Hunter Inter Schools Public Speaking Competition

The Hunter Inter-Schools Primary Public Speaking Competition will again be conducted in 2019. All students at Cardiff North Public School are being given the opportunity to compete in the competition this year. The competition will include Early Stage 1, Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 levels.

All students at Cardiff North are required to prepare a speech at home and present this speech in class in Week 10 of this term. Comments from adjudicators outlining how you can help our students prepare for this speech are included further in this bulletin. Time limits are also included on this page.

Students will present these speeches in stages in front of their class teachers initially. Then the best 2 students from each stage will compete in the public speaking competition against other schools next term. These students will also share their winning speeches with our school at assembly next term on a date to be advised. Parents of these selected students will be invited to attend this assembly to watch their child.

Students will be marked according to strict adjudication criteria.

The Adjudication Criteria is as follows: MATTER - 40%

Creativity/originality of introduction / 10 Content / 20 Creativity/originality of conclusion / 10 METHOD - 30% Sustained audience engagement (humour, audience response) / 30 MANNER - 30% Presentation (enthusiasm, stance, spontaneity and naturalness of gestures, NO PROPS) / 30

Timekeepers will be used to ensure time limits are not exceeded. Speeches should not be theatrical productions, recounts or information reports. Content should be age appropriate. Students are permitted to select their own topics. No props are to be used .

Happy speech writing everyone!

Hunter Inter Schools Public Speaking Competition GENERIC COMMENTS FROM ADJUDICATORS WHICH MAY ASSIST IN THE PREPARATION OF YOUR STUDENTS

Duration of Speeches

Microphone or No Microphone? You do not have to use the microphone – this can inhibit some speakers; it is a personal choice so choose to stand where YOU feel comfortable – beside the microphone or behind it, but not too close. Topic – this needs to be age appropriate without being boring; something YOU, the student, really feels comfortable/enthusiastic/ passionate on which to speak. This is not a debate - the topic should be your personal choice, not a class assessment task. Introduction – this refers to the introduction or very first part of your speech & needs to grab the audience’s attention – dare to be a bit different, creative & original but take care not to turn it into a skit/drama performance. DO NOT say good morning/afternoon to the audience or introduce yourself and state the name of your topic as the compere has already done this. Sustained Audience Engagement

The judges will be noting how the audience, particularly the student audience is responding.

Make eye contact; use facial expressions.

Project your voice and speak clearly; try to stay calm & not rush or you will ‘throw away’ your great & clever lines or even start to mumble; varying the tone & volume of your voice will make your speaking more interesting.

Use humour to get the audience reacting, but take care not to overdo the ‘toilet’ humour or be too colloquial with the expressions you use.

Have small palm cards, not sheets of paper if you need – use these as cues to prompt the next idea you will talk about. If you just read, the audience will be bored as you can’t give them your wonderful smile, your eye contact etc.

Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) palm cards can have pictures/drawings on them to help.

Avoid singing or reciting poems as you will have changed your Public Speaking into a different type of performance – 1 or 2 very short quotes are OK.

Be informative – in an interesting way and stay on the topic. Presentation

Be enthusiastic – this can be contagious for the audience, so look excited, smile and be confident – you can do it! Be prepared - at home you have practiced in front of the mirror, your family may have helped you with hints or

suggestions; you have practiced in front of your classmates or even the whole school - your teacher has probably helped out too, so you are well prepared & have the timing right. BUT, take care not to be ‘over rehearsed’ as you will lose your natural freshness & spark.

Stance – stand with your feet a little way apart so you look confident; feel free to move if you need to add a big gesture, but try not to sway or jiggle or stand stiff as a pole. Gestures – use these to emphasis a point, assist your humour or sustain the audience engagement - be comfortable with them so they look natural & spontaneous. Gimmicks such as “put your hand up if…’ to the audience shouldn’t be overused. Rhyming speeches should be avoided . Conclusion – try to finish leaving the audience buzzing – be creative, original, funny. You DO NOT need to say ‘thank you for listening’ or ‘thank you for listening to my story’. (We already know you are very polite)

Stage 2 2 – 3 mins (warning bell at 2 ½

SWIMMING CARNIVAL - SAVE THE DATE

Our 2020 Swimming Carnival will be held at Coughlans Swim Centre on Thursday 28th November 2019. Please mark this date in your diaries! The carnival will once again be a whole school event for all students who are turning 8 years or over in 2020. Results from this carnival will be used to form the 2020 Zone Swim Team.

GREEN TEAM NEWS

Cardiff North Public School is taking part in Lake Macquarie City Councils 'Living Smart' Festival again this year. The Green Team alongside Miss Gillard will be entering CNPS into the gardening competition. The event will be in late September and students have begun designing our garden bed display. This display will focus on native Australian plants and the habitat of our school mascot, the platypus. If you have any bush rock, ferns or native reeds that you would like to donate, please let Miss Gillard or a Green Team member know. More information about this event will be communicated in later Bulletins.

STAR STRUCK 2019

Star Struck 2019 - ‘No Limits’ was a huge success. The 16 students in the CNPS dance group did an amazing job performing so beautifully. As usual for CNPS students, they displayed wonderful behaviour at all rehearsals and during show week. They all worked extremely hard to learn their dance ‘Come Fly With Me’ as well as the finale dance. Representing CNPS in Star Struck is a huge honour and is an opportunity for the students to create memories with their friends. It was a fun and exciting week for all teachers and students involved.

A special mention to Amelia W who was a member of the Hunter Signing Choir and performed at Star Struck too. Well done Amelia!

Mrs McMurray, Mrs McShane, Mrs Lindsay & Miss Stritch
