STEWARDSHIP

My Gift of Treasure

Financial Update

“I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they all contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, her whole living.” (Mark 12:43-44).

Jesus gets right to the point - we are all called to give money to support the mission of the Church regardless of our circumstance. No gift is too small or insignificant! Giving money to support the mission or our local parish is a matter of faith, just life praying and participating in parish ministries. When you make a financial offering, is it from your “first fruits” or from what is “left over”? MARDI GRAS THANKS

Hopefully you have noticed a couple additions these past two weeks. We have removed a lot of the overgrown shrubbery and put in new shrubs and sod and removed several dead trees. We have also added a carillon system, bells that will remind us to pray the Angelus at 8:00am, 12:00 noon and 6:00pm as well as provide bells for other occasions. All of this is due to the generosity of those who participated in Mardi Gras last February. We still have some additional improvements to make. Thanks for making them all possible. Father Tom

GREAT CATHOLIC FAMILIES

Rituals and traditions help us all find our identity and often bring our families together. Praying before dinner, having a special birthday cake, visiting the Plaza lights during the Christmas Season are all ways that we create and share a bond in our family. Some of the best family traditions are passed on from generation to generation. My kids always ask each winter for me to make my great-grandmother’s peanut brittle recipe! It is a way that we keep her spirit alive and talk about the values that she lived throughout her life.

Try it! Talk about your favorite family traditions and try bringing back one that has fallen out of practice.

Conference Rm.

Ascension’s Divorced and Separated Support Ministry is sponsoring a group of men and women dealing with the pain and changes this causes spouses and kids. This group will strive to be supportive, loving and welcoming to all who have been through or are going through this. Moderator of the group will be a former Catholic Charities counselor who has experienced the trauma that divorce causes on a family. Please plan on joining us on Wednesday evenings at 7:00pm in the conference room (next to the office) beginning November 4, (breaks for Thanksgiving week and the holidays), as we navigate this life-changing journey. This is an eight-week course. Please go to kcascension.org click on Current Volunteer Sign-ups under Quick Links in the lower right-hand portion of the website to sign up for the class, or email Jean at [email protected].

November 18, 6:30PM St. Matthew Rm.

After each Mass over the November 14 and 15 weekend, we welcome representatives from Catholic Cemeteries of Northeast Kansas. They will be at the entrance of the Church to welcome everyone and provide information about our Catholic Cemetery system ministry. You are also invited to attend a Catholic Cemeteries Informational Seminar “Everything you NEED to know about your Catholic Cemeteries…but were afraid to ask.” Advisors will contact each family in our parish. So, if you have ever thought about informing yourself in order to learn about our Catholic traditions, and the cost free assistance of the diocesan ministry, spend a few minutes with them. Wonderful, pressure-free advice and materials are complementary. If for any reason you do not wish to be contacted by the representative, please call 913-344-7527 and your name will be removed from the list.

THE NATIONAL CATHOLIC REGISTER SUBSCRIPTION

Sign up by November 16

The National Catholic Register is the oldest Catholic newspaper in the United States. It is owned by EWTN News. Content includes news, and features from the U.S., the Vatican, and worldwide.

“In today’s world, we receive all kinds of misinformation and even disinformation about Christianity, Catholicism, and religion in general and we need a source that is going to give us direct quotations and authentic news about what is going on in the church, so we know what the Pope really said and not what the media said he said. We need to know what the synod is doing, and what the encyclicals mean, in order to be able to give the facts of our own faith. For that reason, we need the NCR which will give us the Good News along with the hard news of our world today, so we can go out to our world and give them the Good News of Jesus Christ.” Fr. Mitch Pacwa

You can now obtain this valuable resource at only one-third of the cost of an individual subscription order by participating in bulk ordering through Ascension parish. The newspaper will be delivered bi-weekly to the church, and you will pick up your copy at a designated area inside the gathering area.

If interested, please complete the information requested on the National Catholic Register envelopes on the table in the gathering area. Include your check for $22.00 made out to Church of the Ascension inside of the envelope and place it in the wooden box by November 16. The first issue should arrive by mid-December. You will be notified of its arrival. Please be assured that this is to defray the cost of the paper and for the convenience of our parishioners and not a money making project of any kind.

Contact parishioner, Joyce Grashoff at 913-271-0266 for any questions.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

So why is a car's windshield so large and the rear view mirror so small? Because our past is not as important as our future. So, look ahead and move on.

WEEKLY PRAYER

Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time A Lot of Nerve

I always thought it took a lot of nerve for Elijah to beg that poor woman for a meal. Even though, during a long drought, she has only a bit of her food to give to her son, he still asks her to make a little cake for himself. It would be easier to understand if we heard the verse before this reading begins: God tells the prophet that he has “commanded a widow…to feed you.” (1Kgs 17:9) Now the widow was not aware of this command. But she does as Elijah asked. That took even more faith than Elijah showed. She was afraid for herself and the boy. But she had enough faith to risk the last of her food to help someone else. She shows us that we are obeying God’s commands when we trust him. Most of those commands come not from a vision, but from someone’s cry for help. I wonder how many good people have passed up a chance to do God’s will because they didn’t hear directly from God what to do. When you hear that a tornado destroyed a nearby neighborhood, do you hear God asking you to help? Do you hear God’s voice when you read in the bulletin that the food pantry is running low? When a storm knocks out the power on your block, do you think God is asking you to check on the elderly widow next door? And if you do hear God calling in these examples, how do you respond? You can be like the rich people in the gospel and just give your ten percent. Or do you have the faith of the woman whose few cents were all that she had. It takes a lot of courage to trust God completely. Do you have what it takes?

If you have a relative or friend serving in the Armed Forces whom you would like for us to pray for, please add him/ her to the list located in the gathering area. God Bless our soldiers!

MINISTRY OF CARE

Opportunities abound for you and your family to do some service hours by cooking or serving together! We have miscellaneous times we need food and serving. We do funeral lunches as needed. We cook dinners for the priests and for families at Ascension who need a little help. We routinely host dinners at Shalom House the second Thursday of the month and fourth Tuesday. We serve lunch at St Mary’s Food Kitchen the second Friday of the month, and breakfast at Hope Faith the last Saturday of the month. (Includes the Saturday after Thanksgiving and Christmas!) We do Guadalupe House the second Tuesday and fourth Wednesday. We support the Interfaith Hospitality Network with breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. We do quarterly dinners at City Union Mission, both men and family shelters. We do non-perishable food drives the first weekend of every month. Kids are asked each weekend during the Offertory at Mass to bring up canned goods. We also provide a stipend for needy folks on an emergency basis to a local grocery store. Please contact Jean in the office for more information [email protected] or go to “Quick Links” on the website sign up.
