READY TO STARTMANUAL MODE

IMPORTANT For the correct use of thesystem, only use your right foot to oper-ate the pedals.❒ Press the brake pedal❒ Start the engine❒ Push the gear lever A-fig.1 towards

(+) to engage first gear (if starting fromN or R simply move the lever to thecentral position) or R to engage re-verse.

❒ Release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal

❒ When driving, push the gear lever A to-wards (+) to engage a higher gear or to-wards (–) to engage a lower gear.

AUTOMATIC MODE

IMPORTANT For the correct use of thesystem, only use your right foot to oper-ate the pedals.

❒ Press the brake pedal❒ Start the engine

The car is equipped with an electronical-ly controlled manual gearbox known as“Dualogic” that has two operating modes:MANUAL and AUTO.

The gearbox consists of a conventionalmanual transmission to which an elec-tronically-controlled electrohydraulic de-vice that controls the clutch and gear shiftsautomatically has been added.

❒ Push the gear lever A-fig. 1 in A/M toengage the automatic mode or in R toengage reverse

❒ Release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal.

OPERATING MODE

The gearbox can work in two operatingmodes:

❒ the first is manual (MANUAL),where the driver decides directlywhen to shift gear;

❒ the second fully automatic (AUTO),where the system decides when toshift gear. ECO function (Economy)can be used with this mode reducingfuel consumption. To turn this func-tion on, press button E-fig. 3 locatedon the gearbox trim.

The selection of the gear and the oper-ating mode (MANUAL or AUTO) ismade using the control lever A-fig. 1 inthe centre console.

The system returns to the manual modeby returning the lever to the A/M posi-tion.

With the car at a standstill and the key re-moved, the lever may be movedwith/without the brake pedal pressed. Thesystem does not carry out any action af-ter the lever has been moved and remainsin the gear memorized before the key wasremoved.

IMPORTANT After starting, if there is anerror between the position of the lever andthe gear actually engaged, this will be sig-nalled, when the brake pedal is released, bya buzzer and by the letter N flashing in thedisplay until the inconsistency no longer ex-ists.

CONTROL LEVER

The control lever A, located in the dash-board, is the floating multistable type, i.e.it can take up three stable positions andthree unstable positions.

The three stable positions correspond toneutral (N), reverse (R) and the middleposition between the unstable positions(+) and (–).

The unstable positions, in other wordsthose which are abadonned as soon as thelever is released, are the position re-questing a higher gear (+), the position re-questing a lower gear (–) and the positionrequesting the automatic operating mode(A/M).

MANUAL OPERATION (MANUAL)

In this operating mode, the driver is re-sponsible for choosing the best gear ra-tio to engage, depending on the car op-erating conditions.

Proceed as follows to shift gear:

❒ move the lever to (+) position to en-gage a higher gear;

or

❒ move the lever to (–) position to en-gage a lower gear.

If the gear change request may adverselyaffect the correct operation of the engineand the gearbox, the system does not al-low the gear change but automaticallychanges down if the engine is idling (e.g.during deceleration).

In such cases the system warns the dri-ver of the impossibility of changing gear bymeans of a buzzer.

STEERING WHEEL CONTROLS (where provided) fig. 4On certain versions the change can bemanaged sequentially using (optional) con-trols on the steering wheel. To use the controls on the steering wheel,the gear lever should be in the middle po-sition between + and –:❒ moving the lever on the steering

wheel +: engagement of higher ratio;❒ moving the lever on the steering

wheel –: engagement of lower ratio.The engagement of a lower (or higher)gear ratio is only permitted if the enginespeed allows

AUTOMATIC OPERATION(AUTO)

To switch the automatic operation (AUTO)on/off, push lever A to the A/M position;activation will be signalled by the display ofthe word AUTO and the gear engaged fig. 5-6. In AUTO mode the system willchange gear depending on the speed of thecar, the engine speed and the intensity withwhich the accelerator pedal is pressed. Agear shift may be requested by operating thegear lever, but without necessarily switch-ing this mode off: this function, known as‘gear suggestion’, suspends the automaticmode for the time required to select the ra-tio requested by the driver.

INFORMATION ON DISPLAY

When the ignition key is turned to MAR,after around one second, display showsthe gear engaged and the last mode used(AUTO or MANUAL):

N = neutral;

1 = first gear;

2 = second gear

3 = third gear;

4 = fourth gear;

5 = fifth gear;

6 = sixth gear;

R = reverse.

If the ECO function is used the display willshow the letter E (Economy) next thegear engaged fig. 8-9.

IMPORTANT If the display does notshow the gear engaged after 10 secondswith the ignition key in MAR, turn the ig-nition to STOP, wait for the display toturn off and then repeat the manoeuvre.If the problem persists, contact the FiatDealership.

If necessary (e.g. when overtaking) the sys-tem changes down a gear or more in or-der to provide appropriate power andtorque for the acceleration requested bythe driver (this all takes place in automat-ic mode irrespective of whether or notthe ECO function is activated).

ENGINE STARTING

The system permits engine start-up with agear engaged and also with the gearbox inneutral (N); the brake pedal must alwaysbe pressed first.

It is advisable to place the gear lever inneutral (N) before starting the engine.

After start-up:

❒ the gearbox automatically engages neu-tral (N)

❒ the lever remains in the same positionas the last time the engine was turnedoff

❒ the display will show the letter (N) and,when the brake pedal is released, abuzzer together with the flashing of theletter (N), will signal any inconsistencybetween the position of the lever andthe gear engaged

❒ the gears that can be engaged are 1st,2nd or reverse (R).

IMPORTANT If start-up is requested withthe gearbox is a position other than N andwithout the brake pedal pressed, the dis-play shows a dedicated message see(“Warning lights and messages” para-graph). In this case, repeat the start-up ma-noeuvre, pressing the brake pedal.

IMPORTANT If start-up is requested withthe gearbox faulty, run the “Delayed start-up” procedure (see associated messages):turn the key to the AVV position for atleast 7 seconds with the brake depressedand the engine will start. The system willbe in recovery mode (highest gear per-mitted 3rd, automatic mode not available).If the engine does not start, contact theFiat Dealership.

IMPORTANT When the driver’s door isopened, the system activates the hydraulicsystem so that it is prepared for the sub-sequent starting of the enigne.

BUZZER WARNING

For safety reasons, a buzzer warningsounds when the car is parked with thegearbox in neutral (N) (the warningsounds when the ignition key is turned toSTOP);

With the car at a standstill, engine runningand (1), (2) or (R) gear engaged, the sys-tem turns on the buzzer and automatical-ly shifts the gearbox to neutral (N) when:

❒ the accelerator and/or brake pedals arenot operated for at least 3 minutes;

❒ the brake pedal is pressed for longerthan 10 minutes;

❒ the driver’s door is opened and the ac-celerator and brake are not operatedfor at least 1.5 seconds;

❒ a fault has been detected in the gear-box.

PARKING THE CAR

To park safely, it is essential to engage 1st

gear or reverse (R) gear with your footon the brake pedal. If parking on a slope,operate the brake pedal. It is also essen-tial to wait until the gear engaged disap-pears from the reconfigurable multifunc-tion display before releasing the brakepedal.

IMPORTANT NEVER leave your carwith the gearbox in neutral (N).

GENERAL WARNINGS

❒ With the car at a standstill and a gearengaged, keep the brake pedal presseduntil you decide to set off. Then releasethe brake and accelerate gradually;

❒ when parked for long periods with theengine running, it is advisable to keepthe gearbox in (N);

❒ in order to safeguard the efficiency ofthe clutch, do not use the acceleratorto keep the car still (e.g.: stopped on ahill); if the clutch overheats it coulddamage it so use the brake pedal or thehandbrake and only use the acceleratoepedal when setting off;

❒ use second gear only when you needmore control of take-off during ma-noeuvres on surfaces with poor grip;

❒ if, with reverse (R) engaged, you needto engage first speed or vice versa, on-ly change gear when the car has cometo a stop and the brake pedal ispressed;

❒ although very inadvisable, if the car isunexpectedly allowed to roll downhillwith the gearbox in neutral (N) the sys-tem will automatically engage the gearbest suited to car speed when a gearshift is requested to allow drive to becorrectly transmitted to the wheels;
