HSC e-Locums
HSC e-Locums (http://www.medicallocums.hscni.net/) is a web based solution which was designed and developed by the software development team at the HSC Leadership Centre. The web solution is used by all Trusts in Northern Ireland to advertise medical locum adhoc shifts for short term cover. All Trusts are committed to using this service as a ‘first port of call’ to fill their medical lo-cum requirements. All locums registered on this system have their ‘first pick’ of available locum work across the province, and receive competitive rates of pay for this work. HSC e-Locums gives doctors an unrivalled range of opportunities in the area, specialism and level that best suits their skills and experience. The 5 HSC Trusts have greatly benefited from the development of the e-Locum system. They now have a system that has streamlined their processes around filling medical lo-cum shifts, helped to standardise the rates paid and improved the regulation of locum qualifications and experience. One of the goals of the e-Locum system was that it could be accessed by doctors at any time regardless of their location. Therefore, the system had to be designed and devel-oped using web based technologies. The system was specifically developed using a web based framework called ASP.Net MVC along with Microsoft’s Entity Framework and SQL Server Database for data persistence and data storage respectively. Another form of technology that helped to ensure the success of the e-Locum system was the integration and usage of SMS to deliver text messages to doctors. These text messages, sent automatically from the system, are delivered to doctors informing them of available shifts. The software is the first of its kind to be designed and developed within the HSC in Northern Ireland.
