Candida.auris (Emerging Health Care Associated Infecon) Guideline for Laboratory Diagnosis, Surveillance, and Infecon Prevenon & Control Directorate General for disease surveillance and control, MOH, Sultanate of Oman Background Informaon : Candida auris (C.auris) is a new strain of fungal pathogen that had emerged in many countries worldwide, including Oman 1,2,3 . It is a yeast species which was first isolated from the ear canal of a patient in Japan in 2009. Since then, C. auris has been associated with a variety of clinical presentations including ear infections, wound infections, intraabdominal infections, meningitis, and bloodstream infections. It was also found to colonize the skin of asymptomatic people. Reported C.auris has been linked to invasive infections associated with high mortality. It is considered a multidrug-resistant (MDR) yeast that have been found to have elevated minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) to one or more of the three major classes of antifungals, with some resistant to all three classes, therefore, severely limiting treatment options. C.auris can spread from patient to patient or from environment contamination to patients within healthcare settings and cause outbreaks. Data from countries experiencing significant C. auris outbreaks, suggest it can contaminate the environment and equipment of colonised or infected patients. This could include blood pressure cuffs, stethoscopes and other devices, as well as more invasive equipment such as intravenous cannulae and urinary catheters. Clinical experience to date suggests that colonisation is difficult to eradicate and tends to persist, making infection prevention and control strategies particularly important. Administrave measures: There is no reason for any health care facility to refuse care, admission or readmission of patients on the grounds that they are or have been colonized or infected with C. auris. Ensure that any health care facility is informed in advance of outpatient appointments or inpatient admissions about patient C.auris colonization. Ensure that standard infection control precautions are maintained at all times by patients, attendants, and staff.
