From the Commander Cobras,

September has been a busy yet productive month for the team. After completing Combat Live Saver training at the end of August, we immediately began preparing for the upcoming FMSU field training exercise (FTX). Despite the high mission OPTEMPO we face in providing financial management support to the community, our NCO’s have taken significant strides to ensure that we will excel during the FTX. Amidst these tasks, we even completed all our training requirements ahead of schedule.

This month, we regretfully bid farewell to five members of the Cobra family: SPC Moreira, who departs to Korea, PFC Parks (Ft. Lewis), SFC Polati (Warrior Transition Unit), SPC Parker (Ft. Stewart), and SGT Stephenson (Ft. Bragg). Thank you for all your hard work and service to this unit and the Vicenza Community. Safe travels and continue to do great things at your next duty assignment.

I would like to recognize some outstanding Soldiers who exemplify the Cobra values. SGT Cheruiyot was recognized this month as the 16th Sustainment Brigade Safety Warrior of the Month. SGT Cheruiyot noticed that the fire extinguishers in the barracks were expired and were not replaced due to a supply shortage. Yet, his persistence, attention to detail, and unyielding care for Soldier wellbeing led to the fielding of new fire extinguishers in every barracks room. SGT Cheruiyot’s actions are testament to the caliber of NCOs in Charlie Detachment. Amongst our junior Soldiers, I want to commend SPC Ayoade for scoring above a 300 on this month’s Army Physical Fitness Test.

Additionally, I want to congratulate SPC Adebesin and his wife on the upcoming birth of their newborn baby. On behalf of the detachment, I wish you and your wife a successful and healthy delivery.

Lastly, I want to thank each and every one of you for all that you do—you push me to be a better Soldier, Leader, and Commander each end every day. Do not take this experience for granted; not everyone gets to live overseas and experience Italian and European cultures. Continue to be safe and vigilant of your surroundings as you travel. Everything that you do reflects upon the readiness of this unit. Take pride in doing the right thing even when no one is looking. I commend you all on your dedication and motivation that continue to drive us forward.

From the Detachment Sergeant Cobras,

I want to thank everyone for their efforts in moving the detachment forward.

We have come a long way, but still have bigger strides we have to take as a team. I want to challenge all of you this upcoming month to apply influence in our organization to continue to move in a positive direction. I want you all to take more initiative, and look for ways to improve the detachment as a whole and your sections as a whole.

When you look at ADP 6-22 it talks about applying influence "Influence falls along a continuum from commitment, where followers willingly act for a higher purpose, to compliance, where followers merely fulfill requests and act in response to the leader’s positional power. The degree of commitment or compliance affects initiative taken, motivation to accomplish missions, and the degree of accepted responsibility. Commanders expect subordinate leaders and Soldiers to commit to successful mission accomplishment. Trust, commitment, and competence enable mission command and allow the freedom of action to be operationally agile and adaptive."

I challenge you as a Squad Leader, as a Section Leader, and as an individual Soldier to apply yourself to bringing your "A" game to the table. Ask yourself what can I do to influence others, to move into a more positive direction? How can I contribute more to the team? Take initiative, don't wait to be told what to do, instead take action. If you know that something has to be done, do it. Get your teammates involved, work together to accomplish the overall mission and we will be that much more successful as a team.

ADP 6-22 states the following about leaders and courage "It takes personal courage to take the initiative to make something happen rather than standing by or withdrawing and hoping events will turn out well. Leaders require personal courage when confronting problems of discipline or disorderly conduct, when innovation and adaptation are needed to try something that has never been done before, when leading Soldiers in harm’s way, when being candid with a superior about a risky or improper course of action, when deferring to a more technically competent subordinate, or when freeing units and personnel to solve problems. Leaders must have the courage to make tough calls, to discipline or demand better when required. Consistent and fair leaders will earn the respect of their followers."

Be a proactive leader. Remember we are all leaders, our actions speak volume of how we accomplish our mission and take care of our Soldiers. Continue to motivate an influence one another. Challenge your battle buddies to put fourth maximum effort and together we will all build a more dynamic team, in which we can all take pride.
