“ Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall be saved”
Psalm 80
Sunday, November 29th, 2020 – First Sunday of Advent - Cycle B Readings: Isaiah 63: 16b-17, 19b; 64:2-7, Psalm 80 “Lord, make us turn to you; let us see your face and we shall
be saved”, 1 Corinthians 1: 3-9, Mark 13: 33-37
Today we begin another liturgical year with Advent. The pagans used the word “advent” to mean the coming of their
god. One day a year they exposed a statue of it; they were convinced that in this way the god would make its presence
felt among the faithful, and would hand out blessings and favors. The word “advent” also meant the visit of a king to a
city, or the coronation day of a sovereign. The christians applied these various meanings to the “coming” of God into
the world, who sent his son Jesus Christ. Advent is used specifically to identify the period of time set aside to prepare
for this “visit”.
Hasn’t Jesus already come? Why act as if he were to come again? Is Christmas just a birthday and Advent a time of
preparation for it? No, Advent is not this. The word of God tells us that Jesus has not come just once. He has come and
keeps coming, but do we recognize him? Can we see his presence in our life? Are we afraid that he will ask of us
things we are not willing to give? Do we prefer to keep our eyes and ears closed? There is a great need for the coming
of Jesus!
The attitude of expectation is one which the church wants to encourage in us, her children, permanently. She sees it as
an essential part of our Christian drill that we should still be looking forward to. The church reminds us in these four
weeks to Christmas to prepare, so that we can get ourselves ready to celebrate Christmas once more. This season is a
time of preparation and of hope. Come, O Lord, and do not delay. Let us make straight his path. The Lord is soon to
arrive.
I wish you a fruitful advent season.

Julia Greeley (1833 and 1848-1918)
Julia Greeley was born into slavery, at Han-nibal, Missouri, sometime between 1833 and 1848. Freed by Missouri’s Emancipation Act in 1865, Julia subsequently earned her keep by serving white families in Missouri, Colo-rado, Wyoming and New Mexico—though mostly in the Denver area. Julia entered the Catholic Church at Sacred Heart Parish in Denver in 1880, and was an outstanding sup-porter of all that the parish had to offer.
The Jesuits who ran the parish considered her the most enthusias-tic promoter of devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus they had ev-er seen. Every month she visited on foot every fire station in Den-ver and delivered literature of the Sacred Heart League to the fire-men, Catholics and non-Catholics alike. A daily communicant, Julia had a rich devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Blessed Virgin and continued her prayers while working and moving about. She joined the Secular Franciscan Or-der in 1901 and was active in it till her death in 1918. As part of the Cause for Canonization, Julia’s mortal remain were transferred to Denver’s Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on June 7, 2017. In a 1939 article in the Denver Cath-olic Register, titled “Saintly Negress Nurse to Little White An-gel,” Julia is said to have been so anxious for her little charge to be a practicing Catholic that she placed a rosary in the baby’s little fingers and, when the child was just 4 months old, tried very hard to teach her to pray. The little baby, Marjorie, was the daughter of George and Agnes Urquhart. Julia went every day to care for the child. The only picture we have of Julia is the one in which she is holding Marjorie at 7 months old; in the photograph, a white ro-sary is visible in Marjorie’s hand.
Sr. Thea Bowman, FSPA (1937-1990)
Sr. Thea Bowman, FSPA was a self-proclaimed, “old folks’child,” Bowman, was the only child born to middle aged parents, Dr. Theon Bowman, a physi-cian and Mary Esther Bowman, a teacher. At birth she was given the name Bertha Eliza-beth Bowman. She was born in 1937 and reared in Canton, Mississippi. As a child she converted to Catholicism through the inspira-tion of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration and the Mis-sionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity who were her teachers and pastors at Holy Child Jesus Church and School in Canton. During her short lifetime (52 years), many people considered her a religious Sister undeniably close to God and who lovingly invited others to encounter the presence of God in their lives. She is ac-claimed a “holy woman” in the hearts of those who knew and loved her and continue to seek her intercession for guidance and healing. Source: In a Word. Volume 39. No.9. November 2020. Domingo, 29 de noviembre de 2020 - Primer domingo de Adviento - Ciclo B
Lectura: Isaías 63, 16b-17. 19b; 64, 2b-7, Salmo 79 “Señor, muéstranos tu favor y sálvanos”, 1 Corintios 1, 3-9,
Marcos 13, 33-37
Ven, Señor, y no te demores. Enderecemos
su camino. El Señor llegará pronto.
Les deseo una fructífera temporada de Adviento.

An Advent Prayer
God of light and hope, look upon us in love,
and fill us with the Spirit of Jesus that we may love you and serve you in your kingdom.
Protect us during these weeks and keep us watchful in prayer
As we await the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ, Who is the light of the world,
And who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
One God , for ever and ever. Amen
Prayer to St. Roch (patron of contagious illnesses) O Blessed Saint Roch,
Patron of the sick, Have pity on those
Who lie upon a bed of suffering. Your power was so great
When you were in this world, That by the sign of the Cross,
Many were healed of their diseases. Now that you are in heaven,
Your power is not less. Offer, then, to God Our sighs and tears
And obtain for us that health we seek Through Christ our Lord.
Amen. (Repeat the following 3 times)
Saint Roch, pray for us, That we may be preserved
From all diseases of body and soul.
Ofrecer, entonces, a Dios
