Students enrolled in the “General Knowledge of Thai Soci ety” class taught by Dr. Kumutinee Jaroenrat were recently given an opportunity to experience a unique aspect of traditional Thai culture. The students received instruction in howto create their own Krathongs.Krathongs are lotus-shaped receptacles which float on the water and are part of the Thai holiday Loi Krathong which normally takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar. One condition was that they had to be made of natural materials such as banana trunks and leaves, flowers, etc. This is in following with the traditional method and it is also more environmentally friendly. In addition, they also learned about the origin and history of Loi Krathong. Moreover, Thai traditional dance was also taught in this class. Students learned that Thai Dance was originally an art performed for the royal court of old Siam. The dance troupes were formed within the court and their precision and beauty was the highlight of every performance. Today, although Thai dance is still a very important part of royal performances, the dancers are selected and trained from among the general population and the dance performances themselves are often an event for the general public. Both Thai and foreign students had a great time learning about Thai culture and helping to preserve an invaluable part of Thai culture as well.

My great experience at BUUICRabini Giuseppe

I would like to, first of all, thank the University of Trento a n d B u ra p h a U n ive r s i t y fo r h ave g ive n m e the opportunity to participate in this project.

Studying at Burapha University International College is not only an opportunity to study and learn something different, but also an occasion to experience different cultural aspects and lifestyles, both Thai and other. Everybody here was more than happy to help me all the time especially with any problem that I may have. I have met excellent and qualified instructors, efficient staff, and many students who come from different countries. All of them are very friendly and kind, a characteristic trait of all Thai people. BUUIC is well-organized and well-structured. It provides many facilities for the students looking for activities, and it also provides many sports facilities. During my stay, I have participated in some ceremonies which helped me to better understand Thai culture, ones that have been completely different traditions from my Italian culture. I met a lot of nice students who belonged to the Student Club who helped to introduce me to BUUIC’s world. Therefore, I would like to thank everyone: the Dean, instructors, staff, and the students who have made this experience truly special. I will never forget Thailand and her people.

On November 21, 2012 students from the BFA, Communication Arts and Design course visited the Bangkok Arts and Cultural Centre (BACC) and the Jim Thompson House. This visit coincided with a class on Contempo-rary Art. Beginning at the BACC students engaged with the work of a number of local artists. The outstanding work, from their perspective, was a suite of illustrative paintings by Chaiwat Najan depicting a contem-porary interpretation of Buddhist stories. They spent considerable time exploring the stories contained in the works. Then from a less formal perspective they noted the process involved and that one of the works on display was a finely detailed sketch that had been worked up to an ex-quisite painting. Whilst at the BACC, students also took in an outside display of work dedicated to raising pollution awareness.

The second site visited was the Jim Thompson House. Students were clearly surprised to find such a well preserved example of Thai tradi-tional architecture in the heart of Bangkok. Students were provided with a brief background about the site and the success that Jim Thompson had had in bringing the quality of Thai silk to the attention of the world. We then embarked on a guided tour of the house where further details were elaborated. It was noted that Thompson had studied architecture before World War II and that following his deployment during the war had fallen in love with Thai people and their culture. This led him to set up a successful business and also relocate what is a collection of teak houses to their current location on the bank of the Chao Phraya River.

As part of the tour attention was also drawn to the process of design on silk and that initial designs were lifted from those found in ceramic art. We also had an illuminating discussion based around Edward Said’s 1978 notion of Orientalism, whereby Westerners engage with Eastern cultures and then alter them to varying degrees through integration. This was illustrated in a number of ways during the tour. Firstly in that Thompson had introduced a Western style staircase into one of the buildings, and then that he had turned a number of architectural details around so that they could be viewed from the inside, for example, detailed fretwork around the windows. A further example was shown with his introduction of Chinese doors containing only two of the four seasons in their decora-tive detail.

Thompson was also an avid collector of Thai antiquities and a campaigner to stop the removal of precious artifacts from the country. As a result the houses are filled with a fine collection, ranging from large stone statues that students were able to compare with Greek statues from their History of Art and Design class, through to ornate paintings of Buddhist stories on silk, which contrasted well with the contemporary renditions viewed at the BACC. The collection is also complemented with a small display of five colour (benjarong) Thai ceramic work.

The student’s level of inquiry was heartening, asking what paint was used to paint on silk, their engagement with the silk spinning demonstrator, and addressing the question of why a foreigner would appreciate and preserve such a place. In summary this was a very successful field trip. It was rewarding to see students engage enthusiastically with art face to

They not only demonstrated a developing critical eye, but also applied much of what has been taught through the History of Art and Design course and many of the principles learned from the Fundamental Design course, in particular classes dedicated to architecture and interior design. While framed as a survey of contemporary art this field trip was highly valuable in drawing connections between the old and the new.

Hello, my name is Tsung-Hsien Yang, I am from Taiwan. It’s been my pleasure to have this chance to be an exchange student at Burapha University International College, Chonburi, Thailand. Studying in Thailand is one of my dreams, and now I am achieving this goal! It has given me the happiest and the most unforgettable memories ever in my life. In addition, I want to thank BUUIC, BUUIC is so internationalized and globalized. There are many international students in BUUIC so we can learn different cultures and values from each other. Moreover, the teachers in BUUIC are so nice to me and really take

care of me. For example, this semester I choose the courses from Dept. of Marketing and the teachers are profes-sional and full of knowledge so that they usually make us use critical thinking and form our own opinions, I like the way they teach. In the end, everything in Thailand is quite fresh and interesting for me, no matter the culture, the history, the people, the food, and the entertainment. I am so surprised about them. I like Thailand! Amazing Thailand!

It all started when we received an invitation letter saying that we have been accepted to study at Burapha University, Thailand for a semester. It was unexpected that we were able to get the recognition as the first batch of Brunei exchange students to come to Burapha University. Somehow it was an indescribable feeling we had in that moment, a mishmash of happy, excited, nervous, worried and sad feeling. At the same time we also felt a rather intense sadness since we were going to be far away from our beloved family, home, friends, university and our country.

Along the long journey to our destination to Burapha University, our mind drifted away for a moment to imagine how our learning experience will be going when we are studying in Thailand. Among the essential difference that we have to come overcome while we are here was obviously the gap between the spoken language and Thai culture which were vastly different from our own native language and country. Interaction is very important that we should try our best to facilitate the knowledge and the information conveyed by the teachers. However, our anxiety and obstacles that we have been thinking in our mind had totally flown away from our first thought. From our daily experience and what we have been going through had wiped away all of our fear. Studying in a new atmosphere and encountering new people from different cultures were some of the challenges we faced at BUUIC. However we somehow managed to create and develop a “new” version of ourselves. Honestly, we are not the type of person who talks much with people that we just know, in another words we are shy persons but after we got to BUUIC, we’re able to get over the shyness within ourselves. Surprisingly, the teachers are sporting and they were using an interesting kind of approach for the lesson. Our classmates are very active and participate in the class thus it has indirectly encouraged our ability to speak up and share our thoughts and ideas. We were able to study here comfortably as we were able to adapt with the surrounding environment. In addition, the facilities and services provided were greatly beneficial and user-friendly to foreign students, for instance there are free printing facilities being provided to all students who learn at BUUIC, a sophisticated modern-way of surfing the internet can be easily accessed from the huge “Iphone board device “ apart from the IT rooms and the library. It was beyond our expectation that our memorable journey has finally come to the end. The strength that we gained came from the help of our new tied friendship and our new roommates in Tao Thong 3. With their help we were able to cope and have a passion to get hold on with our daily routine during our 3 month stay in Burapha University, Thai-land. Our semester here went well and smoothly since the teachers are very committed and willing to lend a hand. Step by step, we learned to adapt this whole new chapter of our life. We are glad to be part of BUUIC and we are thankful for this great opportunity and experience we have gained along our semester here in BUUIC. It has been a beautiful journey. We love BUUIC!! “Brunei Exchange Student, Fall 2012”
