To the BGF Core, with Deep Gratitude

In this report, you will see snapshots of BGF volunteers’ amazing accomplishments during 40 local weekends and 50 international trips. By the numbers alone, 2012 was a huge year.

But if you know BGF, you know the best part of who we are becomes clear on the ground, at the worksite. That’s where volunteers with the right skills join local partners to build something most needed. There are people indispensable to this discreet community miracle.

To Each Volunteer—You gave up weekends and whole weeks to work locally or abroad. Homes, schools, clinics, centers, and service facilities were created or improved with your hands.

To Each Trip Leader—You devoted more than 40 hours to trainings, just to give even more as a servant leader on building trips. You are at the core of each life-changing experience and safe trip we’ve done.

To Each Volunteer Project Manager, Architect and Engineer—You commit to what becomes a second job, donating your professional skills to ensure each build process is complete, fully functional, enduring, and beautiful.

To Each Staff Person—You support hundreds of volunteers, safely bringing together skills and materials together at the right time and place.

To Each Donor—Your ongoing support has been instrumental in making 2012 BGF’s most successful year to date. Through construction, you’ve helped uplift entire communities.

For what each of you offers, we are all deeply grateful. It’s always an honor to serve with you.

—Kelly Eplee, Executive Director

President’s Letter

At Building Goodness Foundation, we know our structures help people. But BGF’s impact goes well beyond the perfunctory function of providing shel-ter. Built spaces are where people come together to build their lives—learning, healing, working, worship-ping, and raising our children. There is something profound in making a building. Like sharing a meal, it is an intimate human moment, combining what physically nurtures with what enriches our souls.

This past year, we became even better at building structures and community. 2012 marked the third year of our earthquake recovery in Haiti, the second year of our expansion of local projects to a year-round program, and the f irst year of a new strategic plan. Each earthquake-recovery project to which we committed in Haiti is completed or well underway. We contributed more locally than any previous year. We’re exploring new frontiers with projects in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Guatemala.

Our growth has come with the requisite pangs, but we emerge from our current spurt with pride. Volunteers, staff, partners, directors, and donors depend on, and inf luence, one another as we build on the skills offered by each. The culminating effect is a bountiful landscape of skill, passion, innovation and creativity —all coming to bear on the places we make.

As Margaret Mead reminds us, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”

Sincerely, and with much appreciation,

—Mike Stoneking, Board President

In 2012, BGF sent 145 volunteers abroad on f ifty work trips.

Sixty-three percent of volunteers

were construction professionals.

“I learned carpentry with BGF —anything to do with that house over there, I’ve learned from BGF. Jack Stoner himself would help me, almost like he was holding my hand. He taught me to put up roofing, how to put things straight and square, what was good, what wasn’t good. I learned so, so much with BGF.”

—Crew leader Réné Décime, who has worked with BGF for ten years
