Sustainable Development

The sustainable development is "development that meets the

needs of the present without compromising the ability of future

generations to meet their own needs”,- Brundtland Commission,

1987)

Resource Efficiency is key for sustainable development

“Industrial development and economic growth are tightly linked to

resource use and contribute to rising commodity prices, countries

have become more dependent on natural resource imports

resulting intensified global competition over limited resources and

may jeopardize growth and stability in the future.”

Sustainable ENWA Technologies (SENWA):Introduction

•  Sustainable and environmental engineering,

•  Energy and water management services.

•  To support our clients in developing the optimal

energy efficiency projects for their needs

•  To provide an attractive means to finance the

implementation.

California: Greener, Getting more Greener

- California is the 15th largest emitter of greenhouse gases (GHGs)

worldwide, representing about 2% of global GHG emissions.

- AB 32 –State plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 to 1990

levels, and ultimately achieving an 80% reduction from 1990 levels by

2050.

•  Targets buildings

•  Improve 6% of existing homes by 25% each year for 10 years

- California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) Strategic Plan

•  New Homes – Net Zero Energy by 2020

•  Existing Homes – 40% improvement by 2020

California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requirements

California: Greener, Getting more Greener

•  California has a long history of Energy Efficiency, CA’s Energy

Efficiency Programs have helped keep per capita electricity

consumption in California flat over the past 30 years. Consumption

(KWh) is growing at a rate of 2%per annum while demand (kW) is

growing at 2.4% rate. In 2010, California’s per capita energy

consumption ranked 48th in US.

•  Energy use percentage correlate to Green-House-Gas (GHG)

production and fuel procurement needs. Currently 42% of the fuel

used to create CA’s electricity does not produce GHG. In 2011, California ranked third in the Nation in conventional hydroelectric generation,

first in net electricity generation from other renewable energy resources, and

first as a producer of electricity from geothermal energy.

BRICS: The Largest Economies by 2030 1.  In 2011, Brazil became the world’s Sixth-largest economy. 2.   Russia is currently the Ninth-biggest economy. 3.   India currently stands as the 10th-largest economy in gross

domestic product (GDP) in nominal terms, and is the fourth-largest economy in terms of GDP at Purchasing Power Parity (PPP).

4.  In 2010, China became the Second-biggest economy in the world.

5.   South Africa is ranked as the 26th-largest economy. 6.  BRICS countries offer young populations, rapidly expanding

domestic markets, and economies that are growing at a significantly faster rate than most G7 countries.

BRICS: Population, GDP & Trade

•  BRICS total GDP of close to $14 trillion now nearly equals that of the United States and is even bigger on a purchasing power parity basis.

•  Together, they make up 43 percent of the world's population, •  25 percent of the world's landmass, and about 20 percent of global GDP. •  They already control some 43 percent of global foreign exchange

reserves, and their share keeps rising. •  The middle class is rising in BRIC countries and estimate 2 billion will join

it by 2030.

BRICS: Requirements

•  Urbanization and increase of middle classes: – Boost of private

consumption

•  Investment to close the infrastructure gap and to promote

import-led economy

•  Sustained demand for commodities and energy sources

•  Financial Resources: o  Credit for increasing consumption and investment, also housing

o  Development of pension systems (population aging increasingly an issue)

•  Opportunities related to inclusive growth challenge o  Education, health policies, social protection

BRICS: Opportunities for CA Companies

•  Urban Sustainability

•  Green Buildings and Affordable

Housing,

•  Green Building Materials

•  Construction Machinery

•  Transportation,

•  Biofuels,

•  Renewable energy

•  Energy efficiency

•  Electrical Equipment

•  Water Treatment,

•  Waste Treatment & Recycle,

•  Preserve natural ecosystem,

CA & BRICS: Partnership for Sustainable Development

•  An integrated policy mix geared towards resource

efficiency supports economic growth as well as

environmental policy objectives.

•  Future strategies for sustainable economic growth must

address natural resource use and achieve an absolute de-

coupling of resource extraction from economic growth.

Page 13: California & BRICS

CA & BRICS: Partnership for Sustainable Development

•  Technological Innovations: changes of the input coefficients in

selected sectors and supply-chains, such as a reduction of the

consumption of chemicals in agriculture due to biotechnology

and the introduction of new materials in the automotive sector.

•  Recycling and Material Efficiency: increase of metal recycling

and higher resource efficiency in the use of industrial and

construction minerals.

•  R&D and technical progress: subsidy of research and

development of firms with a total of 1% of public consumption,

financed by a corresponding reduction in public consumption.
