Take a night off!Come dine with us and enjoy a great, inexpensive meal created from scratch in Calvary’s kitchen. If you are attending one of the many gatherings

here at church or would just like to have dinner with your family and friends, please stop in. All are invited, and all are welcome. The menus feature the cuisine of Chef Rod Pierce and his original recipes. The service from the Culinary Staff is warm and friendly, the food is wonderful, and the price is low. A wonderful tossed salad, Calvary’s Petit Pain Loaves, bottomless sodas, dessert, plus great center of the plate entrees and complimentary sides, all add to WFD’s casual dining experience. The cost is low, $5 for the featured meal, or $15 for the Family Meal which would be two adult and three Hero Meals. If children included in the Family Meal are served the featured meal or the Super Hero Meal the cost is an additional $2 each.

We serve from 5:00-6:30pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Questions5

with Lou DeGraafAdministrative Assistant, Compassion Ministries and Men’s Ministry

1 What is your role at Calvary Church?I am Administrative Assistant to Compassion

Ministries and to Men’s Ministry. Under the umbrella of Compassion Ministries are the Benevolent Assistance program, Financial Ministries, and DivorceCare. All three of these programs minister to many people going through some very difficult situations.

I also assist the Men’s Ministry Team helping them stay organized with the many different activities they offer to the men at Calvary.

2 What encourages you most as you minister at Calvary?

What encourages me the most is the generosity of Calvary’s congregation who give to the benevolent fund so that we can assist our Calvary families struggling in this tough economy with job loss, health issues, broken marriages and other circumstances that cause life to be a challenge. I am also encouraged by our many volunteers at the Yellow House who give their time every week sorting the piles of donated clothes for our Clothes Closet, stocking the shelves of our Food Pantry, serving as budget counselors helping people who struggle with money management, and many other tasks that would not get done without their faithfulness. It’s very encouraging to see them serving God so cheerfully.

3 How have you experienced life{together}?

God has hand-picked some amazing people from His family for me to experience life with. In addition to an adult Sunday class, I am involved in a couple of different small groups. Sharing life’s triumphs,

struggles, joy, pain and laughter are all part of how God continues to grow me, and knowing that I have close friends who will stop what they are doing anytime, anywhere to pray for me when I ask is a huge gift. I am blessed.

4 How has God recently revealed Himself in your community?

God reveals himself in my community every day. The trick is to remember to keep my eyes, ears and heart open to Him in order to recognize His power, His presence and what He is doing through my daily circumstances and routine. Sometimes He reveals Himself to me through encouraging phone calls, email, worship songs that pop into my head; other times He allows me the privilege of being Jesus to the ones He puts me in contact with. I communicate with a lot of hurting people every week, sometimes daily, and there have been many times when the Holy Spirit has put His words in my mouth to give hope to people who are being crushed by pain due to life’s circumstances or the choices of people close to them. I am awed by God’s patience, love and care both in my life and in the lives of those in my community.

5 How can the Calvary family pray for you and your ministry this month?

We desperately need more facilitators for our DivorceCare program. Calvary offers this class three times per year and there are usually 25-30 people from the Grand Rapids community attending each session. Also, please pray for the Yellow House staff. A lot of people come through our doors each week and they all need care. Please pray that we represent Christ well in the way we care for those who are hurting.

found in the calvary library

All the books mentioned are available in Calvary's Library. The Library is located across from Fellowship Hall on the lower level. The hours are Sunday, 9:15 - 11:15am; Wednesday, 9:15 - 9:45am; 6:00 - 7:30pm.

Invitation To A Journey has been a very influential book in my life and spiritual growth. It is a resource I keep close and return to often. In his book Mulholland brings a refreshing perspective to the process of Christian maturity −that dynamic and ever-developing growth toward wholeness in Christ for the sake of others.

Lorie Dewey,Pastoral Staff, Marriage & Family Life

We all need inspiration to lead lives that honor God. When our faith is weak or the pressures of the world seem over-whelming, remembering the great men and women of the past can inspire us to renewed strength and purpose. 50 People Every Christian Should Know gives a glimpse into the lives of such people as: Charles H. Spurgeon, A.W. Tozer and Fanny

Crosby. Combining the stories of fifty of these faithful men and women, author Warren W. Wiersbe offers you insight and encour-agement for life’s uncertain journey.

Scripture is filled with examples of men and women whom God used late in life, often with great impact — Noah, Abraham and Elizabeth to name a few. They were ordinary men and women who discovered that the later years of life can be some of the most rewarding and fulfilling. In his latest book, Nearing Home, Billy Graham - now in his 90s,

explores the challenges of aging while anticipating the hope of being reunited with his wife, Ruth, in his heavenly home. Graham shares the challenges of fading strength but still standing strong in his commitment to finishing well.

Though she cannot speak, Elizabeth Bonker writes poetry that shines a light on the hidden inner world of autism and the world around us. I Am in Here is the spiritual journey of a mother and daughter who refuse to give up hope, who celebrate their victories and who keep moving forward despite the obstacles. Elizabeth’s poetry and her mother’s

stirring storytelling combine in this inspirational book to proclaim that there is always a reason to take the next step – with hope. (Also available on Audio CD)

In this year of ‘community’ at Calvary, Encouragement: The Key to Caring is a very timely read, in that it draws out the contrasts between “surface” and “genuine” community. Further, you will learn that the key to relationship building is not total openness, but rather total commitment to one another. The reader will be blessed by the several chapters which explain how to create an open and restoring environment in a group, using several techniques of encouragment.

Tom Couch,Pastoral Staff, Senior Adults & Pastoral Care

Evidence Not Seen, is by far one of my favorite books. Rose has written a truly inspiring, eloquent account of her amazing faith in the face of horrific circumstances during her captivity in WWII. If you are interested in knowing what it means to truly trust God, in spite of personal loss, read this. Darlene Diebler Rose has greatly encouraged me as a Christian.

experiencing community at calvary

Our goal at Calvary is to see every believer experiencing authentic Christian community. A Community Group is a great place to build meaningful relationships; join us this winter! New groups will be forming on February 12 at our Community Group Launch. We would love for you to experience community here at Calvary Church.

To join one of the new groups, plan to attend the launch on February 12 and complete a registration form located at the Connection Point, on the web at calvarygr.org, or call Brenda Neher at 616-956-9377, ext. 5650.

Mary HulstWomen’s Community Group

Our community women’s group began this past fall. Though each

of us came from different places in life, we have grown temendously

in our shared bond of love for Christ and our love and care for

each other.

Tammy LedfordFamily Community Group

Our community group is a blessing and it is apparent that, while the families were assigned to our group by Calvary Church, God certainly had His hand in the mix of choosing the families with their various walks of life, spiritual backgrounds and

challenges that they each face.

You may have noticed the sign in the Sanctuary flashing 5000* quite often. This means that we have to turn children away from our nursery and preschool unless certified people are able to leave the service and help us. In order to care for these children, and to allow their parents to worship, serve in another ministry, or attend an Adult Sunday Class, we need over 220 volunteers.

The Parent Pledge is a great opportunity for parents of pre-school and nursery age children to see first hand the atmosphere in our Children’s Ministry classrooms and what they are learning each week. This is strictly a volunteer opportunity and you are not required to participate. However, this small donation of your time once every 3 monhts will go a long way to fill our current needs.

There are sign-up sheets by the nursery areas under a “Parent Pledge” banner for those of you that are able and desire to serve. You will need to have a background check prior to serving. You can pick up a Records Check at the nursery check in area.

If you have any questions, please contact Heidi Storms ([email protected]) at ext. 5161.

DiscoveryGod has designed you in a way that is totally unique from everyone else. That means that you have special gifts that ONLY YOU can give to serve God and others. We want to empower you to find the right fit in ministry. “From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every support-ing ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work” (Ephesians 4:16).

Discover your spiritual gifts and how you can use them at Calvary. Pick up a Discovery packet at one of the Information Centers on Sunday morning or contact Judie Fielstra ([email protected]) at ext. 5095.

5000? WHAT’S THAT ALL ABOUT?Did you know that when the number 5000 is displayed, it means that we are in need of more help in the nursery/preschool area? Any certified children’s volunteer can be of help at these times. Just go to the children’s area and find a team leader in the nursery wing who can direct you to the classroom where the help is needed. Not certified? Go to the children’s check-in desk for an application.

Special Needs Ministry

Off to Church We Go!By Grace Gibson, Ministry VolunteerRecently, Steve Gibson and his daughter Grace joined the special needs staff in one of the monthly Hope Network Chapel services.

I had the privilege of going to Hope Network with my dad. I was able to help my dad with a teaching time. It was an amazing experience! The people were very friendly and happy to talk to us. They wanted to be around us, just to know us, and to be our friend. They especially wanted to be around me because I am a kid and they don’t get to see kids a lot. At first I was a little nervous, but once I got there and started talking to them, I wasn’t nervous anymore. I loved

it, had a wonderful time and would like to go back again sometime.

If you feel God tugging at your heart strings to serve within this ministry, please give us a call. Elleen Fitzgerald // [email protected] // ext. 5623Judie Warner // [email protected] // ext. 5272*

Learning to See Like GodBy Dawn Snedeker, Ministry Volunteer

I started to work with the Special Needs Ministry because my husband was involved in it and thought it would be good to share in a ministry together. I didn’t realize how God was going to change my heart in the process. After half-heartedly attending some

of the meetings in the last couple of years, I finally applied to be an official volunteer and went through the application process.

After being approved, I was asked to help lead the Special Needs Choir as a regular commitment. This is where God has really changed my heart. He is teaching me how to love anyone, no matter how God has chosen to create them. This doesn’t just apply to Special Needs people, it applies to everyone I meet. The Special Needs Choir was just the tool God used to show me how much He loves everyone equally and that it’s the way He wants me to love

everyone. When I opened my heart to the students in the choir, God gave me eyes to see how much everyone needs to feel special.

As teachers of the Seekers Class with students who have special needs, it can be difficult to predict exactly how a lesson is going to go. With God’s help, we accomplish the special task of presenting God’s Word to Meika, Simeon, Brandon, Rebekah, Garrett, Weston, Jo – Jo and Jessica each week at 11:15 am in room 112.

This year the students are learning about the meaning and power of prayer. Using scripture, the class will be able to answer questions such as: What is prayer? Why and when do we pray? Who do we pray for and how we can praise God through prayer?Similar to the Explorers Class, the Seekers will be introducing “center-based” learning,

a teaching method that encourages one-on-one interaction between students and volunteers as they complete activities that drive home the objective of the lesson. If you are interested in learning more about Calvary Church’s special needs ministry or specifically the Seekers class, please connect with Elleen Fitzgerald or Judi Warner. Volunteers and students are always welcome to join us.

Life has a way of overwhelming a marriage: jobs, kids, activities, errands. Before you know it, checking your e-mail is more important than carving out a date night. We want to offer you a chance to make a change: a time to rediscover each other and find more intimacy in your life together.

This month we invite you and your spouse to join Calvary’s Marriage Ministry Team at the Family Life Weekend to Remember Marriage Getaway!

The getaway will be held at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, February 24-26. Registration cost is normally $318, but with our Calvary discount you can register for $159 – that’s half the normal price! (hotel and meal cost not included)

Recently, I donated my 1997 Toyota Corolla to the rescue mission. Would you consider my donation to be a “first-fruit,” or a “leftover?” After two teenage drivers, two accidents, and a backyard

paint job, it clearly fell into the leftover pile. From my perspective, the mis-sion actually did me a favor by taking this car off my hands.

Car donation programs benefit nonprofit organizations, but they also ben-efit the donor. While some people give car donations that are more valuable than mine, no one drives a new car out of the showroom directly onto the mission parking lot and signs over the title. We want to enjoy that new car smell as long as we can. When it wears off, we might give away the last few miles. Unfortunately, some Christians approach giving in the same way. Instead of sacrificing our best for the Lord, we’re tempted to give God what’s left over.

King Hezekiah is a great example of someone who lived the “firstfruit” prin-ciple. When he became King, he could have built a new palace, expanded his army, or just stockpiled gold and jewels for himself. Instead, he gave the Lord first place in his budget. His example teaches three important giving principles.

Givers are LeadersHezekiah gave first and set the example for everyone to follow (2 Chroni-cles 31:2-3). Generous giving isn’t just for people sitting in the pews. Giv-ing must be a personal priority for the elders, deacons, and pastoral staff. Leaders must lead by example, not just words. The same principle applies to developing spiritual disciplines in our families. Children don’t learn the im-portance of attending church, by being dropped off at the door. They catch a passion for the Lord as they see their parents serve faithfully. Likewise, children learn generosity by seeing the grace of giving modeled by their parents.

Simply ObeyIn 2 Chronicles 29, Hezekiah re-established the Temple worship and the people responded with an abundant offering to celebrate. Later, Hezekiah

challenged the people to give to sustain worship. “As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the firstfruits of their grain, new wine, oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything” (2 Chronicles 31:5).

The people’s immediate response is impressive. They didn’t hesitate by de-bating everything else they could have done with the resources. They simply obeyed. Satan doesn’t want you to put Christ first in your finances. He wants to fill our hearts with questions that distract us from giving. “You really should be saving for your kid’s college fund.” “Sure, you could give to support that missionary, but you’ve got to think of your retirement.”

Paul encouraged the Corinthian believers that if they would be generous, God would bless them in such a way that they could be “generous on every occasion” (2 Corinthians 9:11). When you simply obey and give, God will give you more opportunities to be generous.

Piles of MoneyThe most amazing fact about Hezekiah’s story is that the people gave so much grain that they had to pile the offerings in heaps. The chief priest re-joiced, “Since the people began to bring their contributions to the temple of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and plenty to spare, because the LORD has blessed his people, and this great amount is left over.” (2 Chronicles 29:10).

Can you imagine if our offering plates were so full that we had to pile the money in heaps on the platform? What if we had so much “left over” that we had to think of ways to invest in the Kingdom? What could our church accomplish if money were no object? How many more missionaries could we support? What new outreach ministries could we develop? How many more churches could we plant?

Generous giving produces heaps of ministry. Instead of giving our leftovers, we should generously give our best, so our church will have an abundance of leftovers to spread the Gospel locally and globally. If you want to learn more about “firstfruits” giving, go to generousyou.org.

Calvary Church has been designated a 2012 Best Christian Workplace. Calvary qualified for this honor due to high scores in the anonymous BCW employee survey taken in September 2011. Employees of Calvary Church answered more than 50 questions measuring how well Calvary is doing when it comes to employee job satisfaction, employee organizational commitment, Christian witness, super-visory effectiveness, opportunities for personal growth and development, cus-tomer/supporter satisfaction, teamwork, communication and fairness of pay and benefits.

We praise God for continuing to bless this church. This is the second time we have taken this survey and we have seen tremendous progress from the previous results. As a team, the staff continues to seek to make their workplace

the best it can be. We appreciate their efforts and are grateful for the opportunity to continue growing together.

The Best Christian Workplaces Institute’s vision is that Christian workplaces would be the best and most effective workplaces in the world and their employee survey is one way that they help to equip Christian organizations to be just that. BCWI is a research based organizational and hu-man resources consulting firm based on Mercer Island, Washington.

These are just some of the comments received from those surveyed:

Calvary is a great place to work. I truly feel those in supervisory capacities are looking toward the best interest of all involved, the church, the employees and the congregation. It is a huge responsibility to do this and to do it well.

Calvary staff support professional efforts and also care about each other personally.

I feel like the staff throughout the organization is committed to building God’s Kingdom and that they love each other in working towards that end.

I very much appreciate the spiritual depth of my co-workers. They all motivate me to keep growing in my faith.

Third Monday PrayerFebruary 20, 11:30am-12:30pm, Room 207

Are you burdened for the world? Would you like to feel more connected to our global workers? Do you believe in the power of prayer? On the third Monday of every month, a group meets to hear updates about our missionaries around the world, and to lift them up in prayer. We gather for lunch, and then spend half an hour or so in prayer. We would love to see you there; bring your lunch (light snacks are available) and join us.

Short-Term Missions: Praying, Sending, Going

Our first of many short-term teams for 2012 has completed their trip to India to work alongside our missionaries, Jonathan & Hannah Victor. This team of eight ministered to the local people there by providing medical services, and by adding onto the playground that was established by last year’s team.

Additional trips planned for 2012 in-clude Honduras, Ukraine, Mozambique, and Central Asia. You can be part of one or more of these teams by offering your prayer support, financial support, or by going. Many times, members of our teams are under-funded – whether adults, students, or young adults. You can show your support in a tangible way by participating in fund raising projects, or by contributing to scholarship funds. Please be in prayer as to how God would have you involved this year. Watch the weekly bulletin for meeting dates and times on specific trips.

building community ... building god's kingdom

With our church focus this year on community, the Missions & Outreach Department is planning to help each of us to think globally and act locally.

Being a “Glocal” Christian. On Sunday, April 15, we will be challenged in this area by great speakers and practical forums designed to help you understand what it means to live “glocally.”

On Saturday, April 28, we will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on a family in our city by partnering with Habitat for Humanity. What better way to unite your Calvary Community Group than to serve side-by-side in the greater community toward a common goal? Save the dates, and watch for more details to come.

STUDENT MISSIONS

WE BElIEvEin serving and being used by God in various ways. Each summer we take students locally, across the country, and around the world as we partner with various ministries and missionaries to serve on missions trips. While we believe in the work and ministry that takes place on these trips, we also strongly believe that mission trips are a place of growth for students—spiritually, mentally, and emotionally.

This summer is no different. We’ll be taking students on trips to both urban and rural settings and have them interacting with kids, teenagers and adults in those communities as well as with students from other churches. They will be serving by doing work projects, leading kids clubs and sports camps, helping lead summer camps for teenagers and more. Team members will have unique opportunities to develop relationships as they prepare to go and serve.

The hustle and bustle of Charleston—West Virginia’s capital city—stands in contrast to other more rural towns nestled in the Appalachian Mountains. But the city still maintains the rugged beauty and relaxed, comfortable pace that characterizes West Virginia. Our group will primarily serve children’s programs and local ministries.

This summer we are partnering with a local church in Honduras. We’ll be joining a team of Honduran teenagers and working alongside of them to minister to young children at an elementary school, helping to spruce up their school, and put on a camp for the church’s Hero’s Club program. It is sure to be a time where God will speak into your life, change your heart, and use you for His glory.

Be a part of this amazing missions trip where we serve in our own community. Often we fail to notice all the needs that are all around us. On this trip we will serve the needy right here in Grand Rapids. We will partner with urban ministries that are reaching out to those in need. Don’t miss out on this life-changing experience.

Several expenditures are made on behalf of each team member in advance of the trip, including payment to partner organizations and transportation (such as airfare). Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other Christians and

do life together. When you experience true community, you have close friends who meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word, and care for one another. In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or sign up at calvarygr.org.
