Building Goodness Foundation confronts risk every day. It’s part of everything we’ve done over the past 15 years. How could we help those most in need, with limited resources, in the most impoverished parts of our community and the world, without facing risk? We couldn’t.

In our international trip leader training, we learn to assess risk. What decision do we make if the likelihood is small, but if something should go awry, the results would be awful? Or, what should we do if the risk might very well occur, yet we could tolerate the outcome? This brand of analysis is strong. It teaches us to keep our eyes open to prevent problems.

But what if the measure of success was not about weighing negative outcomes against risk, but about calculating risk versus reward? It’s in answering this question that BGF truly shines. Every time a volunteer goes abroad, or takes off from work to help on a local project, they experience jeopardy. What if my boss won’t give me the vacation time? What if I get hurt on the job? What if it costs too much? Every time we commit to a project partner still seeking funding, we face a threat. What if we can’t raise all the money? What if it takes too long? Each time we choose to build, we weigh probability. Can we get all the materials? Will we get them in time? Can we make design changes and still achieve our goals?

With almost every project we face these questions. And every time we find a way to deliver. We find that way because we are motivated by the beautiful ends. And it’s not because the ends justifies the risk. It’s because the risk is how we get there.

This is the stuff of making a difference.

—Mike StonekingBoard President (2011-2013) Life-long volunteer

COMMUNITY CENTERS

INVIGORATE THE RURAL HAITIAN ECONOMY

The CODEP Depot is a hub for local Haitian agribusiness, hosting coffee production, business development training, and meetings for community leaders. The depot also doubles as a marketplace for local produce, including mangoes and avocadoes.

PROVIDEA SPACE FOR COMMUNITY GATHERINGS

BGF volunteers pitched in to re-roof the Rockfish Valley Community Center, which serves as a social, educational, and cultural hub for this central Virginia community.

Haitian families involved in CODEP’s programs participate in reforestation, health, and agriculture initiatives in exchange for wages and other incentives. In 2013, BGF volunteers designed and supervised the construction of St. Pierre Catholic Church for a CODEP-affiliated community, replacing a church claimed by the 2010 earthquake. Local residents volunteered countless hours to construct their new church.

PRESERVE A NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE

One of our longest-standing Virginia partners, the Mattaponi Reservation is home to members of the Mattaponi tribe, descendants of Virginia’s First People. BGF volunteers helped transform a pottery room into a classroom.

HOST COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND WORSHIP SERVICES

HEALTH

TREAT RURAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS WITH SANITARY MEDICAL CARE

Partnering with Bridges to Community, BGF volunteers engineered a waste disposal system and reliable well at a hospital in Siuna, Nicaragua.

ADVOCATE FOR ABUSED AND NEGLECTED CHILDREN IN THE PIEDMONT AREA

Piedmont CASA connects abused and neglected children to court-appointed special advocates, who speak for the children’s best interests. BGF volunteers expanded an a room in CASA’s office, enabling the organization to better fulfill its important mission.

SOURCE MATERIALS LOCALLY

On international trips, our skilled builders transfer their expertise, working alongside local community members. Now, a major housing program is run by a paid Haitian crew.

Whenever possible, BGF invests in local economies by purchasing building materials in-country.

HOUSING

EMPOWER OUR ELDERLY AND LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORS TO MAINTAIN THEIR HOMES

Twice a year, during Building Goodness in April and Building Goodness in Autumn, BGF’s skilled construction volunteers team up with students from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business. In 2013, over 200 volunteers rehabilitated seven homes and two nonprofits.

MOTIVATEPARTICIPATION IN RECYCLING, REFORESTATION, AND COMMUNITY HEALTH INITIATIVES

Casa Alma, a Catholic Worker House and small urban farm in Hogwaller, provides safe, stable housing to families as they save up for places of their own. BGF volunteers replaced the roof on one of Casa Alma’s guest homes.

Haitian families participate in our partner organizations’ recycling, reforestation, and community health initiatives to earn homes from BGF.In 2013, BGF’s Haitian crew and volunteers constructed 150 homes for families participating in our partner organizations’ programs.

From a distance, it may be hard to distinguish Building Goodness Foundation worksites from most other construction sites. You find construction company owners, architects, master carpenters, a range of craftspeople and many who are not pros, but do whatever it takes. They are all obviously “good guys and gals,” or they wouldn’t be volunteering. Our volunteers want to make a difference, and rehabilitating a community center or home is a meaningful way to spend a weekend.

BGF volunteers, however, are part of a bigger picture. Last month, Dr. Garrick Louis, an international development specialist and engineer from UVa, spoke to our volunteers about the United Nations’ Millenium Development Goals. The goals outline eight priority areas to uplift humanity. Dr. Louis complimented us, since, through our partners locally and abroad, BGF volunteers have contributed to all key areas: Poverty alleviation, primary education, women’s health, and environmental recovery. In addition to contributing to the UN’s goals, we’ve also housed hundreds of families. We’ve always known our service is vital, but it was nice to hear it officially.

What is the difference BGF volunteers make on a local and global scale? Our core values have been applied on projects for 15 years. This Community Report presents 2013’s unique projects, the magnitude of volunteer hours, and staggering value our volunteers offer our own and other communities.

But back to the group mentioned earlier. They are giving their best. Come out to a site and lend a hand. But don’t be surprised. We are more than what we seem.
