The 2010 U.S. President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Nominee

Launched in 2006, the Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award are chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.

For the fifth year in a row Chandler-Gilbert Community College has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. CGCC engaged more than 2,500 students and staff in more than 67,000 hours of service during the 2009-10 academic year. In addition to students participating in academic service learning related to their curricula, including biology, communications, business, education, nutrition, sociology, psychology, nursing, history, mathematics, English and humanities, many clubs and organizations such as Phi Theta Kappa, the HEAT Club (the Hands-On Environmental Action Team), and HELP (Hands Enriching Life Program) also devoted hundreds of hours to their community engaged in various fund-raising and service projects.

Congratulations to the entire service-learning team, Alison Whiting, Tiffany Kimble, Vanessa Sandoval, Patrick Williams, Jennifer Spring, Mike Greene, KT Campbell, and Jessie Leach, and to all of the faculty and staff who participate in CGCC’s amazing service-learning program.

The Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility

The Chandler Chamber of Commerce, its When Work Works partners in Arizona, the When Work Works national partners--Families and Work Institute, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute for a Competitive Workforce and the Twiga Foundation--awarded Chandler-Gilbert Community College a 2010 Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. This prestigious award recognizes employers that are successfully using workplace flexibility to meet both employer and employee goals. As a winner, Chandler-Gilbert Community College ranks in the top 20%, or the 80th percentile, of employers nationally in terms of flexible work programs, policies and culture. As reflected in our mission, values and strategic goals, CGCC remains focused on employee empowerment, personal and professional growth, community involvement, and a whole life agenda.

National Council of Marketing and Public Relations Awards

Medallion Awards

Marketing & Public Relations Department received three Gold Medallion Awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations for 2009-2010. Marketing & PR received the three Medallions for the “Be the Connection” Fundraising Campaign; the CGCC Recruitment Folder; and the Outdoor Banners located at both the Pecos and Williams campuses. The department also received a Paragon Award for the “Be the Connection” Fundraising. Campaign Judges included representatives from business and industry such as the Los Angeles Dodgers and Sketchers Corporation, as well as students.

Marketing & PR has received a total of 42 Medallion Awards in the past 11 years and 2 Paragon Awards in the past 3 years.

The National Council of Marketing and Public Relations Regional Medallion Awards are designed to recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community, junior, and technical colleges. The prestigious National Paragon Awards recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community and technical colleges. Congratulations to Trish Niemann, Carol Crane, and Magdalena Soto.

CGCC Innovation of the Year

Teacher Education + Service Learning + On-Line = Success

The CGCC Teacher Education Program has service learning as a core component of the curriculum of every course; therefore, each semester, 375-425 students are individually placed in local classrooms for 20-30 hours of service. In 2009, the service learning team, in partnership with TSS and Teacher Education faculty, implemented a web-based system for placing and monitoring students’ service in the schools. This system has benefited students by placing them more quickly, which directly impacts their academic achievement. The system has also earned praise from the teachers and administrators in local districts who have increased confidence in the CGCC systems for fingerprint management, placement, and monitoring of CGCC students in their schools. Valley of the Sun United Way Campaign

This year’s CGCC Valley of the Sun United Way Campaign, “Results that Matter,” raised contributions totaling $20,933. United Way supports many health and human services programs and nonprofits that provide vital support to children, teens, seniors, individuals, and families in crisis in our communities. Thanks to all employees who gave. Your gifts make the difference in the lives of so many throughout the Valley.

MCCCD Diversity Advisory Council Award for Excellence

Bound To El Norte with Don Bartletti: Central American Stowaways on Mexican Freight Trains:

On November 8, 2010, Los Angeles Times photojournalist Don Bartletti shared images and descriptions of his Pulitzer Prize winning photo essay about Central Americans attempting a harrowing and illegal 1500-mile journey through the length of Mexico on the tops of freight trains. Among these migrants are children, some as young as 12, who travel alone. Most are trying to reunify with parents, usually mothers, who left them behind years ago to work in the United States. For children, the dream of reunification becomes the quest for the Holy Grail. Bartletti’s work illustrates how success comes to the brave and the lucky. Congratulations to Chris Schnick for his work leading such powerful co-curricular programing.

Service-Learning Faculty AwardChristopher Reider

Chris Reider became immediately and deeply invested in service-learning when he came to Chandler-Gilbert Community College. He began with a strong presence at our one-day event, Into the Streets, by requiring all of his English students to attend and reflect on their learning. Chris also teaches the English 101 and English 102 sections for our education majors and his curriculum is geared toward future teachers. As an example of the class service-learning projects in that curriculum, Chris and his students created interactive exhibits for the Gilbert Historical Museum and hosted Gilbert Elementary School students at the Museum. Currently, Chris still incorporates Into the Streets in his curriculum while also participating in the Chandler Writes! program where his students mentor students at San Marcos Elementary School in writing projects. The powerful combination of community agency, school and community college that Chris actively incorporates in his classes creates meaningful and fun experiences for the students and our community.

Congratulations to Teacher Education faculty Sharon Fagan, who was honored with the Women’s Leadership Group 2011 “Woman of Distinction” Distinguished Achievement Award, which was presented to her at the group’s 13th Annual Women’s Leadership Luncheon in April. “Sharon Fagan is a dedicated, passionate teacher, who consistently devotes her time, expertise, and creativity to initiatives which support student success. Her service to the college extends beyond the classroom, as she serves as mentor to both students and fellow employees. Bill Crawford, Vice President for Student Affairs, continues to serve a two-year term as President of the Western Region Council on Black American Affairs (WRCBAA), a regional body of the National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA), which is an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). Additionally, Bill is president elect of NCBAA and will transition to the presidency in July 2012.

Carol Edwards serves on the Program Committee for the 2011 Annual Meeting and Exposition of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) in Indianapolis. She is also the volunteer executive secretary of TODOS: Mathematics for ALL, a national affiliate of the NCTM. Carol was awarded the prestigious 2011 TODOS Iris M. Carl Leadership and Equity Award on April 13, 2011 during the NCTM Conference in Indianapolis.

International Double Reed Society 2011 Conference

Joseph Kluesener

Joseph Kluesener, adjunct faculty at CGCC and PVCC, has been invited to perform for the world’s bassoonists and oboists at the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) 2011 Conference hosted at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ on May 31-June 4. Kluesener is the founder and director of the Paradise Winds, a “mutating” (changing instrumentation) chamber wind ensemble performing throughout Greater Phoenix and now developing a global presence.

Laura Matyas

Laura Matyas is the Director of the Early Outreach Programs at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, where she has worked for 21 years. Laura is a first generation college graduate from a Hispanic family of ten children. She attended college while working full time and raising a family. Laura started Achieving a College Education (ACE Plus), in support of first generation and at-risk high school students, in 2002 with 13 students and last year in 2010 the program graduated one hundred students headed for college. Over the last nine years, students from Chandler as well as from other East Valley high schools have attended the ACE PLUS program. She also developed an ACE Parents program and other special events to support the community learning about college access and opportunities. Laura has a passion for students and their families. She works tirelessly to support the successful transition of students moving from high school to college by working closely with high school personnel, college faculty and staff, and community agencies to help individuals find their way and the resources they need to succeed in college.

National Science Foundation Grant for Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Program (S-STEM)

Bassam Matar, Melinda Rudibaugh, Jenny Pauls, Dr. Scott Adamson, and Nanci Regehr continue to promote STEM education at CGCC by administering the National Science Foundation Grant for Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Program (S-STEM) in the amount of $573,064 to be distributed to CGCC students over four years. This is the third year of awards. The overarching goal of the CGCC High-Tech Transfer Program Scholars Project is to provide specialized educational opportunities and services for academically talented, full-time financial-aid eligible students with majors or program interests pursuing degrees in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Gilbert Mayor’s Award for Lifetime Service to the Arts

Marc Denton

Marc Denton received the first ever Gilbert Mayor’s Lifetime Service Award at the Mayor’s Breakfast with the Arts in October, 2010. Marc was recognized for his many years of providing performing arts education in the East Valley. Marc began CGCC’s music program with no specialized choir rooms, no band equipment, no music colleagues, and the program he has built over the last 20 years is exemplary. CGCC now has hundreds of students enrolled in a variety of choral and instrumental music programs and musical theater productions. Since 1991, Marc has been integral in supporting the production of concerts, musical theater, high school music festivals, and many other special events held in CGCC’s beautiful Performing Arts Center and at locations throughout the community. Marc has taken groups of students to perform at hospitals, shelters, senior and assisted living facilities, and churches throughout the East Valley. He has served as a board member of the Gilbert Fine Arts Association, musical director for 10 Gilbert Fine Arts Association musical productions, and directed over 100 music theater productions in the East Valley since 1987 for

Mesa Musical Theater, Southwest Shakespeare, Mesa Community College and CGCC Performing Arts. Marc has adjudicated fine arts competitions in the East Valley, was the founding Director of East Valley Children’s Chorus, and the founding Director of Phoenix Children’s Chorus. Marc has received numerous awards and honors and served in variety of professional leadership roles. As an acclaimed singer, Marc has performed with the ASU Lyric Opera, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Phoenix Symphony, the Utah Symphony, and the ASU and U of A Symphony Orchestras.

Keystone AwardsThe intent of the “keystone” is to serve as a reminder that each of us is the key to fulfilling our college’s mission. Gilbert Lund Award for Service to the Arts in the Community

The CGCC Visual and Performing Arts faculty and staff received the Lund Award for Service to the Arts in the Community at the Gilbert Mayor’s Breakfast with the Arts in October, 2010. Chandler-Gilbert Community College has been a center for community cultural activity since the opening of the Pecos Campus in 1987. As the CGCC arts program grew, it quickly became known for its quality and variety of performing and visual arts programs and events. Because of CGCC’s dedication to the Arts over the last 20 years, there now are many different opportunities for hundreds of students and community members to be involved in performance groups and the visual arts at CGCC each year.

Congratulations to the CGCC Visual and Performing Arts Faculty and Staff: Ted Wolter, Kelly Kirkpatrick, Kate O’Mara, Gordon Jesse, Sally Jesse, Marc Denton, Randy Wright, Theodore Goddard, Tom Gilseth, Iris Ishikawa, Dahlia Gonzales, and dozens of adjunct faculty members.

Gilbert Community Excellence Awards

Math faculty Melinda Rudibaugh and Coordinator of CGCC’s Law Enforcement Training Academy Jon Terpay were honored in November 2010, at the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Community Excellence Awards.

Melinda Rudibaugh, Mathematics Faculty

Melinda Rudibaugh was recognized as “CGCC Educator of the Year.” An excerpt from her nomination reads: “She connects on a very individual level with each and every student no matter their skill level. She incorporates active learning, technology, classroom assessment and service learning into all of her classes to enrich and advance her students’ experiences. She is a devoted community volunteer herself, serving as a United Way Campaign leader and a passionate and devoted animal rescue volunteer.”

Jon Terpay, Law Enforcement Training Academy Director

Jon Terpay was recognized as “CGCC Staff Member of the Year.” An excerpt from his nomination reads: “There is nothing he asks his students to do that he won’t do with them. If they run, he runs. If he asks them to serve in their community, he is right beside them. He believes in the importance of serving all constituents in the community and knowing the complexity of needs that exist.”

Doug Bullock

Doug Bullock began his career in Maricopa in 1981 as Coordinator of Veterans Services and Financial Aid Assistant at Phoenix College. In 1984, he moved to Mesa Community College as a Financial Aid Assistant, then came to CGCC as the Director of Financial Aid in 1989, and later the Associate Dean of Enrollment Services. From 1971-1978, Doug served as an active duty Air Force Intelligence Officer, followed by 17 years of service in the Air Force Reserve. Doug survived 6 college Presidents, 8 supervisors, an appendicitis attack, and a tumor (not necessarily in that order).

Sherry Peabody Sherry Peabody began employment in 1997 at Rio Salado College as the Library Coordinator and later became the Supervisor of Library Information Access Services. She transferred to Mesa Community College in Fall, 2000 as a Librarian and later joined CGCC in 2001, where she served as a librarian until she retired in February, 2011.

Jeff Mason

Jeff Mason was hired part-time in 1996 as CGCC’s first athletic coordinator and asked to work with the community to determine which sports to include in the athletics program, to locate and prepare facilities and programs, and to hire coaches to recruit and field teams. In fall of 1998, with no fields or facilities on the Pecos campus, CGCC began its athletics programs with six teams in four sports using a gymnasium built in the 1940’s at the Williams Campus and rented community fields for soccer and softball. Building athletics facilities and programs for student-athletes in six sports and nine teams at CGCC has been a personal and professional high in a 37-year career in education in the Southeast Valley.

Marybeth and Jeff Mason

Marybeth and Jeff are going to try to recapture their youth, join Silver Sneakers, and master every song in the Wiggles repertoire, so their granddaughter, Mason Jane, continues to think they are the coolest grandparents ever.

Phoenix College Alumni Hall of Fame

Lois Bartholomew

Lois Bartholomew, retired CGCC Vice President of Student Affairs, was inducted into the Phoenix College Alumni Hall of Fame for 2010. Lois began her college career at Phoenix College and has been active in their Alumni Association for many years. The Hall of Fame membership begins with a nomination process, and a rigorous screening of nominees.

Yvette Strickling

A dedicated and multi-talented professional, Yvette Strickling has worked for Chandler-Gilbert Community College for 15 years. She is involved in a number of campus and student-related activities each year, including serving as a mentor to CGCC students throughout the academic year; advisor to the Black Student Union (BSU), helping students prepare for campus jobs and jobs within the club and assisting in helping students sponsor campus events; participating in CGCC’s BSU and Student Life and Leadership Panel Discussion in February 2007; serving as the CGCC Valley of the Sun United Way Chair 2006 and as an Into the Streets site leader. Over those years she has also been responsible for coordinating numerous special events at CGCC for both student organizations, staff, and our communities, including recognition and awards celebrations, fund raisers, retirements, WLG recognitions, and many other special events.

CGCC Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Award

Josh Gottry

When Josh Gottry, Music Faculty began his adjunct tenure at CGCC, he quickly established a strong percussion-based performance program, with the Percussion and Latin Percussion Ensembles as the core groups. He has gone out into the high schools and junior high schools every year to recruit students to play in these ensembles. Josh also has made a significant contribution to our growing music theory program for music majors. He standardized the curriculum, and has played a leading role in developing continuity in instruction and assessment. Finally, Josh is a recognized composer and has won statewide and national recognitions for his compositions.

Other outstanding adjuncts nominated for this award: Rachna Nath (Biology), Ashley Jacobson (Business), Deborah Matayabas (English), Debi Kuznicki (Nursing) and Sue Steele (Math).

25 Years of Service

Ron L. West

Ron West began his twenty-five year career in Maricopa in 1985 as a College Security Officer at Mesa Community College. Ron moved to CGCC in 1998 as a College Safety Officer.

30 Years of Service

Victor Navarro

Victor arrived at CGCC in 1987 as a management intern from the District ITS department to assist with establishing the technology infrastructure for the college. Early projects consisted of networking phone systems across Maricopa and establishing the college local area network. This was prior to wide-spread use of personal computers, and Victor was involved in a district-wide initiative for providing Apple and IBM PC’s for faculty and staff. Victor was named Coordinator of Computer Services in 1989 and was responsible for the first open computer lab on campus. Since then he has served in a variety of technical leadership positions and is currently a member of the Administrative Leadership as the Director of Information Technology.

Retirements

Mary Kaye Allen

In fall 1988, Mary Kaye Allen began attending classes at Chandler-Gilbert Community College. In January 1989, she began her employee career at CGCC as a student worker in the Computer Lab. In 1989, she was board approved as one of the two first Administrative Secretaries to the Division Chairs. Mary Kaye was tapped by then President Arnette Ward to form an Advisory Council for planning and development of the proposed Sun Lakes Education Center. As Director, she opened the Sun Lakes Center in 1997. She served as a member of the Graduation Committee, a member of the 2002 Presidential Search Committee, in various officer positions in CGCC MAT, and as a member of the President’s Executive Committee, in addition other College committees. At the District level, she has served on the MAT Executive Council, as a member of the Continuing Education Council, and provided district-wide leadership for Maricopa CARES.

Linda Shaw came to Mesa Community College in 1990 as a Financial Aid Technician. Within several years, she was promoted to Assistant Director of the Financial Aid Office. In 2001, Linda decided to pursue a career change and was hired as the Supervisor of Admissions & Recruitment at MCC. Two weeks prior to the implementation of the student information system in February 2008, Linda joined CGCC as the Director of Admissions, Registration & Records. She has served as chair of the District Admissions & Records Council and serves on the CGCC Admissions & Standards Committee. Linda has a total of 30 years of experience working in higher education at four post-secondary institutions.

Marybeth Mason

Marybeth Mason taught English and Humanities at CGCC for 18 years before becoming the Dean of Community Affairs in 2008. She has also served as the Director of the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI), CGCC’s Faculty Development Coordinator, the Interim Dean of Instruction, and the Interim Dean of Business and Industry. She provided leadership for service learning, learning communities, and iStartSmart, as well as the opening of buildings and programs at the Williams Campus.

Margie Mesanko

Margie Mesanko was first hired as Administrative Secretary for Administrative Services in 1990 at South Mountain Community College. Four years later she was hired to work in Employee Relations at the District office, working first with database management and human resources reports, then with the leaves of absence and probationary evaluations for all of the colleges. After two years, she moved into a senior HR position in Employment. In spring 1998, she moved to CGCC to become the Administrative Assistant for the Dean of Administrative Services. She was excited to return to working at a college. As the college grew, her position and role grew to the point of splitting the Administrative Assistant and the Human Resources duties into two positions, so she moved into the HR function full-time. She was promoted to become the Manager of College Employee Services in 2002.

John Schroeder

John Schroeder was hired in August, 1990 as an Aviation Maintenance Faculty at CGCC. He served as a representative on Faculty Meet & Confer in 1992, CGCC Faculty Association President-elect in 1994, and CGCC Faculty Association President in 1995. In addition, he served two years during that period as the campus Instructional Design Facilitator. John served on loan to the District for 18 months as the Apollo Project Manager before being selected as the Director of Strategic Information Technology at the District Office in November of 1996. John served in ITS at the District Office until November of 2003 when he returned to CGCC to serve as the Director (and later Provost) of the Williams Campus where he continues to serve.

20 Years of Service

Brent T. Bartel

In an attempt to finish up two courses required for his bachelor’s degree, Brent Bartel wandered into a little college, miles from anywhere, boasting two little Lego-like buildings called Chandler-Gilbert Community College. Inquiring about available jobs on campus he was referred to the fledgling College Safety Department. A week later he was hired as a student College Safety Officer and thus began what has been a nearly 22 year association with the college. Through it all Brent has served as a Non-Certified College Safety Officer, Certified College Safety Officer, Acting Director of College Safety and Lead Certified Officer for the Williams Campus. In the midst of it all he enjoyed two, six month temporary assignments with the Employee and Organizational Learning Team (EOLT), and has served as CGCC adjunct faculty. For nearly 14 years Brent has facilitated a variety of curricula for EOLT, including FranklinCovey programs, Workplace Violence Prevention, CPR/AED and others. Over the years Brent has served on a variety of college committees and for the last several years has served as the Coordinator for the college’s Employee Development Team.

Gabe Garcia

Gabe Garcia was hired as part-time Receiving Clerk in 1989 at Scottsdale Community College. In 1990 he was hired as a full-time Receiving Clerk. Five years later he was promoted as a Property/Receiving Technician at Scottsdale Community College. When the same position opened up at CGCC in 2001, he transferred to CGCC. In 2004 he was promoted to Property Control Technician and in 2009 he advanced to Coordinator Property Control.

Diana M. Little

Diana Little was first hired as a temporary worker at Mesa Community College in 1983 in Fiscal Services. In 1988 she was “loaned” to CGCC to work on a special project in the Library for a few months, then returned to Mesa to work as both a Library Tech and Theater Tech. In 1990, she returned to CGCC as a part-time board approved employee in the Library. During this time she also worked a temporary position at Mesa in Human Resources. In 1995, she attained full-time status at CGCC as an Administrative Secretary in the Math/Science Division. In 1997 she moved to an Office Coordinator position, directing the campus mailroom. In 2004, she transitioned to Office Coordinator for Risk and Resources. During her time as a board approved employee, Diana has also served several years as PSA Secretary.

Kathy Hunter

Kathy Hunter was first hired in the District as a Basketball Coach/Athletic Specialist at SMCC in 1986. She then worked in Advisement at MCC from 1990-1995. She came to CGCC as a BPC/CIS faculty in 1995. She taught PC and Macintosh classes, as well as headed up the short-term, online computer classes, and the Information Technology Institute (ITI). Kathy created new classes, certificates, and associate degree programs to prepare students for Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), Microsoft Certified Soution Provider (MCSP, Cisco, and Oracle cerification examinations. Kathy moved from Computing Studies Faculty to Business Faculty Fall 2008. Kathy received the MCCCD Employee of the Year Award in 1998. She was the first CGCC recipient of the Woman of Distinction Award in 1998.

David E. Rodriquez

David Rodriguez was groomed at an early age to become an audio visual technician. By the time he started at CGCC in 1990, he was ready to hit the ground running. Just look at him now.
