Welcome to the programme for this, the second Bryanston BusinessConference. Last year’s event was enjoyable and interesting in equalmeasure, and undoubtedly inspired some of our A3 students to think aboutbecoming employers themselves one day.

The list of speakers for this year is just as impressive and as varied as lastyear’s; I’m so grateful to all of them for saying, ‘Yes’!

Once again, I would like to acknowledge that the conference takes placebecause of the generosity of David Morris (H ’43), who retains a closeinterest in business education and who hopes that all of you learn lastinglessons from today.

Mark ChristieHead of Economics & Business

DAVID MORRIS (H ‘43)

Bryanston has always managed(sometimes only just!) to fundnew developments; this willcontinue, but financing bursariesmay become harder and moreimportant. Being a relativelyyoung school it has not got asustainable investment fund and Ihope the Bryanston BusinessConference will eventually helpto achieve this.

The school is known for its uniqueeducation, led by Sarah Thomas, for itsart, music, drama and sport, and now forbusiness under Mark Christie, Head ofEconomics.

Through the conference, Bryanston istaking a lead and business organisationsare supporting it. Pupils and businesspeople will be involved together.Hopefully, as pupils succeed in business, they will complete the virtuous circle andcontribute to the endowment fund that Ihave set up in order to finance thisannual conference, or the vitallyimportant Bursaries Fund. I hope thatthe Bryanston Business Conference willalso help the school’s youngentrepreneurs fulfil their dreams at thisimportant stage in their careers.

For myself, I benefited from learningeconomics at Bryanston and also ‘how to

learn’, both of which helped me in mycareer. In January 1943, I volunteered, trained and became a Spitfire pilot in theFleet Air Arm, a useless occupation whenI was demobbed four years later. I then had to find an interesting career andtrained to be a chartered surveyor. I joined Allsop and later became seniorpartner for 30 years.

Since retiring 25 years ago, I have had anumber of paid and voluntary jobs butthroughout I have been an investor andinterested in business.

In this capacity, I have helped to fundbursaries for parents caught out by thefinancial collapse and also the future ofbusiness at Bryanston.
