Aprimarylogomustbepresentoneverything.Toprovidegreaterdesignflexibility(horizontalandvertical)forprintandelectronicreproductions,theuniversitylogocanbeusedinsevenways:asaverticallogo,horizontallogostacked,horizontallogo,simplehorizontalwordmark,simpleverticalwordmark,verticalstackedlogo,

PLACEMENTANDSIZEOFTHEUSULOGOAgeneralpreferenceisfortheUtahStateUniversitylogotobeplacedonthefrontofallprintedandelectroniccommunications,bothinternalandexternal,forinstantuniversityidentification.Ifitdoesnotappearonthefront,itmustbeusedontheback.Thisincludesalluniversitymagazinesandnewsletters.Pleasenotethattheuniversityname,UtahStateUniversity(orUSU,UtahState,etc.)shouldalwaysbeplacedonthefrontwhetherthelogoisusedornot.Thishelpstoquicklyidentifytheuniversity,aprimaryfunctionoftheuniversitybrandidentityprogram.Theuniversitylogo,exceptinelectronicpublications,maybeplacedanywhereonthefrontorback.(SeeWebguidelinesforlogoplacementonWebpages).Theuniversitylogoshouldhaveaproportionallyweightedrole.Theminimumsizeallowedforapostcardorsimilarlysizedpublicationis5/8ofaninchtallfortheverticallogoand1/2-inchtallforthehorizontallogo.Asthepublicationsizeincreases,theminimumsizeofthelogoshouldincreaseproportionally.Forexample,itwouldbeinappropriateforthelogotobereproducedat1/2-inchonafour-footbanner.

Tocreateamoreuniformlookandfeelforofficialuniversitypublications,youareencouragedtouseoneofthefollowingfivefontsforday-to-daybusinesspublications:Univers,Helvetica,Arial,Garamond,TimesorUtahState.UtahStatefontisnotintendedforlargebodiesofcopy;useofthisfontshouldbelimitedtonomorethanonesentence.Thereisnolowercaseversionofthisfont.Donottrytomakealowercaseversionofthisfont.Therearenorestrictions,however,onuseofanytypefacesinuniversitypublications.Selectingappropriatetypefacesforpublicationsisessential,dependingonthepurposeofthepublicationandtheaudienceittargets.Whenproducingcommunicationsmaterials,variousweightsoffontsshouldbeusedforheadlines,bodycopy,captions,etc.TheexamplesshownbelowareasmallselectionofthemanyvariationsavailableinUnivers.Keyintheuseoffontsisconsistencyandlimitingtheiruses.Forexample,itisnotrecommendedthatallfivefontsbeusedatonce.Youareencouragedtolimityourselectiontotwo,contrastingfontsincombination,suchasHelveticawithGaramondorArialwithTimes.Bychoosingcertainfontsandstayingwiththem,youhelptocreatea“familylook”foryourpublications. USEOFDESIGNELEMENTS

AlluniversityentitiesarepermittedandencouragedtouseandpairtheirnameswiththeUtahStateUniversitylogo.Officialuniversityentitiesarenolongerpermittedtocreatetheirownlogosandmarkstobeusedinplaceoftheuniversitylogo.Thepurposebehindtheidentityprogramistocreateamoreunifiedimagefortheuniversity.Exceptiontothisruleinvolvesentitieswithloosetiestotheuniversity,littleornofundingfromtheuniversity,andbusiness-relatedentitiesthatneedtomarketandbrandthemselvestoremainfinanciallysolvent.EntitieswithspecialfundingandbrandidentityneedsrequireanexemptionthroughtheofficeofPublicRelations&Marketing.Collegesandentitiesarepermittedtocreatemarksthatuniquelyidentifythemsolongastheyarenotusedinplaceoftheuniversitylogo.Theseareconsidereddesignelements.Inanycase,ifelementsbeyondtheofficiallogoareincorporated,theymustbeusedseparately,butinconjunctionwith,theofficialuniversitylogo.Pairingdesignelementswiththelogoisnotpermitted.

AllClubSportsteamsfallundertheworkingumbrellaoftheCampusRecreationDepartment.Therefore,therearerulesthattheymustadheretoinordertostaycompliantwithUniversityprotocols.

1. SocialMedia;CampusRecreationpersonnelmusthaveaccesstoeverytypeofoutletthatteamsuseforpromotion.AllteamsmustabidebyrulessetinplacebytheCampusRecreationDepartmentandtheTrademarkLicensingDepartment.

2. Marketing/PrintMaterial;Allschedules,fliers,tickets,etc.mustbeapprovedthroughtheCampusRecreationDepartment.TheyareknowledgeableandheldaccountableforalloftherulesthataresetbytheTrademarkLicensingDepartment.

TRADEMARKSANDLICENSINGAllUtahStateUniversitytrademarksaretheexclusivepropertyofUSU.RegulationofallusesofUSUtrademarksisessentialtoprotecttheuniversityfromliabilityandtoprotectagainstdilutionofthetrademarks.USUauthorizationisrequiredforalltrademarkuses.Theuniversityhasdelegatedtheresponsibilityformaintaining,managingandlicensinguniversitytrademarkstotheTrademarkandLicensingDirectorthroughtheofficeofPublicRelations&Marketing.ThemissionandpurposeoftheLicensingandTrademarkPolicyisto:

1. EnsurepropercontrolanduseoftrademarksassociatedwithUSU;protectalluniversitytrademarksfromunauthorizeduses;andfacilitatetheprocessofgrantingauthorizationforlegitimateinternalandthird-partyuseofuniversitytrademarks.

2. PromoteUSUinaconsistentanduniformmannertoprotecttheuniversity’sreputation,nameandimagebypermittingonlyappropriateusesbyofficiallylicensedvendors.Thishelpstoassurethatonlyqualityproductsbeartheuniversity’strademarkswhilesafeguardingconsumersfrominferiorproducts.

3. Strengthenthetrademarksthroughrelationshipswithretailers,licensees,campusdepartments,studentorganizations,alumniandfans.

4. Generateroyaltyrevenuesthatcanthenbeusedtoprovidescholarshipstodeservingstudents.

Whatisatrademark?Atrademarkisanylogo,symbol,nickname,letter(s),word,sloganorderivativethatcanbeassociatedwithanorganization,company,manufacturerorinstitutionandcanbedistinguishedfromthoseofotherentriesorcompetitors.Inadditiontothetrademarkslistedintheregisteredandprotectedtrademarksection,anyindiciaadoptedhereafterandusedorapprovedforusebyUSUshallbesubjecttothepoliciesandproceduresofthetrademarkandlicensingpolicy.Additionally,thetrademarkandlicensingprogramshallalsocoveranyderivationsofUSUtrademarkswhichwouldcauseconsumerstoerroneouslybelievethattheproductoriginatedfrom,orwassponsoredorauthorizedbytheuniversity.RegisteredandProtectedTrademarks
