His service, of course, includes many years as a tournament director before he took over the magazine. The occasion was the Goodwill meeting, directed as always by ACBL’s Goodwill Chair- man, Aileen Osofsky, one of Francis’s biggest fans. In fact, when she started the Henry Francis portion of the program, she commented that her one regret was that she couldn’t call on him, as she has done so often, to help emcee. The outpouring of love and affection for Francis, including an emotional tribute from his wife Dorthy, clearly touched the man who put his imprint on the Bridge Bulletin and made it the most outstanding bridge publica- tion in the world. “They sounded as if they meant it,” Francis said of the parade of speakers who addressed the gathering. There was no doubt the accolades were sincere. ACBL President Howard Piltch, a New Englander, knew Francis when he lived in the Boston area. Piltch recalled that Francis, origi- nally from Malden, was “the first director to crack my knuckles.” Said Piltch: “What do you say about a man who embodies everything you believe in? Henry, I still think of you as the same kid from Malden who traveled the world and learned to change and to love. Thanks for everything.” Alan Truscott, bridge editor of The New York Times and a longtime associate of Francis, said he has no doubt that Francis’s retirement years will not be idle ones. “Henry is always very busy and usually trying to do more than one thing at a time,” Truscott said. Before joining the ACBL, Francis was an editor at the now-defunct Boston Herald Trav- eler. “There were many higher paying jobs Henry could have taken,” said Truscott, “but he went to the ACBL, which was very advan- tageous to us.” Truscott and Francis have met at dozens of world championships. They were playing in the Spingold Knockout Teams and fac- ing one of the biggest names in bridge -- Eddie Kantar, teamed with Billy Miller, Wafik Abdou, Wayne Stuart, Michael Shuster and Venkatrao Koneru. Remarkably, the youngsters were down only 24 at the halfway point of the match and feeling pretty good about it. Kantar was impressed after playing against Wolpert and Heller. “They’re really nice kids,” he said. “And they can play. The team captained by Patricia Cayne, which included two world cham- pions -- Jacqui Mitchell and Amalya Kearse, plus Karen Allison -- lost to an all-New England quartet. The victors were Carole Weinstein-Gorse, Margie Sullivan, Mary Savko and Kamla Chawla. Jan Martel, Judi Cody, Lynne Feldman, Carlyn Steiner, Florence Rotman and Barbara Hamman, seeded 11th, also ran into problems. They were defeated by Jane Segal, Judy Kay, Eunice Portnoy and Jacqueline Sincoff. Carol Pincus, Marcia Masterson, Broma Lou Reed, Janet Daling, Judy Randel and Florine Walters also are looking for some other game today. They were conquered by Judy Elbogen, Teddy Robins, Patricia Elms and Madie Brice. ELBOGEN is now the #12 seed. Teams captained by Joan Remey Moore and Nadine Wood, both of whom are members of the ACBL Board of Di- rectors, didn’t make the second round. MOORE’s #14 position was taken over by the Rebecca Clough squad, and WOOD’s #15 seed now belongs to the Ginny Schuett team. Sixteen teams remain in the run- ning. The event will run through Fri- day, with head-to-head 64-board matches all the way. Still going strong Monday was an attendance surprise -- it proved to be the biggest day of the tournament so far. There were 578 tables in play in the afternoon, the largest ses- sion to that point. But it was even bigger in the evening -- 587 tables. That brought the four-day total to 4886, 804 tables ahead of Albuquerque 1982. The team captained by Nick Nickell moved to the second round of the Spingold Knockout Teams despite los- ing a match in a three-way battle. Two other seeded teams, those led by Jeff Wolfson (#6) and Edgar Kaplan (#8), also survived losses in three-way matches. Nickell’s team, winners of the last four Spingolds, lost by 17 to the #87 seed, led by David Metcalf, but won their other match by 87 to advance. For more on the Metcalf upset, see page 5. The highest seed to fall on the open- ing day of the event was the #14 seed, captained by Sheila Ekeblad. They lost both matches in the three-way, one by 48 IMPs, the other by 2. Ekeblad was playing with husband Russ, George Steiner, Geoff Hampson and Eric Greco. Most of the other top seeds, includ- ing the teams captained by Jimmy Cayne, Richard Schwartz and Grant Baze, breezed through opening day. The powerhouse Wolfson team was in trouble at the halfway point in their three-way match. They were down by 55 to one team and 18 to another. Truscotts (including wife Dorothy) and the Franciseswill travel to Tunisia for the world championships, witha stop in Egypt on the way. “I can’t wait,” said Truscott,“to see Henry riding on a camel.”

Roy G. Green, the chief executive officer of theACBL, told the group that long before he took the reinsat Headquarters, “I considered Henry Francis synony-mous with bridge. At ACBL Headquarters, I learned toknow Henry as a man dedicated to bridge, to gettingthe job done, to getting the story and making the dead-lines. Henry Francis is a great credit to the ACBL andto bridge. Henry Francis is my friend.”

Kathie Wei-Sender, the official Ambassador ofBridge, said that when she first knew Francis, “I hatedhim.” Wei-Sender explained that at the time she wastrying to become a writer and Francis was her editor.“He kept telling me all my mistakes,” Wei-Sender said.

Finally, Wei-Sender went to Francis and asked himto be her teacher. “I’m still a lousy writer,” Wei-Sendersaid, “but he tried to teach me.”

Wei-Sender credited Francis with helping the Chineselearn about doing daily bulletins for their tournaments, andshe said she hopes to enlist Francis’s aid in writing a book.

“I won’t miss Henry, though,” Wei-Sender said,“because he’s still going to be here.”

Dorthy Francis praised her husband for his stead-fast loyalty and devotion. “Henry has taught me a lot,”Dorthy said. “He’s been my Rex Harrison. He’s taughtme a lot about me. He is the fairest, most objective, sweetest -- sometimes cranky -- person I’ve ever known.

“About three years ago, we had a major crisis inour family. It’s wonderful to know someone is there foryou, as Henry was.”

Brent Manley, who succeeded Francis as executiveeditor of the Bridge Bulletin, praised his former bossand thanked him for his friendship and fairness. Manleyalso read a poem composed by Francis’s son Bill, whowas a surprise guest at a retirement party for Francis inMemphis June 11.

Osofsky also read messages from Sue Emery, re-tired former Bridge Bulletin editor, and from RichardOshlag, who worked on the magazine in its early years.

Said Emery, “I would love to be there to give you abig bear hug. I miss you so much.”

Oshlag worked for the ACBL when Headquarterswas in Greenwich CT. Oshlag said that when it wasannounced that Francis, a newspaperman, had beenhired as the new executive editor of the Bridge Bulle-tin, the consensus was that “he’ll never make it in themagazine world.” Oshlag’s message made it clear heno longer agrees with that assessment. “You’ve madethe Bridge Bulletin a first-class act.”

The Goodwill meeting began with District DirectorBob Wingeard recognizing NABC Chairpersons JudyGucker and Gloria Kriegshauser for their outstanding work.

Wei-Sender introduced four bridge players fromChina who are visiting Albuquerque for the tournament.

Osofsky praised the Zero Tolerance program es-tablished by the Toronto unit and related that the ACBLBoard of Governors has approved a motion endorsingthe principles of the program.

When Osofsky introduced Green, who announcedlast week that he will retire as CEO in the near future, the CEO received a rousing ovation.

Although behind at the break, the young playersweren’t deterred -- and they weren’t playing in theSpingold just as a lark. They’re serious players.

Goodwill MessageWe’d like to think that everybody we meet

at this NABC will add to our enjoyment. Realis-tically, we know that won’t happen.

The key now is our response. Continue tobe polite, friendly -- whether it’s an opponent oryour partner.

It’s called rubbing out a problem with kind-ness.

Aileen Osofsky Chairman, Goodwill Committee

Oh, those spotsBridge is such a fascinating game in part because

you can never tell when something unusual might hap-pen with even the most inocuous hand. On this dealfrom the final of the top bracket of the Charity Knock-out Teams, one of the defenders made a subtle errorthat came back to haunt him in a big way. MalcolmBrachman, playing with Mike Passell, brought home agrand slam that should have gone down.

West led a low heart, and East discarded a diamond.Brachman had 12 top tricks and few prospects for a13th unless a squeeze materialized.

Hoping for the best, Brachman ran off all histrumps. East was fearful of discarding a spade becauseof dummy’s imposing spots. If, for example, Brachmanhad a singleton spade, he would be able to ruff out East’sspade honors and establish his 13th trick. East wasequally leery of throwing clubs, so he discarded morediamonds as Brachman kept playing hearts.

Everything would have been all right if West haddiscarded one diamond and his three low spades, buthe let go of a low club -- and it was curtains for thedefense. The club discard by West transferred sole re-sponsibility for guarding clubs to East, who was sub-jected to a black-suit squeeze in the end. Brachmanchalked up plus 1510. The ♣7 was his 13th trick.

After hearing that the deal was reported as a “funhand,” Brachman remarked, “It wasn’t fun until the 13thtrick.”

A surprise endplay --for declarer, that is

This is a hand that no doubt will be used in bridgepublications all over the world -- it is that bizarre. Itcomes from a knockout match.

Declarer won the opening club lead with dummy’squeen. Based on the fact that West, Jeff Miller, had longclubs, he took the right position in spades -- he won theace and finessed the 10. After cashing the king he cameback to hand with the ♥A and cashed the ♠Q -- andeverybody discarded! This was very puzzling -- wherewas the jack of spades?

Suddenly Dr. Mohan noticed the jack in his handand announced that he had failed to follow suit. Thedirector was called, and he allowed Dr. Mohan to re-place his diamond discard with the ♠J -- but the dia-mond had to remain on the table as a penalty card.

Miller had discarded a club on the second spade, aheart on the third and his singleton diamond on thefourth.

One of the options offered to declarer concerningthe penalty card was to demand or forbid the lead of adiamond by partner if he should gain the lead while thepenalty card was still on the table. Under such circum-stances, the offender has the right to return the penaltycard to his hand.

Well, the declarer thought he saw a way to increasehis tricks -- every IMP counts, you know. So he calledfor a CLUB!!

Miller took his ace, and declarer said, “I demandthat you lead a diamond!”

“I understand what you’re saying,” said Miller, “butI don’t have any diamonds.” And he quickly cashed fiveclubs to set the cold contract.

Is this what’s known as a revoking development?

ard Margolis of Melbourne FL, played together in theLife Master Pairs and got all the way to the final. Theyfinished 32nd -- a creditable performance consideringthat 450 pairs of Life Masters entered the event. To thebest of our knowledge, this was the first time a pair ofclergymen reached the final of the Life Master Pairs.

Hecrossed to dummy with the ♣A and drew the rest ofthe trumps with the king and 10. Then he led a clubto his hand and claimed -- sort of a declarer reversalin contrast to the usual dummy reversal. Making sixdiamonds was an absolute top -- and it moved therabbis all the way from 34th to 32nd.

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTHPass Pass 1♥ Dbl1♠ (1) 2♣ 2♥ 3♣All Pass(1) Alerted; showed three or more hearts and nothingabout spades.

The Facts: 3♣ made four, plus 130 for N-S. Northasked about the 1♠ Alert and was told it promised atleast three hearts and said nothing about spades. WhenNorth asked what the difference was between bidding1♠ or 2♥, he was told that 1♠ showed a better hand (4to 7 points) than a 2♥ bid did. Before the opening leadwas made E-W clarified that with three-card heart sup-port and zero points, West was required to bid.

The Director was called after the opening lead wasmade and the dummy was put down. The Director ruledthe E-W agreement had not been explained properly.During the twelfth round the Director informed bothpairs that the result would be changed to Average Plusfor N-S and Average Minus for E-W.

The Appeal: E-W appealed theDirector’s ruling. North, South and Eastattended the Committee. East stated thathe did not believe that N-S should beentitled to a double shot for a good boardbecause they had failed to bid 3NT.

North stated that had he known the West handcould be as weak as it was he would have bid 3♣. Hechose to bid 2♣ because he thought his partner’s handcould not produce enough for game with the openingbid and raise. North stated that it was not known thatWest had to bid with any hand containing three-cardheart support until the opening lead was made.

The Committee determined that the E-W partner-ship agreement was that any hand with three-card heartsupport had to bid and that 1♠, 2♣ or 2♦ all showedheart support, 4 to 7 points, indicated a lead preferencebut did not promise length in the suit bid. 2♥ wouldhave been weaker.

The Committee Decision: The Committee decidedthat misinformation was present and had likely affectedthe N-S result. With a full explanation, North may havechosen a 3♣ bid and South would likely have bid 3NT.Since it was also likely that nine tricks would be taken, the Committee changed the contract for both sides to3NT made three, plus 600 for N-S.

The Committee decided to educate E-W about theirobligations regarding full and complete disclosure ofpartnership agreements rather than retain the deposit.E-W were also warned that psyching this conventionalagreement was not permissible.

The Committee did not agree that N-S had taken adouble shot at a good result because they could not

ad

possibly know what the full E-W agreement was fromthe information they had been given at the table.

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTH1NT (1) Pass Pass

2♣ Pass 2♠ All Pass(1) 15-17; could be 14+

The Facts: 2♠ made three, plus 140 for E/W. Westfumbled with the Pass card and then bid 2♣. The Di-rector ruled that the table result would stand becausethe fumble did not suggest the 2♠ bid over any otheralternative.

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director’s ruling.South, East and West appeared before the Committee.

On the first board of the round, the auction camefairly quickly to West, who was still distracted

by a bad result on the previous round. He somewhat absent-mindedly reachedto the front part of the bid box and fin-gered the Pass card, lifting it a bit, butnot out of the box. East said he couldnot see which card West fingered. West

asked about the range of the 1NT bid. The 2♣ bid wasnatural. South maintained that pass was a logical alter-native for East and that the infraction should limit East’schoice of bids.

The Committee Decision: The Committee be-lieved West’s statement that his actions with the bid boxwere those of a player who had not yet considered hisbid. This was an infraction. Acting in such a way maytransmit considerable information.

The Committee evaluated the infraction, the infor-mation, and East’s action. The Commit-tee believed the infraction was bad. Theinformation transmitted by the infraction, however, was minimal. The Committeeand the players agreed the 2♣ bid wasclear-cut. If fingering the Pass card sug-gested bidding over 2♣, then West’s handdid not comport well with that suggestion.

The Committee decided the informa-tion conveyed by the infraction was inci-dental and not substantive. The Commit-tee allowed the table result, 2♠ made three, plus 140for E/W to stand. The Committee was ambivalent aboutwhether this type of decision should be based on thequality of the 2♠ bid. 2♠ was a good bid and had a

very good matchpoint rationale to support it.There was some division within the Committee

about whether 2♠ would have been allowed if the un-authorized information present was more substantial. The standards for permitting such a bid are high.

WEST NORTH EAST SOUTH3♥ Pass 4♣ (1) Pass4♥ (2) Pass 6♥ All Pass(1) Keycard asking; not Alerted; announced before theopening lead(2) Showed one keycard without the ♥Q

The Facts: 6♥ made six, plus 980 for E/W. Theopening lead was a low diamond. The 4♣ bid requiredan immediate Alert. After the announcement and priorto the opening lead South told the Director that he wouldhave made a lead-directing double of 4♣ had he knownit was artificial.

The Director ruled that the auction was unusualenough that South should have asked about the 4♣ bidif his call depended on knowing the meaning of thebid. The Director ruled (Law 40C) there was no dam-age and allowed the table result to stand.

(Note: The Directors made their ruling based ontheir understanding that the opening bid had been 2♥.The Directors pointed out that their ruling was morelikely to have been in favor of the non-offenders if theirunderstanding of the auction had been correct.)

The Appeal: N/S appealed the Director's ruling.North, South, and East appeared before the Commit-tee. South stated that after the 4♣ bid he paused brieflyand waited for an Alert from the opponents. The N/Sagreement was that if 4♣ was natural, double would

have been takeout and if 4♣ was artifi-cial, double would have been lead direct-ing. South felt uncomfortable about thepossibility of asking, finding out the bidwas natural and then passing. South statedhe would have doubled had he been told4♣ was artificial. He was not sure if theLaws placed him in jeopardy for askingthe meaning of a call that had not beenAlerted in this situation. He was unsureto what degree he was required to pro-

tect himself.East stated if South had doubled 4♣, West would

have passed denying first or second-round club control(they were not playing DOPI because they were using

Page 5: Brash young Canadians challenge big shots in Spingold Knockout · 2010. 8. 29. · Piltch recalled that Francis, origi-nally from Malden, was “the first director to ... Wafik Abdou,

a five-step system to show zero, one or two keycards).East further stated that she would then not bid slambecause she would now have known that a club wouldbe led and an ace was missing.

The Committee Decision: The Committee unani-mously agreed that there had been a failure to Alert the4♣ bid. In order to determine if there was damage as aconsequence of the infraction, the Committee had todecide if South was required to protect himself. TheCommittee was divided on this issue. One member be-lieved South should have asked about the meaning of4♣ if he needed to know. One member believed thepause to wait for a possible Alert met his obligation.Three members believed it was rea-sonable for South to assume the bidwas natural (his clubs were just badenough that this was possible). TheCommittee therefore decided thatthere was damage as a consequenceof the infraction.

The Committee decided thatSouth would have doubled a prop-erly Alerted 4♣ bid. The Committeethought it was probable a slam wouldbe bid. If West had seven hearts anddiamonds were favorable, 6♥ would be a reasonablecontract. After analyzing the play, the Committee de-cided the best line of play to make the contract wouldbe: ♣A, ♥K, heart to the ace, diamond to the queen, diamond ruffed by South, ♠A, spade. Unfortunately, this would have led to down three. The Committeechanged the contract to 6♥ down three, which was plus150 for N/S.

Dissenting Opinion: (Ron Gerard). South was re-quired to protect his side by asking about the meaningof 4♣. His hand suggested that 4♣ was not natural andhe was considering making a lead-directing double thatdepended on the non-natural meaning of 4♣. In fact, bridge logic would also suggest that 4♣ was not natu-ral, since it is unlikely to get out of partner’s suit with-out bidding game. Since South did not inquire aboutthe meaning of 4♣, he cannot get a second chance todo so because of the failure to Alert.

At this level, players should know that they do nottransmit unauthorized information by asking questionsbecause the Laws do not allow partner to take advan-tage of that information. However, E/W should not profitfrom their failure to Alert. The result should have beenN/S minus 980, E/W minus 150.

It was the thrill of a lifetime for the six players on theSpingold team captained by David Metcalf of Newton MA.One of the teams they drew in their opening three-waymatch was the squad captained by Nick Nickell, the teamthat has won this event four times in a row.

AND THEY BEAT NICKELL!No, NICKELL was not eliminated from the

Spingold. Only one team was eliminated in each three-way match, and NICKELL won their other match andmoved into the Round of 64.

But that took nothing away from the thrill of de-feating Nickell, Richard Freeman, Bob Hamman, BobbyWolff, Eric Rodwell and Jeff Meckstroth.

After the first quarter it looked as if it was going tobe all NICKELL -- METCALF trailed by 26. But theycut the margin to 14 by halftime. Then they really pouredit on in the third quarter, gaining 32 IMPs to go aheadby 18. They lost an IMP over the last quarter, but thatstill was good enough for a 17-IMP victory.

METCALF also won their other match -- by 19 IMPs.Now they’re in the Round of 64 -- and their next opponentis the No. 2 seed, the team captained by Steve Robinson.

Playing with Metcalf were Bill Irvine of QuincyMA, Kevin Flynn of Paris, France, Tom Rozinski ofNew York City, Walter Fontaine of North ProvidenceRI, and Tony Petronella of North Kingstown RI.

This is one of the boards on which they scored amajor gain.

Albuquerque -- hostto the world in ‘94Albuquerque is one of a handful of North American

• Paul and Linda Lewis played against a very goodteam in a second-round match in the Rosenblum CupTeams. One of their opponents played a deal particu-larly well and was making remarks that -- while said ina friendly way -- could easily have been interpreted asmale chauvinism. Then came this deal:
