1. Parent (n) :

Word formation: parental (adj)Definition: a mother or father of a person Ex: I'm going to meet Carl's parents for the first time this

2. Grandparent (n) :

Definition: the father or mother of a person's father or mother

Ex: grandmother / grandma

grandfaher / grandpaEx: I visit my grandparents once a week.


3. Uncle (n) :

Definition: the brother of someone's mother or father, or the husband of someone's aunt

Ex: We invited my Uncle Steve round for dinner.


4. Aunt(n) :

Definition: the sister of someone's father or mother, or the wife of someone's uncle

Ex: I have never seen my aunt, because she lives in Australia.


5. Cousin (n) :

Definition: a child of a person's aunt or uncle Ex: Many of our distant cousins, whom we hadn't seen for

years, came to my sister's wedding.


6. Nephew (n) :

Definition: a son of your sister or brother, or a son of the sister or brother of your husband or wife

1. Niece (n) :Definition: a daughter of your brother or sister, or a daughter

of your husband's or wife's brother or sister


7. In-laws (n) :

Definition: the parents of your husband or wife and other members of their family

Ex: We were staying with my in-laws in the first few years of

our marriage.


8. Twin (n) :

Word formation: twin (adj) Definition: either of two children born to the same mother on the same occasion

Ex: My sister has twin sons. Ex: twin towers


9. Only child(n) :

Definition: a child who has no sisters or brothers Ex: It is generally believed that an only child is tend to be spoilt

and irresponsible.


10. Adopted (adj) :

Word formation: adopt (v)Definition: an adopted child has been legally taken by another

family to be looked after as their own child Collocation: to have a child adopted (to give a baby to

someone else Ex: They've got two adopted children and one of their own. Ex: They have no children of their own, but they're hoping to

adopt.


11. Stepfather / stepmother (n) :

Stepfather definition: the man who is married to someone's mother but who is not their real father

Stepmother definition: the woman who is married to someone's father but who is not their real mother

Ex: He had a difficult childhood , because he never loved his

stepfather.


12. Stepson/ Stepdaughter (n) :

Definition: the son/daughter of your husband or wife from a previous marriage

Ex: Mary has three children including her step-son.


13. Stepsister (n) - stepbrother (n) :

Definition: not your parents' daughter/son, but the daughter/son of a person one of your parents has married

Ex: John has two stepbrothers and they all get along well.


14. Half-sister(n) - half-brother (n) :

Definition: a sister/brother who is the daughter of only one of your parents

Ex: Warren is my half-brother. We have the same mother, but

different fathers.


15. Married (adj) :

Definition: having a wife or husband Collocations: get married Ex: They are a nice married couple. Ex: My sister and her husband have been happily married for

10 years.


16. Single(adj) :

Definition: someone who is not married

Collocations: single-parent (n) Ex: The number of single-parent families dependent on the

state has risen enormously in recent years.


17. Separated (adj) :

Definition: husband and wife living in different houses but not legally divorced

Ex: Nancy and Edward are seperated but they haven’t divorced yet.


18. Divorced (adj) :

Word formation: divorce (v)Definition: married in the past but not married nowCollocations: get divorced Ex: They got divorced after only six months of marriage. Ex: She’s divorcing her husband after 15 years of marriage.


19. Widowed (adj) :

Word formation: widow (n) (a woman whose husband has died and who has not married again)

Definition: describes a person whose husband or wife has died Ex: He was widowed at the age of 35, and never got married

again.


20. Engaged (adj) :

Word formation: engagement (n)Definition: having formally agreed to marry Collocations: get engaged

21. Fiancée (n) – Fiancé (n)

Definition:

Fiancée : the woman who a man is engaged to be married to Fiancé: the man who a woman is engaged to be married to Ex: Have you met Christina’s fiancé ?


22. Same (adj) :exactly like another or each other

Ex: My twin sister and I have got the same nose.

23. Different (adj) :not the same

Ex: She seems to wear something different every day.

24. Alike (adj) : similar; like each other

Ex: The children all look very alike.


25. Adult (n) :

Word formation: adult (adj)Definition: a person or animal that has grown to full size and

strength Ex: An adult under British law is someone over 18 years old.Ex: Let’s try to be adult about this.
