STAR AWARDS

Program honors small businesses for excellenceIt is a proven fact that small businesses are the

backbone of the American economy. Small businesses are also the lifeblood of the Burleson Area Chamber of Commerce.

In keeping with the Chamber’s mission to serve as an advocate for our members, to promote local business and help small businesses succeed, the Chamber’s an-nual STAR Small Business of the Year awards recog-nizes members for best business practices, innovation marketing, entrepreneurship, community volunteerism – and just the guts to be in business in today’s competi-tive world.

Now in its fourth year, the STAR Small Business of the Year Awards honor three categories of small busi-nesses each year: the Rising STAR, for companies in business three years or less; the Shooting STAR, for companies with 1-10 employees; and the Shining STAR, for companies with 11-50 employees.

Members complete an application that is then judged by a panel of local business leaders, with one winner for each category being selected. It’s an exercise in defining a company’s mission, goals, successes and obstacles.

Rachel House is the owner of Pit to Palace Cleaning, which won the 2015 Rising STAR Award.

“I think this award reflects both my accountability and my commitment to Burleson. It shows my custom-ers that I work hard to make a difference in the commu-nity and to do my very best as a business owner. Since I won the STAR Award, I have nearly tripled my business revenue. I think being a STAR Award winner shows the public you are a trustworthy company. It makes people want to do business with you.”

Woolard’s Custom Jewelers was honored with the Shooting STAR award.

“It was a very humbling experience,” said Caryl Woolard. “You don’t really think about winning awards when you are doing business. You’re just doing what you do every day, trying to serve your customers as best as you possibly can. It was really an honor to have our commitment to our customers recognized with the Chamber’s STAR Award. It was absolutely worth the time it took us to complete the award application.”

Steve Davis is a new partner at Campbell’s Auto Body in Burleson, recipient of last year’s Shining STAR award.

“I think the STAR Award is one of the things that in-creases the value of a business. When I saw that Camp-bell’s had won this award, it seemed apparent to me that Campbell’s was not only a well-known business, but also a well-run company, one with a good reputation in the community,” Davis said. “I know it definitely adds value to our company. People come in and ask ‘What’s that award sitting on the counter?’ It opens the door for us to explain to them who we are and what we stand for as we try to gain their business and trust.”

Members can find the 2015 STAR Award applications on the Chamber’s website. For information or have the application emailed to you, contact the Chamber staff.
