in 2013.

P&C Meeting
The next P&C meeting will be held in Term 4 on Tuesday, 9 October in the staffroom at 7.30pm in the first
week back at school. Please mark this date in your diary. Hope to see you there!
School Banking
3/4E wins again!
Congratulations to 3/4E who were the winners of the Dollarmites Achievement Certificate this week with 10
bankers. This is 3/4E’s sixth award this term. What excellent savers! This award is given each week to the
class who has the most children banking each Tuesday.
Rewards
Book-lights are currently out of stock and should arrive next term. Meanwhile students have received a Frisbee
while we are waiting for the delivery. While we have a small supply of handballs, watches and wallets, once we
run out these items will no longer be available for redemption. So it will be a case of first in, first served when
redeeming those items. In Term 4 the USB will be available for redemption.
Also it is important to remember the gold token that is attached to certificates accompanying your reward is a
souvenir only and can’t be used to redeem further rewards. Happy banking

Expression of Interest for School Band Years 3-6 Dear Parents and Caregivers For a number of years there has been interest in our school community for the establishment of a school band. Forming and supporting a school band is a major project and given the financial investment for both the school and families, it is not one to be taken lightly.
In the recent planning survey completed by students, parents and teachers as part of developing the 2012-2014 School Plan, a school band was listed as one of the new initiatives the school should undertake. At the P&C meeting there was also a great deal of discussion and support for a band.
For many students experience in a primary school band is a great stepping stone for music study at School Certificate and Higher School Certificate levels. There are also many opportunities to join community bands and Performing Arts Unit ensembles that provide a high standard of music and fantastic opportunities for performance across NSW, Australia and in some cases the world.
Involvement in a school band would involve a high level of commitment in terms of practice and there would be band fees for instrument hire and tutoring fees for the hire of tutors. At this stage in the planning process it is hard to determine the level of these fees, however approximately $150.00 per term could be expected. Students joining the school band would be expected to attend before or after school practice sessions.
To assist with any further planning we need an indication of the level of support from the school community. It would be appreciated if you could complete this survey below and return it to school by Friday 19 October, 2012.
Jenny Morrison Leigh Rasmussen Assistant Principal Deputy Principal Band Co-ordinator CAPA Co-ordinator
would be interested in joining a Year’s 3-6 school band if one was formed in 2013. I understand that there would be costs associated with band membership and that a high level of commitment will be needed.
