As we still continue to celebrate the Christmas season with joy and hope, and welcome a new year filled with God’s grace and many blessings , we thought to write few thank you words to you dear faithful people of St. Lucy. Msgr. Frederick Becker, Fr. Urbano Rodrigues and I would like to thank all of you for your beautiful cards and thoughtful gifts that you gave us for Christmas. It will take us a long time to eat all the goodies that you gave us, and this is a sign that you love us. We are grateful and thankful for being in your life and serving you in this beautiful parish.

We specifically wish to thank the ushers, the Extraordinary Ministries of the Eucharist, the lectors, the English and Spanish choirs, under the directions of Florence Bocarius, Madelena Cruz, and Victor Vargas, the leader of song, Albina Zajmi, the sacristans, the altar servers, and many humble volunteers who made the Christmas celebration so beautiful. We want to especially thank Lisa Jimenez for producing our beautiful Parish Christmas Concert last week which truly brought our parish into the spirit of this beautiful season.

Finally we thank you for being such beautiful people. During this time with you we have seen so much goodness among you and true Christian spirit that humbles us to think that we are at your service. You are truly a pleasure to serve, and we humbly ask you to keep us in your prayers, that we may always serve you faithfully in the Lord Jesus. SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GOD The solemnity of the Mother of God, which now coincides with the octave-day of Christmas and the beginning of the new year, was probably assigned this day because of the influence of the Byzantine Church, which celebrates the synapsis of the most holy Theotokos on December 26. This is in accordance with the Eastern practice of honoring secondary persons on the day after the feast of the principal personage (in this case, the birth of Christ). The Coptic Church celebrates this feast on January 16, but in the West, as early as the 5th century, the feast was celebrated on the Sunday before Christmas, although in France it was celebrated on January 18 and in Spain on December 18. Even before Pope Sergius introduced four Marian feasts in the 7th century (the Birth of Mary, the Annunciation, the Purification and the Assumption), the octave day of Christmas was celebrated in Rome in honor of the Maternity of Mary. Later, in the 13th and 14th centuries, the feast of the Circumcision was added, although it had been introduced into Spain and France at the end of the 6th century and was later included in the Missal of Pope St. Pius V. The recent liturgical reform has restored the original Roman practice, which replaced the pagan feast of the New Year, dedicated to the god Janus, with this feast honoring the Mother of God. A popular movement began in Portugal in the 18th century for a feast honoring Mary’s maternity, and in 1914 the date of the feast was fixed at October

11. It was extended to the entire Latin Church in 1931, the fifteenth centenary of the Council of Ephesus. The restoration of the feast to January 1, which falls in the Christmas season and has an ecumenical significance, coincides with other anniversaries; for example, the octave-day of Christmas, the circumcision of the Infant Jesus (assigned to the first Sunday of January); the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus (which dates back to 1721); and the day for peace, introduced by Pope Paul VI. In the encyclical Marialis Cultus (1974) Pope Paul VI states: “This celebration, assigned to January 1 in conformity with the ancient liturgy of the city of Rome, is meant to commemorate the part played by Mary in this mystery of salvation. It is meant also to exalt the singular dignity which this mystery brings to the ‘holy Mother… through whom we were found worthy… to receive the Author of life.’ It is likewise a fitting occasion for renewed adoration of the newborn Prince of Peace, for listening once more to the glad tidings of the angels, and for imploring from God, through the Queen of Peace, the supreme gift of peace. For this reason… we have instituted the World Day of Peace, an observance that is gaining increasing support and is already bringing forth fruits of peace in the hearts of many” (no. 5).

Father, as we proclaim the Virgin Mary to be the Mother of Christ and the Mother of the Church, may our communion with her Son bring us to salvation.

ST. ELIZABETH ANN SETON (1774-1821)

This wife, mother and foundress of a religious congregation was born Elizabeth Ann Bayley on August 28, 1774 in New York City, the daughter of an eminent physician and professor at what is now Columbia University. Brought up as an Episcopalian, she received an excellent education, and from her early years she manifested an unusual concern for the poor. In 1794 Elizabeth married William Seton, with whom she had five children. The loss of their fortune so affected William’s health that in 1803 Elizabeth and William went to stay with Catholic friends at Livorno, Italy. William died six weeks after their arrival, and when Elizabeth returned to New York City some six months later, she was already a convinced Catholic. She met with stern opposition from her Episcopalian friends but was baptized a Catholic on March 4, 1805. Abandoned by her friends and relatives, Elizabeth was invited by the superior of the Sulpicians in Baltimore to found a school for girls in that city. The school prospered, and eventually the Sulpician superior, with the approval of Bishop Carroll, gave Elizabeth and her assistants a rule of life. They were also permitted to make religious profession and to wear a religious habit. In 1809 Elizabeth moved her young community to Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she adopted as a rule of life an adaptation of the rule observed by the Sisters of Charity, founded by St.

Vincent de Paul. Although she did not neglect the ministry to the poor, and especially to Negroes, she actually laid the foundation for what became the American parochial prepared textbooks for use in the schools; she also opened orphanages in Philadelphia and New York City. She died at Emmitsburg on January 4, 1821, was beatified by Pope John XXIII in 1963, and was canonized by Pope Paul VI in 1975.

Lord God, you blessed Elizabeth Seton with gifts of grace as wife and mother, educator and foundress, so that she might spend her life in service to your people. Through her example and prayers

ST. JOHN NEUMANN (1811-1860) Born on March 28, 1811 in Prachatitz, Bohemia (now in the Czech Republic), John Neumann realized a long cherished dream when he came to the United States and was ordained a priest in New York City in 1836. Four years later he joined the Redemptorists and subsequently labored in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio and the American frontier. He was the first Redemptorist to make religious profession in the United States. In 1852, at the age of 41, he was ordained bishop of Philadelphia, where he worked zealously for the establishment of parochial schools and of parishes for immigrants from Europe. He also inaugurated the Forty Hours Devotion

in the United States. Possessing special skill in languages, by the end of his life he had mastered twelve. He composed two catechisms in German and a Bible History for use in the parochial schools. Bishop Neumann had a special love for children, the Sisters and the immigrants. He is the first bishop from the United States to be canonized a saint. This was done by Pope Paul VI in 1977.

Father, you called St. John Neumann to labor for the gospel among the people of the New World. His ministry strengthened many others in the Christian faith: through his prayers may faith grow strong in this land.

BLESSED ANDRÉ BESSETTE (1845-1937)

This Holy Cross Brother, known as “Frere André,” has been credited with thousands of cures. He was the founder of St. Joseph’s Oratory in Montreal, Canada, perhaps the world’s principal shrine in honor of St. Joseph. When he died at the age of 91, it was estimated that close to a million people came to the Oratory to pay their last respects. He was beatified in 1982. André was the eighth child in a family of 12 and at baptism he was given the name Alfred. Orphaned at the age of 12, he tried his hand at various trades but was not successful in any of them. He could barely read and write and was sickly most of his life. At the age of 15 he became a Brother of Holy Cross but was rejected at the end of the novitiate. At the insistence of the bishop of

Montreal, however, Brother André was allowed to make religious profession. For forty years he worked as porter at the College of Notre Dame, until he was needed full time at the shrine of St. Joseph. People from all over Canada came to him for cures or for spiritual direction. The Oratory that he built in honor of St. Joseph was solemnly dedicated in 1955 and raised to the rank of a minor basilica.

Lord our God, friend of the lowly, you gave your servant, Brother André, a great devotion to St. Joseph and a special commitment to the poor and afflicted. Through his intercession help us to follow his

example of prayer and love and so come to share with him in your glory.

ST. BASIL (330-379) and ST. GREGORY NAZIANZEN (329/30-389/90)

In the revised Roman Calendar of 1969 this feast of two great saints of Cappadocia (now in Turkey) was assigned the date closest to the day of the death of St. Basil (January 1) because that of St. Gregory Nazianzen (January 25) falls on the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. Basil was born in 330 of a deeply Christian family (of the ten children, three became bishops: Basil, Gregory of Nyssa and Peter of Sebaste). His grandmother, Macrina, his parents and his eldest sister are all honored as saints. He

received an excellent education: at Caesarea (where he became a close friend of Gregory Nazianzen), at Constantinople, and later at Athens. After his baptism (358?) he entered the monastic life and visited numerous monasteries in the East. Later he founded a new cenobitic monastery where the monks dedicated themselves to prayer, intellectual pursuits and manual labor. He wrote two Rules for monastic life; one containing general legislation, which has been recognized by the Church as the basic Rule for monastic life in the East, and the other a collection of exhortations. He is therefore the primary legislator for Eastern monasticism. He became bishop of Cae-sarea (in central Turkey) in 370 and was a strong defender of the faith against the Arians. He was the champion of orthodoxy after the death of St. Athanasius in 373, concentrating especially on the dogmas of the Trinity and the Incarnation. He was a gentle, prudent bishop and the organizer of charitable works. Gregory Nazianzen also came from a very Christian family that produced numerous saints. After completing his studies in company with St. Basil, he reluctantly consented to be ordained to the priesthood by his father, St. Gregory Nazianzen the Elder, and ten years later, with equal reluctance and at the insistence of Basil, he was ordained bishop. Being of a contemplative and monastic disposition, he escaped from administrative duties into solitude as often as possible. He did, however, preside for a time over the First Ecumenical Council of Constantinople (381), but when the legitimacy of his transfer to Constantinople was contested, he resigned for the sake of peace and unity. His eloquent discourses on the Trinity earned him the title “the theologian.” He spent the last years of his life in relative seclusion.

God our Father, you inspired the Church with the example and teaching of your saints Basil and Gregory. In humility may we come to know your truth and put it into action with faith and love.
