The mission of SSA’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is to improve SSA programs and operations and protect them against fraud, waste and abuse. To accomplish this mission, the OIG directs, conducts, and supervises a comprehensive program of audits, evaluations, and investigations, relating to SSA programs and operations. Our Organization In addition to the Immediate Office of the Inspector General, the OIG has four major components: • Office of Audit – Conducts financial and performance audits of SSA’s programs and operations. • Office of the Counsel to the Inspector General – Provides independent legal advice and counsel to the Inspector General and OIG components and administers the Civil Monetary Penalty Program. • Office of Communications and Resource Management – Directs all OIG public affairs activities, provides budget, management, human resources, and IT support to the Inspector General and OIG components, and operates the Social Security Fraud Hotline and Fugitive Enforcement Program. • Office of Investigations – Conducts investigations of suspected fraud, waste, and abuse in SSA’s programs and operations. We have a staff of approximately 500 employees, 70 percent of whom are criminal investigators and auditors. However, we also employ a full range of occupations including, but not limited to, information technology specialists, attorneys, program analysts, and public affairs specialists.
