What are Core Competencies?(in the business world)



1) a competence can be applied widely to provide access to various markets; 2) a competence “should make a significant contribution to the perceived customer benefits of the end product”; and 3) a competence “should be difficult for competitors to imitate” (Prahalad and Hamel 1990, 83-84).








What are Core Competencies?(at the individual level)

Laura Vanderkam argues that people have core competencies, just like businesses do.


Vanderkam’s two questions:

1. What do I do best, that other people cannot do nearly as well?2.What do I spend time on that other people could do, or could do better? (Vanderkam 2010, Chapter 2, Location 773)
