Flower Types for Floral Design
Floral Design
Flower Types• Flowers come in all shapes and
sizes.• Flowers and floral products that
are used in Floral Designs can be grouped into 4 groups.– Mass– Line– Form– Filler– Foliage
• Each type of product has a special use and placement in a flower arrangement.
Mass Flowers• These are the main flowers used
to make the shape (outline) of the floral design.
• These flowers are usually round in shape and they can be placed to give the overall design type.– Examples:
•Roses•Carnations•Chrysanthemums•Sunflowers
Line Flowers• Tall slender stems with smaller
florets (little flower blooms) around the stem.
• These help make the structure (or skeleton) of the design. The create lines for our eyes to follow.– Examples:
• Snapdragons• Gladiolas • Delphinium• Dendrobium Orchids
Form Flowers• Used for a focal point or special
feature.• Usually unique with distinctive,
interesting shapes that draw attention.
• Usually use fewer in the design, because of cost and attention.– Examples include:
• Lilies (oriental, asiatic, calla)• Orchids (phaleonopsis, cymbidium)• Irises (dutch)
Filler Flowers• Groups of small or tiny flowers.• Used to fill up gaps in a design.• These are accents, not to draw attention
from the other flowers.• Includes “spray” stems of flowers:
– such as mini-carnations, roses, mums– these have multiple blooms per stem– Examples:
•Baby’s Breath•Statice•Solid Aster•Waxflower
Foliages• Foliages are the greenery used to
cover mechanics and add a natural effect to the overall design.
• Some specialty greens can also be used as focal points or add special interest to a design.
• Usually we use greens to cover foam or start a vase design.– Examples include:
– Leather Leaf– Comedor– Salal (lemon leaf)– Lily or Bear Grass– Myrtle
Flower Placement on Stem• Solitary
– These flowers have only 1 bloom on the end of the stem
• Roses, Tulips
• Spray – Multiple Flowers per stem
• Mini Carnations or Mini Roses
• Inflorescence– These flowers look like 1 large
flower head, but are actually lots of smaller blooms arranged in a cluster
• Hydrangea, Agapanthus
• Spike – Like a Line Flower, it has a longer
stem with smaller blooms on it• Snapdragons, Liatrus
