Bart Dailley introduced our guest speaker Mr. Rick Hanson. As Chief of Police Mr Hanson discussed the Crime, Prevention and Reduction Continuum of the Calgary Police Service. Our Police Service is committed to reducing crime in our community by working with community partners to develop comprehensive strategies to address education, prevention, early intervention, treatment and enforcement. The ultimate goal of these strategies is to keep individuals out of the formal justice system when appropriate and to treat the underlying causes of their criminal behavior. Rick impressed everyone on how important it is to prepare our children and grandchildren for dealing with our new culture. Computers, technology, drugs, and gangs are all very real, and kids need to know how to deal with these issues. This fall 15 elementary schools will pilot the Start Smart Stay Safe Children’s project designed for students K thru Grade 12. The curriculum will focus on enhancing children’s resiliency through lessons on staying safe, making good decisions, fostering healthy relationships and promoting pro-social and positive behaviors. Martin Harvey introduced our speaker Mr. Mike French. A quote from Eleanor Roosevelt, “The more you help others, the more you really gain yourself.” It’s true isn’t it? When you give someone a gift, it feels good. And when you combine all these projects your club is involved in, with all those that the other 34,000 plus clubs around the world accomplish, you can see that we Rotarians really make a big difference. There’s actually a lot of feeling good going on around the world. And that’s wonderful, because by feeling good we want to keep on giving. President Dave called the meeting to order at 12:20 pm whichI’m sure he’ll get fined for. As is customary, we sang OCanada and Rotary Grace, then we enjoyed our lunch amidthe chatter of visiting and catching up with one another.
The Sergeant at Arms was EdMcLean and although he filledin at the last minute, he did hisusual amazing job. Thank youEd for making us all laugh!
President Dave welcomed backPatricia Garner. Patricia wasaway on medical leave becauseof her Dad’s illness and passing.
Attendance this week was 63which included our guests who were introduced by FranHochhausen. They were Jim Ansing from the Calgary Police,Rick Hanson, Calgary’s Chief of Police, Joe Levy, Lou Christie,Lidia Lytwya and Simone Fortier, one of our former exchangestudents. From the West Club, Ray Gosselin, and from theSouth Club Jack Thomson and Terry McDonough. Welcomeand thank you for joining Chinook Rotary.
• Garth Plunkett – he is our new Rotary Foundation guy. Hejust attended his first meeting and is looking forward to thisnew position.• Fran Hochhausen – read Michael’s report. Michael is ouroutbound student currently living in Mexico and having ablast.• Dave Saunders – he is looking for people to serve on theBoard of Directors.
– Graham Boone is stepping down as our most pundittreasurer.• Bruce Bohnet – Bruce expressed a big thank you to allthose who contributed in working at the casino. Finalproceeds yet to be determined.• Joe Hooper – November 10th, which is a Thursdayevening, all clubs will be meeting for a Remembrance DayService at the Odgen Legion. Lieutenant Governor of AlbertaDon Ethell will be the guest speaker. PLEASE NOTE: There willnot be a Rotary meeting on Tuesday that week.
Minute Men
• Norm Moro – we’re back into swing for our cribbage club,and are starting up our exercise club. For fun andcamaraderie, talk to Norm for all the details.
This celebration was conducted by Linda Colclough withspecial recognition and a gift to David Wartman for beingmissed but not forgotten. The first Tuesday of each month iswhen we celebrate still being here and still being married.Both are a great accomplishment!

Birthdays and Anniversaries
Another excellent program is MASST – Multi-Agency SchoolSupport Teams. This consists of four police/social workerteams dedicated to facilitating the early identification anddelivery of interventions to young people, aged five to fifteen,who are exhibiting high-risk behaviors and/or a risk ofvictimization. We need to identify those young people most atrisk, and there are many indicators that alert us that this childis at a greater risk for crime. Once identified, we can provideresources to address the needs, with ongoing support, to boththe youth and their families.
For street level crime and social disorder, we have the Policeand Crisis Teams (PACT). Things like car prowlings, break andenters, theft, and aggressive panhandling are generallycommitted by individuals with substance abuse addictions,who are trying to support their habit through crime. Often,these people are mentally ill and self-medicating throughalcohol or drug use. By not treating their underlyingconditions, these individuals frequently become chronic, publicnuisance offenders, regularly processed through the criminaljustice system and the hospital emergency rooms.
Calgary is now a large and growing city compared to 25 yearsago. A lot of things in Calgary have changed and we have toadapt to this change to keep Calgary safe and prosperous.

This week’s meeting was an evening event with our DistrictGovernor Mike French in attendance along with MartinHarvey, the assistant District Governor responsible for our club.
We started in the usual way singing O Canada and RotaryGrace with Betty French at the piano.
Our dinner was delectable: Prime Rib, gravy, mashed potatoes,vegetables, and for dessert, pumpkin cheesecake. Makes mehungry just writing about it!

We all really do provide “Service Above Self”. In our ownunique way we bring our individual talents and skills to worktogether around the world and, as you do, in our localcommunity. We need to share the message, not to increasemembership for the sake of increasing membership, but tohelp us do more good in the world. If we share the newsabout the great projects we do, as well as the fun andfellowship we enjoy doing them, then others will want to joinus.
Thank you to each of you for what you do to help those inneed. Thank you for helping to develop leaders in the worldand in your club. Thank you for your contribution to buildingworld peace and understanding. And finally I am here to askyou to please keep on doing it.
