It is often only when we lose something that we realize itstrue value. In the same way, we tend to take our teeth forgranted until they are lost, and then it becomes painfullyapparent how important our teeth are in day-to-day life.Your smile is an integral component of your personal identityand part of what makes you recognizable to the peoplearound you. Healthy and beautiful teeth are not onlyattractive but they radiate vitality, self confidence, andlikeability.

Losing your teeth can be painful, uncomfortable, andembarrassing, but you are not alone. Millions of people losetheir teeth every year because of trauma, heredity, gumdisease (periodontitis), and poor oral hygiene, and millions ofpeople are turning to dental implants as a way to get theirquality of life back. With dental implants, your dentist canreplace your missing teeth with new durable teeth that lookand feel like your own. Even though we can’t see our teeth at the start of our lives,they are already there. During the course of life, our teethare put through a lot of stress which often leads to toothdamage or loss.

Tooth loss affects people of all ages for a variety of reasonsincluding:

• Trauma (e.g., sports injuries, accidents) • Decay • Diseases of the teeth and gums

(periodontitis/periodontosis) • Heredity • Poor oral hygiene • Bad nutrition

After skeletal growth is complete, dental implants are theoptimal solution at almost any stage in life. Even old age isnot a reason to refrain from implant treatment. The mostimportant prerequisites are an adequate amount of bone, theability to heal normally, and sufficient oral hygiene.

• Healthy neighboring teeth and the jawbone can becompromised by conventional tooth replacements such asbridges and prostheses. See the image on the left thatdemonstrates how neighboring teeth are ground down for a 3-unit bridge. Why destroy 2 healthy teeth when you canavoid it? Implants are a 1-tooth solution to a 1-toothproblem. Bridges turn a 1-tooth problem into a 3-toothproblem.

• Partial and full conventional prostheses (dentures) can causepressure points and impact the ability to taste as well astactile and temperature perception. Because of bone loss,loose fitting dentures have to be continually adjusted withfrequent office visits. Such problems can be prevented withimplants.

• When prostheses are unstable it becomes challenging toeat most solid foods, thus limiting your diet and affectingyour overall health. The inability to chew your foodproperly can lead to digestive problems and inadequatenutritional intake.

• When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone begins toshrink away, thus compromising adjacent teeth andchanging the structure of your face. (See images belowthat demonstrate facial changes due to bone loss.)Implants replace the natural tooth root to prevent boneloss, prevent facial changes, and prevent neighboring teeth from being compromised.

• Although implants may for the short term be moreexpensive than other forms of tooth replacement, theyhave a much better long-term prognosis. Over time,selecting implants as your treatment option will be morecost-effective.


What exactly is an implant?

CAMLOG® implants are made of commercially pure, medicalgrade titanium. This biologically compatible material is verytissue-friendly, has been long proven in medical technology,and is not known to cause any allergies. The prosthesisconsists of four components: the implant, the abutment, thescrew, and the crown. All together, the entire constructionreplicates the look and feel of a natural tooth. Different sizesand shapes allow your doctor to find the best solution foryou. On the left, you can see a magnified cross-sectionalview of a CAMLOG® implant with the abutment, screw, and crown.

If your dentist does not perform the surgical portion of theimplant treatment, he/she will refer you to a specialist forimplant placement. Your dentist will then take over the restof treatment as usual, from taking the impression right upuntil inserting the restoration, and will also perform regularcheckups. For illustrative purposes, the following pagesdemonstrate the entire implant treatment process.

If you have lost a single tooth, the resulting gap can be closedusing an implant, an abutment, and a crown. No healthyneighboring teeth are destroyed (as with a bridge) for thisprocedure. An implant is often the more esthetic solutioncompared to other restorative options. Modern ceramicmaterials allow a perfect reproduction of natural teeth.

You are missing several teeth.

Multiple missing teeth (edentulous spaces) can also berestored with implants. The implants then serve as supportingfixtures for your restoration in the form of a bridge or fixedpartial. If you lack several adjacent teeth in the rear of yourmouth, then implants are the best and only solution for afixed restoration. Without implants, only a removable partialdenture is possible, which has many disadvantages asdescribed on pages 4–5. Mechanical holding elements suchas clasps must be attached. Clasps are estheticallydispleasing, impair the comfort of wearing the denture, andmight damage the supporting teeth.

All of your teeth are missing.

Even if you have lost all your teeth, you do not need to settlefor a conventional full denture. Your dentist can offer youoptions with dental implants—a fixed or a removablereconstruction in the upper and/or lower jaw. Most peoplewith dentures are dissatisfied because their dentures becomeloose due to bone loss and create painful pressure spots.Adhesives or mechanical aids do not solve such problemspermanently or satisfactorily. Implants may present the bettersolution, depending on your circumstances and your desires.Wearing comfort can considerably increase with the numberof implants used to support the overdenture.

Like naturally grown teeth –it doesn’t take that long.

Only rough estimates can be made as to the duration of a

planned implant treatment. The timeline on the following

page demonstrates an average treatment time of five to eight

months. These times may vary greatly depending upon

numerous factors including the quality of bone in which the

implants are placed. Treatment time may increase for patients

with compromised bone, as an additional procedure to build

up the bone that will accept the implant is required.

safe and effective treatment designed specifically for you.

Remember, treatment plan and timeline vary from patient to patient. Your doctor willprovide you with an individual treatment plan designed specifically for you.

Healing takes time and effort.

A successful implant is one in which your body grows bonearound the implant and attaches to the surface of theimplant. This process is called osseointegration. Whenosseointegration is complete, the implant is stable and readyfor restoration. In order to ensure that bone grows as quicklyand naturally as possible to the implant, rest and patienceare very important. Healing time depends on factors such asbone quality and quantity. Your doctor will inform you of thecorrect behavior during this healing phase. Particularly in thefirst days after the operation, you should avoid anything thatmay stress the implant site:

• Ensure that you practice gentle, but effective oral hygiene.In this way, you can prevent bacterial infections that couldput the healing of your implant at risk.

• Do not chew any hard food.

• Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol, as both hinderthe healing process.

• Avoid severe physical strains.

• Don’t miss any appointments! Be open with your doctorand share all medical history and conditions.

recovery time. Typically you will

not need to take off of work.

Longevity – thanks to optimal care and regular checkups.

An implant is a valuable investment that will providegreat benefits to you. With proper care, you should beable to radiate a beautiful smile for the rest of your life.However, proper dental care is absolutely necessary inorder to enjoy the many benefits of your new teeth fortheir expected lifetime. Bacteria may cause infection,which may compromise the lifetime of your implant.Daily care using suitable hygiene techniques is of greatimportance. Your doctor will instruct you on proper oralhealth care with implants. In addition to thoroughmaintenance, you should visit your doctor at least twotimes per year to have your implants inspected. Youshould also undergo professional teeth cleanings on aregular basis.

As with any surgical procedure, a full consultation should becarried out before implant placement. Your dentist must firstobtain a precise overview of your oral status, your daily habitsand of your state of health. A detailed treatment and cost planwill inform you of the treatment phases and the associatedcosts. Remember that alternative treatments may not last aslong and often need to be replaced. Don’t spend more moneyover time on a treatment that initially seems less expensive.When evaluating tooth replacement options, talk to yourdentist about expected longevity of each treatment and thepotential for additional procedures required for maintenance ofeach treatment option. Consider these benefits when you makean investment with implants:

• your bone structure will be preserved

• your prosthesis will be fitted securely

• you will not destroy healthy teeth as required for a bridge
