Summary 5

Introduction SCADA systems have vastly improved the ability to manage complex processes and geographically dispersed assets economically. To meet the demands of more efficient operations and maintenance and improved process performance SCADA systems are being installed in both large and small utility operations. A basic SCADA software solution needs to provide several basic functions including: communication with instrumentation and controls, alarm management, trend data management, graphic displays that provide for virtual supervision, and an ability to statistically extract data to reporting and maintenance applications.

Problem Statements A myriad of SCADA software solutions are available today. Many vendors have developed their solutions based on the Microsoft technology and operating system standards. However Microsoft is constantly updating these operating systems to address problems and security issues often requiring expensive updating of SCADA software with each service pack or operating system change. Many of the SCADA software solutions include countless customization tools needed in the private sector industrial automation marketplace. This complexity is rarely required in the water industry and a simpler solution is always less expensive to own and support. The complexity of most SCADA software mandates that the utility operations staff rely on outside vendors to configure and support the customized development. A simpler solution could be supported by utility staff with some remote assistance support. SCADA applications are powerful tools for data acquisition but sadly much of the data they collect is not properly extracted and stored or is archived in an inaccessible format.

SystemVIEW Benefits 3

Benefits The SystemVIEW SCADA software solution was developed specifically as a rapid application development system for the Utility Industry. It offers a simple and easy to use format while providing all of the required functionality. The software application has proven stable over virtually all of Microsoft’s countless operating systems and service packs during the past 16 years. The simplicity of SystemVIEW provides a truly elegant solution to water industry SCADA visualization. Two major program components provide the need functionality. A SmartServerTM is the heart of the application. It has a point editor, communication links I&C, current value display and an extract editor. The Display Client component provides a PC Paintbrush type of graphic development tools and the graphic views needed to provide visualization of the assets being monitored. This simplicity allows the system users to manage the system with access to tech support. Total cost of SCADA system ownership is minimized when using SystemVIEW. Initial software cost are lower, development cost are reduced and in some case eliminated because the development is done by the operation staff. The stable code base means that software updating will rarely be required do to operating system updates. The software manufacturer remote support services can eliminate much of the need for expense onsite services. The SmartServerTM component of SystemVIEW helps to simply the entire SCADA application. The software can automatically collect and display statistical data eliminating the need for more complex PLC data manipulation. Runtime, start counts, flow total and other statistics are easily collected, displayed and extracted to a reporting data base using the SmartServerTM

technology.

IMPLEMENTATION

SystemVIEW was originally developed for the Utility Industry. It has been implemented in a number of environs. Example 1 – City of Wausau Wastewater At the City of Wausau Wisconsin Wastewater Utility SystemVIEW is used to supervise over 20 remote pumping facilities as well as a complex wastewater treatment facility. Over 1,600 tags are monitored from the instrument and controls systems. The software provides visualization of remote sites and plant process areas, real-time and historical trending, alarm management with annunciation, and extract of data to an SQL data base for process and regulatory reporting.

Example 2 – Park Falls Water Utility The City of Park Falls Water Utility monitors and controls six remote wells, two remote water treatment plants and three elevated water storage tanks using SystemVIEW. Wastewater remote facilities are also monitored. Over 1,500 tags are monitored from the instrument and controls systems. The software provides visualization of remote sites and plant process areas, real-time and historical trending, alarm management with annunciation including a software automatic telephone messaging system, and provides extract data to an SQL data base for process and regulatory reporting. Example 3 – Marathon County Landfill Marathon County operates a sanitary landfill site with a methane collection and reuse facility. The methane has been used in heating and electric generation facilities. SystemVIEW monitors approximately 500 tags from the instrument and controls systems. The software provides visualization of remote sites and plant process areas, real-time and historical trending, alarm

management with annunciation and provides extract data to an SQL data base for process and regulatory reporting.

Example 4 – North Saint Paul Electric The City of North Saint Paul Electric Utility purchase power from a number of providers. Power is brought into the City’s distribution system through two remote Substations. The stations are continuously controlled with a PLC system and SystemVIEW is used at the operations center and other location on the City’s Intranet to visualize the electric distribution system and to respond to electrical outages. In addition to monitoring current usage the system is used to help balance usage loads as part of an Energy Management System. Alarm management and annunciation, trending and extract of data to an SQL historical data base are also provided. SUMMARY SystemVIEW is an elegantly simple solution to SCADA system visualization. It provides all of the required functionality required for utility SCADA applications. The simplicity and reliability of this solution provide for a significantly lower cost of ownership than many of the more complex solution in use today.
