sisters caught in clinical depression, trapped inaddictions, overwhelmed with suffering of body, mind, soul, and spirit. And the list goes on.

The needs are endless and our resourcesboth individual and collectiveappear to be solimited: How can we help? In a way, we cant. ButGod can. Jesus, in symbolic anticipation of theEucharistic meal, called upon the Father to bless thebread of His commitment. We, too, are challenged toask God to bless our best efforts. Then, we need toget out of Gods way so that God can heal and feedour broken world through us.

Elsewhere in the Parish:Like many other parishioners, Im still basking

in the afterglow of our beautiful 2nd AnnualMulticultural Talent Show last weekend. Nearly 800parishioners and others were on hand to share the

bountiful feast/s prepared by members of theGuamanian, Filipino, Samoan, American and Hispaniccommunities. The food was just great! And therewere even hot dogs and slices of pizza availableample portions for every palate. Inside, we weretreated to nearly three hours worth of incrediblelocal talent as so many of our parishioners steppedforward to share freely of their extraordinary gifts of song and dance. Rumor has it that even a fewFranciscans were on stage! Thanks again to everyonewho worked so hard and gave so generously!

You may have noticed the table set up outsidethe Serra Center recently for food sales after theweekend Masses. Our Hispanic community isproviding tacos, pozole, beverages-- and even back-ground music!to help promote our upcomingcelebration of the Feast Day of St. Louis, King of France (aka San Luis Rey) on August 26, starting at7:30 pm. The Old Mission Church and gardens willbe the venue of this very special Procession of theSaint . The procession of a 250 year-old statue of St.Louis will be accompanied by a live banda of morethan a dozen musicians, followed by fireworks andrefreshments in the Mission gardens. Admission:FREE! Come, without paying and without cost!

    God bless,

    Fr. Chuck

    From The Pastors Desk

Dear Parish Family,Peace and all good! Were all familiar with the

saying: Theres no free lunch. Or, as we might sayhere in California, Theres no free brunch. Either

way, we are warned that everything has its price;apparently almost nothing is free in this world. Yet, incontrast, in this weeks Scriptural passagesboth inthe Old Testament (Isaiah 55:1-3) and Gospel readings(Matthew 14:13-21), we are told that the exactopposite is true. In the words of Isaiah, we arewelcomed to what is surely a sneak preview of heaven,of the messianic banquet: Come, without paying, andwithout cost, drink wine and milk. In like manner,Jesus, his heart moved with pity for the tired andhungry crowd before Him, proceeds to feed them fishand bread, with enough leftovers to fill adozen wicker baskets.

When we start to realize our need for God andour complete dependence upon Him for every goodthing in our lives, we start to become truly grateful. And an essential expression of genuine gratitude is thedesire and decision to give to others in recognition of Gods generosity to us. Give them (the crowds) somefood yourselves, Jesus tells his disciples. He not onlychallenges and instructs them (and us) as to thenecessity of service, He himself proceeds to model itthrough His own, open-handed generosity.

So, who are the hungry and thirsty among us?We dont have to think too hard at all on that point. For example, at this moment, upwards of 11 millionpeople in East Africavictims of famine and droughtface virtual starvation. The people of Norwayawealthy country by any measurement of materialprosperityare nevertheless stunned and devastatedby the senseless killings in and near Oslo. Many of them are certainly in need of comfort, compassion, and consolation.

On a less global, but no less important level,we need to ask ourselves: Who are the hungry andthirsty in our midst? How can we be instruments of Gods peace, love and generosity toward them? Weneed to think about our youth as well as our seniors;military families; single parents and families affectedby divorce; the sick, homebound, and imprisoned. Those who have lost their jobs and see only very dimprospects of new employment. Our brothers and

Stewardship of TreasureThe New MissalBy Bill Bischoff

    1) Why does the Church change the Liturgy?

In its Liturgy, the Church always attempts tofollow the norm of its holy Fathers this effort requiresnot only the preservation of what our past church Fathers

have handed on to us, but also an understanding and aprofound reflection on the Churchs entire pastthisbroader view allows us to see how the Holy Spirit endowsthe people of God with a marvelous fidelity in preservingthe deposit of faith within the diversity of the greatvariety of prayers and rites.

The liturgy must always celebrate and makepresent the Paschal Sacrifice of Christ-his Passion, Deathand Resurrection. Over time it becomes necessary tomake certain changes, such as adding prayers for newsaints and adding texts that reflect the needs that thePeople of God bring to God in prayer. This third edition of

the Roman missal makes such additions and providesa fresh translation of the Latin texts that are present inthe Missal.

    2) What exactly is changing?

The structure of the Mass (the order of theprayers, actions of the priest and so forth) remainsunchanged in the new edition of the Roman Missal. However, the translation of the prayer texts will changeto more closely reflect the original Latin texts. In somecases, new options for prayers may be available, and

some old options may not be present.3) Will the changes be noticeable?

In this third edition of the Roman Missal, almostevery prayer in the Mass those spoken by the priest andthose spoken by the people has been retranslated fromthe Latin to English. Some prayers now recited by mem-ory will need to be relearned, and the familiar language of many prayers recited by the priests will change.

In preparing the new translation, the translatorswere asked to make the English texts conform moreclosely to the Latin originals and to retain traditionaltheological vocabulary that communicates important con-cepts of the faith. The language that the faithful will hearand pray is more formal and somewhat complex than thelanguage of ordinary conversation. It conveys rich theo-logical concepts and retains biblical language and images.

    4) How are we preparing for the change?

The next Catechetical minute will provide thisinformation.

    ASSIST WITH A BIBLE

At the Easter Vigil our parish community witnessed oversixty five people receiving the sacraments necessary tocomplete their full entrance into the Church. One of thekey elements of their catechesis is the coming to know theScriptures, the Word of God, on a weekly basis. Duringweekly class and again when they gather on Sunday theycome to build a relationship with Jesus Christ that they willcarry with them for all their lives.

For this to take place the RCIA catechumens & candi-dates are given a Bible at the ceremony marking the begin-ning of their journey of faith. Our parish faith formationbudget is stretched this year trying to cover many, many, needs. Your help will be greatly appreciated if you couldhelp us with providing Bibles to our RICA groups (both Eng-lish & Spanish). A donation of $20.00, or any amount, would help us in purchasing a Bible for each RCIA catechu-men or candidate entering the Church next Easter. If youwish to give, you may make a donation at the Parish Officeor Bill Bischoffs office, or drop it into the collection in anenvelope marked BIBLES. Any help you can give will begreatly appreciated. If you have any questions, call BillBischoff at 760-547-0702.

    Dear Parish Family,

    HAPPY (FISCAL) NEW YEAR

Our parish has embarked on a new fiscal year which began on July 1, 2011 and runs through June30, 2012. Quite soon we will publish the financial report for the year just completed but I need tospeak to you now about this years budget.

Just like you at home, we are experiencing rising costs and shrinking income. Our income is shrink-ing in two areas. First we will no longer rent the Serra Center for outside non-liturgical events. Wehave a contract to honor with Canine Companions for Independence that allows for a graduation inAugust and November of 2011. There will be no more. As so many of you have asked we will have adedicated worship area. Secondly Casa De Amparo is vacating this year. Their rent has already beenreduced by about $1000.00 per month (because they have given over space already) and will com-pletely end in January or February of 2012. Total lost revenue for this fiscal year is $46,000.00. Nextyear will be in excess of $72,000.00.

Expenses such as retirement funding for employee pensions have gone up, health insurance andother benefits have increased and with an increase in your giving has come an increase in our dioce-san assessment.

While we appreciate the generosity of so many volunteers to help us reduce miscellaneous ex-penses, our income requirements continue to climb. Our weekly collection requirement is now$24,400.00. This is an increase over last year of about $3000.00 per week. As a community we canreach our new revenue benchmark. We serve in the neighborhood of 2500 families on a given

weekend. If each family can give just $2.00 more per week our burden will be light. I am confidentthat we can do this.

It has been several years since we talked openly about stewardship of treasure and what it means tobe good stewards of what God has given us. Over the next few weeks you will hear more on thistopic. We ask that you discuss it within your families, that you pray over it, and with Gods help youwill find an answer as to how you can respond. It may be through signing up for electronic fundstransfer (EFT), or using that set of envelopes that are gathering dust or just making a decision togive of your first fruits. Whatever the solution we ask only that you be open to listen to what Godmay be calling you to. In Him all is possible.

Thank you for all that you do,

    Allen B. HartmanBusiness Manager

    Querida Familia Parroquial,

    FELIZ AO NUEVO (FISCAL)

No habrn ms despus.
