South Africa’s World Heritage site, Cape Floral Region Protected Areas, has been extended to double its size, following IUCN’s advice.

Inscribed on the World Heritage List since 2004, the site is one of the richest areas for plants on Earth.

This natural site is home to nearly 20% of the African continent’s flora.

Including the extensions, which was approved on 3 July 2015 following IUCN’s advice, the site covers 1,094,741 hectares.

Cape Floral is one of the richest areas for plants on Earth with outstanding diversity, density and endemism.

The Fynbos vegetation is unique to the Cape Floral Region.

Succulent plants in the Baviaanskloof Mountains, which are part of the World Heritage site.

Following the extension of the World Heritage area, Anysberg Nature Reserve is now part of Cape Floral Region Protected Areas.

The Garden Route Complex is another area that is part of the recent extension.
