From the EditorHow much do we take for granted about the

world we live in? When we’re very young, I’d say

– all of it, unquestioningly. I spent my very early

years in post-war South London, a grey-tinged

make-the-best-of-it kind of place, where rationing

was only just coming to an end, and everyone was

unflaggingly cheerful.

As a small child I had no idea why vast areas of our streets were

full of broken bricks, bright with yellow weeds, half destroyed

walls and shattered glass. It was perfectly normal to see the side of

a house with a fireplace halfway up the wall and rose-patterned

wallpaper flapping idly in the breeze. No-one told me – or I have

no recollection of them doing so – that these had been people’s

houses, where families had lived, loved and, quite probably died.

As a five year old in Camberwell, I was delighted by the Bomb

Sites, without any concept of what a bomb actually was. They

were fabulous worlds to explore, with treasures to unearth and

wonderful games to play. And, of course, because we were

told by teachers and parents not to go there, the prospect of

sneaking across the street from the school gate at playtime was an

irresistible temptation.

The rows of prefabs with corrugated walls, the low walls where

railings had been sawn off to use the metal for munitions – it’s all

still there in my mind’s eye. And now, with the

benefit of great age, I can see what a tribute it

all was to those stout British hearts, re-building

their lives and looking to the future.

Piles of paperwork? Don’t panic!Do you need help managing your investments and paperwork? asks Karen Thomas at Carpenter Box

At the beginning of the new financial year in April we tend to get more paperwork than usual through the door. If you have investments, you may find that with mountains of paperwork giving valuations and forecasts, it’s difficult to work out which pieces of paper need to be dealt with and which can be filed away. A number of yearly household

bills are reviewed at this time, too – and you may worry about paying too much. The best advice is don’t panic, help is at hand!

At Carpenter Box Accountants we may be able to help, by giving tax advice to individuals in the local area. We deal with many retired people on a personal level, and in response to many requests from clients

who are finding it difficult to manage their paperwork, we’ve decided to launch our Silver Service. This provides support and – if needed – regular home visits to help with filing, form filling, investments and any tax matters arising. Silver Service can be tailored to meet individual needs, and is provided for a fixed monthly fee.

In addition, our team can help you compare household energy, insurance and telecommunication company prices to make sure you are getting the best deal for your money. We’re also able to give advice regarding capital gains tax on selling assets, and inheritance tax on gifts or on your estate – and explain ways in which you can make tax savings.

The importance of having a Lasting Power of Attorney

We all realise there may come a time when we may be unable, or too frail, to look after our own affairs – perhaps because of an accident, illness or just as we get older. Whatever the cause, someone still has to pay your bills, manage your finances and speak on your behalf on medical issues.

If you plan in advance and create a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), you will be able to choose who you want to manage things for you. A friend or relative – someone you trust.

If you don’t organise this now it may mean that it cannot be done later, as to make an LPA you must be assessed as mentally capable of doing so.

It’s vital to make a valid WillWithout a Last Will and Testament your assets will be distributed according to the rules of Intestacy, which lay down a rigid method of estate distribution and make no account for your wishes. For married couples – it is not certain that your spouse will inherit all your assets. And for unmarried couples – your partner may not receive anything! Your entire estate will probably be divided

If you’d like to find out more about this service Karen will be happy to talk to you. Call her on 01903 234094, Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm.

What would happen if you could no longer look after things for yourself? Glenys Laws at Collective Legal Solutions explains how to plan in advance

between your children, or if you don’t have children, between your relatives. If you’re divorced or separated you must make it clear whether or not you want your ex-spouse to benefit from your estate.

And here’s some advice to parents of young children. By making a Will you can ensure that the Courts are aware of who you wish to care for your children in the event of your death. You can also decide at what age you wish your children to receive their inheritance.

For a free informal consultation at home, or for more information, call Glenys Laws on 01903 200982 or visit the website at www.glenyslawscls.co.uk.

So, who DO you think you are? asks Claire Love at LWS Creative

In the last issue, I talked about

using the Internet to keep in

touch with friends and family.

This column is also about

family, but family you might

not be aware of… yet. There

are no prizes for guessing the

most common subject on the

web – to spare our blushes,

enough said! But you may be

surprised that right up there

among the top uses of the web

is genealogy.

Over the last few years, family

history has grown as a hobby,

mainly because of the Internet,

and there are two main reasons

for this.

The Internet is the perfect

repository and indexing system

for hundreds of years’ worth

of records – from censuses to

phone books, and from baptism

records to criminal proceedings.

This information, available at

your finger tips from sites such

as Ancestry, Find My Past and

Genes Reunited, means that

you can easily trace your history

back to the early 19th century

and often beyond.

But, these sites, and many

others like them, also provide

the second key to the growth

of genealogy – contacts. By

sharing your research online,

you will find other researchers

seeking the same long-lost

family members. It’s the perfect

way to discover new branches

of your family, and answer that

all-important question about

knowing who you are.

Thanks, guys! – from QAHHThe Queen Alexandra Hospital

Home in Boundary Road,

Worthing needs to raise

over £1.3 million each year

to maintain its services for

ex-servicemen and women.

That’s why the Home and

its residents are delighted

by the efforts of Worthing

Radio Emergency Activated

Communications (REAC) who

have recently donated £1,000.

The group consists entirely

of volunteers of all ages

and backgrounds, who raise

money for charity by providing

safety, security and event

management services for

a small fee – donating the

proceeds to various deserving

local causes.

The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home provides nursing care and rehabilitation to former members of HM Armed Forces with physical and/or neurological disabilities. It is committed to provide those who have served their country with the quality of care, comfort, and independence they so richly deserve.

History in the SkiesTangmere Military Aviation Museum is a fascinating tribute to our

war heroes. Gill Medway reports

Tales of heroism and derring-

do are always wonderful to

discover – but when they have

a local flavour these wartime

stories take on a whole new

meaning. And that’s the true

excitement of Tangmere

Military Aviation Museum just

three miles east of Chichester. It

stands next to the original RAF

Tangmere airfield off the A27, a

frontline station in RAF Fighter

Command’s conflict with the

Luftwaffe during the desperate

days of the Battle of Britain.

The museum is home to an

extensive collection of military

aviation and World War II

artefacts, static aircraft, displays

depicting family life in wartime

Britain, the role of women in

the RAF and the activities of

the S.O.E (Special Operations

Executive) who dropped agents

into occupied Europe.

One of the flying legends

associated with Tangmere is

Billy Fiske, an American who

fought with the RAF when

America was still neutral.

In order to enlist, he told

the RAF he was a Canadian,

and flew as a member of

601 Squadron, nicknamed

Millionaires Squadron, as many

of its members were extremely

wealthy. On August 16 1940,

Billy crash landed on Tangmere

airfield, and his injuries were

so severe that he died the

following day in the Royal West

Sussex Hospital, Chichester. He

is buried at Boxgrove Priory

with full military honours.

The famous pilot Douglas

Bader, played so memorably

by Kenneth More in the 1956

movie Reach for the Sky, flew

Spitfires from nearby West

Hampnett, a satellite airfield of

Tangmere. He was shot down

on August 9 1941 and became a

German POW.

One of the most poignant

exhibits we saw on a recent visit

to Tangmere is the excavated

remains of a Hurricane, flown

by Sgt Dennis Noble during

Battle of Britain which crashed

in Hove while the battle

was raging. Sgt Noble’s own

personal effects, salvaged from

the wreckage, tell their own

story – that of a young man cut

down in the prime of life while

fighting in the skies for the

freedom of his country.

There are famous aircraft

everywhere you look. You’ll see

the Gloster Meteor F4 Special

in which Group Captain ‘Teddy’

Donaldson broke the World Air

Speed Record in 1946. And the

impressive Hawker Hunter F5

broke the same record again in

1953, flown by Squadron Leader

Neville Duke, on a measured

course between Bognor and

Littlehampton. There are lots

more aircraft outside, including

the famous Phantom.

Tangmere closed as an

operational airfield in 1970 –

and it wasn’t until 1982 that

the Museum opened on the

site. Run entirely by volunteers

and enthusiasts, it’s a mine of

information about those far-

off wartime days, and since

the Eighties it’s expanded out

of all recognition. One of its

latest additions is the Lightning

Cockpit Simulator – a chance to

experience the thrills of piloting

a Lightning flight, without

leaving the ground.

There are plenty of special

events planned at Tangmere

this year, including a Family

Day on May 15, with a special

children’s art competition, and

a Douglas Bader Remembered

Exhibition on August 7.

A visit to Tangmere is an

uplifting and totally fascinating

experience, offering a real

insight into bygone days.

What’s more, it’s brimful of

helpful volunteers who will take

great pleasure in answering

your questions. Wander

around the museum shop and

the Memorial Garden – and

when you’re feeling in need

of a cuppa, pop along to the

NAAFI Café for some welcome

refreshment.

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is open every day from February to the end of November from 10am. There’s good disabled access, too. Visit the website for admission and event details at www.tangmere-museum.org.uk, or call 01243 790090.

Quirky tales of Allotment Life

by Kay Sexton

Published in hardback by

Summersdale Books, price £9.99

ISBN: 978 1 84024 1351

In recession-hit Britain, allotments

are more popular than ever.

And when Kay Sexton becomes

the proud holder of an allotment,

she hopes it will set her on the

road towards self sufficiency

for her family. Instead she finds

herself in a strange and hostile

world of rules, regulations and

hosepipe stand-offs.

If you love rambling, walking

the dog or just a casual stroll,

you’ll be delighted by this

beautifully designed collection

of quotations and excerpts

from classic and contemporary

writing. It’s a treasure trove

that’s humorous and evocative

– peppered with practical tips

on everything from walking

boots to where to spot wildlife.

And the great news is – you

can enjoy it from your armchair

without walking a step!

The Girl in the Painted Caravan

by Eva Petulengro

Published in paperback by

Macmillan, price £6.99

ISBN: 9780 3305 1 9991

Here’s a fascinating glimpse

into the Romany world of the

1940s and 1950s, just as society

was changing forever. Born into

a Romany family in 1939, Eva

Petulengro travelled the country

with her family in their painted

caravan, spending evenings

by the fire as they sang and

told stories of their past.

Eva describes the wonderful

characters in her family, as

well as the fascinating people

they met on the road. It’s a

story that’s moving, evocative,

romantic and very funny.

CONGRATULATIONS to Tony Malone of Goring, winner

of our Winter On the Shelf Competition. Tony wins a

complete set of Julie Round’s Lane trilogy. Happy reading!

But, after a rocky start, she

finds her feet in those mud-

caked Wellingtons, learns the

dark arts of the competitive

vegetable grower and battles

pest invasions on a truly

Biblical scale.

This witty, well observed

book contains some mouth-

watering recipes, too.

It’s the perfect read for

anyone who dreams of a slice

of the good life.

And here’s your chance to

win your very own copy.

To enter our prize draw, just

name the fruit and the vegetable:

1) Granny Smith, Orange Pippin

or Laxton’s Superb?

by Bill Brown

Published in paperback by

Orion, price £6.99

ISBN: 978 1 4091 2094 0

and London is getting back on

its feet. But rationing is not

over and for ten-year-old Billy

Brown this means business.

It’s the perfect time for a

mischievous boy with ambition

and imagination. He scours the

bombsites and markets, finds a

Saturday job at a scrap metal

yard and sells everything from

bricks to horse manure.

Bill brings to life a host of

wonderful characters – from the

new West Indian immigrants

and paints a heart-warming,

nostalgic picture of Britain

emerging from the ruins of

Dear Dr Sarah…

A. You and your friends may well be right!

The prostate (not prostrate) gland increases in size with

age – this is called Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy – and

many older men will experience the symptoms you

describe. It is important to get the diagnosis right though,

as there can be other causes or similar symptoms. Your GP

will examine the prostate gland by performing a rectal

examination and then arrange an ultrasound, possibly

with a biopsy, to check for cancer cells.

Dr Sarah Honess trained in Medicine at King’s College, London, and moved to Worthing in 2003, where she trained in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care. She now works in the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.

Q. I am a fit and

healthy man in my 70s.

Just recently I have noticed

more difficulty passing

urine, having to go more

often – particularly at

night – and a reduction in

the amount I am passing.

Chatting to some of my

older male friends, we

have diagnosed a prostate

problem! What’s the next

step?

Mr T. Holder, Worthing

Q. I have noticed I am becoming more breathless when

walking about, even though I have been previously fit. I don’t

seem able to lie down flat at night-time without waking up

breathless and now have to sleep propped up on three pillows.

My legs seem swollen, too, especially at the ankles. My GP said I

might need to take “water tablets”. What are these and where is

the water coming from?

Mrs N.Jeffry, Littlehampton

A. You don’t say how old you are or what other medical

problems you may have or have had. It sounds as though you

might have some of the signs and symptoms of heart failure. This

occurs when the ‘pump’ doesn’t work as well as it used to, and

leads to an accumulation of fluid in the lungs and tissues. This

is not helped by gravity, which is why the ankle swelling can be

more noticeable. Diuretics can help to get rid of some excess fluid

but your GP may also refer you to a cardiologist for further tests,

including an echocardiogram – an ultrasound of the heart – to

look at the way the heart is beating in real time.

Q. I have always had to watch what I eat and when I eat to

avoid excruciating heartburn. It seems to be getting worse and I

can’t even bend over or lie flat in bed without feeling a horrible

burning pain. What is the cause and can anything be done?

Mr T. Hunt, Worthing

A. You don’t say if you have seen your GP yet or if you are

taking any medication. It is important to find the cause before

planning any treatment. Your GP may refer you for a ‘camera

test’ or upper endoscopy, where a fibre optic tube is passes

down the gullet to have a physical look at the area. Persistent

‘indigestion’ always needs investigation and the symptoms should

not be ignored.

Q. I have recently started dating again after the break-up

of a long term relationship. I am very worried about sexually

transmitted diseases and in particular, conditions such as HIV

and hepatitis. How do I go about getting screened for these

conditions?

Name withheld

A. I’m sure it must be daunting to be back in the dating

game, particularly if it’s been some time. You are, of course,

correct to think about sexually transmitted infections when

considering a new relationship. You should always use barrier

contraception with a new partner. You may wish to consider your

risk factors for other sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV

and hepatitis. Your GP will be able to tell you where your local

clinic is. The Warren Brown Unit at Southlands Hospital has both

walk-in clinics and appointments if you wish to discuss this matter

further and arrange testing.

The Denture Detective

Uncomfortable dentures are

a crime. If they’re loose or ill-

fitting, your dentures can ruin

a meal, make conversation

difficult and adversely affect

your life in a big way. That’s

why you need an expert who

can track down those problems

and solve them for you.

“Don’t suffer in silence,” says Paul Cullen, Clinical Dental Technician at The Denture Studio. “Whatever your denture problem may be, I’ll find the answer.”

Paul is based in East Grinstead, but makes home visits with free initial consultation right across the area. This means he can assess exactly what you need and give the best advice without you needing to stir from your favourite armchair – from first visit to final fitting.

Sherlock could be his middle

name!

Put an end to criminal dentures, and give Paul a call on 01342 322171. Although The Denture Studio address has changed, the phone number remains the same. You’ll now find the practice at The Old Mill, 45 London Road, East Grinstead, RH19 1AW.

Ouch! Don’t cramp your style

If you wake from a deep sleep with cramp in your calf muscle, it’s not only a nasty shock, it’s horribly painful, too. And once you’ve got rid of it, the last thing you need is a recurrence. Here’s how you can make sure you’ll drop off again – and be pain-free.

Stretch in bed. If the cramp is mild, you might get away with stretching the calf muscle by drawing your foot up in the direction of your knee. But if this doesn’t work, there’s nothing else for it. You’ll have to get out of bed and walk up and down.

Massage the calf by rubbing upwards from the ankle towards your heart. If you get cramp regularly, try this before you go to sleep every night.

Sleep on your side with your knees bent and a pillow between them.

Loosen the covers. Duvets are great news, but if you’re still using heavy blankets, try loosening the weight of these on your legs. Don’t tuck them in too tightly, as they could be partly to blame for night cramps.

Get enough calcium. Calcium deficiency can cause your muscles to react strongly. Your recommended daily intake should be 700mg, so take a supplement if you think your calcium level may be low. It may be wise to check with your GP first.

Going soloAdjusting to life on your own has its ups and downs

When you lose someone dear

to you, perhaps someone

who has been your friend and

partner for many years, it may

help if you just allow your

feelings to come out. Talking

can help – but don’t feel

pressured into this. You’ll know

when the time is right to share

your emotions with others.

If your family isn’t around,

or you don’t feel able to talk

to them – for whatever reason

– there are other options to

consider.

Your GP can often help with

symptoms associated with

grief. If you can’t sleep, or feel

anxious or depressed, your

doctor can prescribe drugs

which will help.

Professional counselling can

help you express your emotions,

which may well be more

complicated than simply missing

your partner. Because there’s

no need to censor what you

say to a counsellor, it could be

a welcome opportunity to get

everything off your chest.

Ask about a befriending service.

Your local Age UK/Age Concern

can put you in touch with a

scheme where a volunteer will

visit or phone you regularly,

providing company and support.

Websites and chat forums

provide an anonymous place

where you can say what you really

feel in total freedom. It can be a

great help to chat to people who

have had similar experiences.

Don’t forget to feed yourself!

Just because you’re cooking for

one, there’s no need to starve.

Eating a well balanced diet and

maintaining a healthy weight

will help you stay well – and

look and feel better.

Lunch clubs can be a very

sociable way to do this.

Ask your local Age UK or

local charity for older folk if

they run one.
