CAPAY’s YouthLearn program is a year long internship created to develop young leaders in Asian American communities. In the YouthLearn program, interns explore their own identities and community histories, and develop the skills to put what they learn into action. For a year, YouthLearn interns go through workshops on topics ranging from video making, to public speaking, to the history of immigration, to media and stereotypes. If you are accepted into the YouthLearn Program, you will attend weekly workshops in the summer. In the fall, you’ll help plan CAPAY’s annual Symposium, a one-day leadership conference for Asian American youth in the greater Boston area. You’ll shadow a community organizer over the winter and, by spring you’ll have the skills to plan and execute your own project for APA heritage month in May. Interns will be paid a stipend after they complete all the program requirements. Who is CAPAY? The Coalition for Asian Pacific American Youth (CAPAY) has been working with youth for over 14 years. We have a long-standing record of supporting youth work in the community and developing youth leadership. We are situated at UMass Boston campus and share an office with the Asian American Studies program with whom we work closely. We also hold an annual leadership symposium for Asian American high school youth in and around the Boston area. Though we encourage youth to find ways to connect and give back to their communities, the learning and experiences gained through this internship will benefit the participant no matter what field of work she/he chooses in the future. Critical and active citizenship are the main focuses of CAPAY and its YouthLearn program. How can I join YouthLearn? If you identify as Asian Pacific American and are between the ages of 13 to18. .. If you’re ready to… Attend workshops on Asian American studies, art and media skills, and leadership development
