    NOTE: The chain does not need to be removed from the final drive sprocket.

    . Install Tool (A) on final drive planetary carrier (1) as shown. Using a wrench turn final drive planetary carrier (1)ounterclockwise while rotating the rear brake spindle (2) counter clockwise. Stop the rotation immediately after thehain has fallen off the rear brake sprocket. Use Tool (B) (not shown) to pull the chain from the final drive sprocketowards the brake.

    2. Mark and identify the brakes for installation purposes. Remove 29 of 30 bolts (4), the washers, and bracket (3) frobrake housing (5).

    . Release the pressure on Tooling (C). Remove Tooling (C) from block (6).

    Release the pressure on the brakes prior to disconnecting the tube

    assemblies. Failure to release the pressure could result in personalinjury.

    4. Disconnect two tube assemblies (7) and (8) from brake housing (5). Cap and plug all connections to avoid systemontamination.

    5. Put Tooling (D) in position on brake housing (5) as shown. Remove bolt (4) and the washer from brake housing (

    6. Position Tool (E) to brake housing (5) as shown. Secure Tooling (E) to a hoist. Remove rear brake housing (5) froandem drive housing (9). The weight of rear brake housing (5) is 912 kg (2009 lb).

    7. Remove O-ring seal (10) from brake housing (5).

    NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the brake.

    8. Make sure all components of the brake are clean of dirt and foreign material prior to installation.

    9. Check all components for wear or damage and replace if necessary.

    0. Lubricate all O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant being sealed.

    1. Position a lifting sling around chain (11) as shown. Put the remaining end of the lifting sling through the top ofandem drive housing (9), for installation purposes.

    2. Install O-ring seal (10) to cover (5).

    3. Position Tool (E) to brake housing (5) as shown. Secure Tooling (E) to a hoist. Install rear brake housing (5) toandem drive housing (9). The weight of rear brake housing (5) is 912 kg (2009 lb).

    4. Apply 4C-9507 Retaining Compound to the threads of bolt (4). Install bolt (4) and the washer to brake housing (Remove Tooling (D) and (E) from tandem drive housing (9). Tighten bolt (4) to torque of 900 ± 100 N·m (662 ± 74t).

    5. Connect two tube assemblies (7) and (8) to brake housing (5).

    6. Apply 4C-9507 Retaining Compound to the threads of the remaining 29 bolts (4). Install bracket (3), 29 bolts (4nd the washers to brake housing (5). Tighten bolt (4) to torque of 900 ± 100 N·m (662 ± 74 lb ft).

    7. Put Tooling (C) in position on block (6) as shown. Using Tooling (C) release the rear brakes.

    NOTICE

    Care must be taken not to apply more than 3790 kPa (550 psi) to thebrakes. Failure to do so could result in component damage or brakefailure.

    . Put the brake in position on wood blocks. Remove eight bolts (1) and retainer (2) from spacer (3). If necessary uswo bolts (1) as forcing bolts to remove retainer (2).

    2. Remove shims (4) from retainer (2).

    . Remove spacer (3) from spindle (5).

    4. Put three lifting slings in position on sprocket (6) as shown. Secure the lifting slings to a hoist. Remove sprocket rom spindle (5). The weight of sprocket (6) is 91 kg (200 lb).

    5. Remove six bolts (8) and the washers from cover (7).

    6. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to cover (7) as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist. Removover (7) from housing (9). The weight of cover (7) is 139 kg (306 lb).

    7. Remove roller bearing cone (10) from cover (7).

    8. Remove roller bearing cup (11) from cover (7).

    9. Remove O-ring seal (12) from housing (9). Remove spacer (13), damper assembly (14), the 13 plates, and the 12riction discs from spindle (5).

    0. Remove brake hub (15) from spindle (5).

    1. Install two (3/8-16 x 3 in) forcing bolts (16) to piston (17) as shown.

    2. Slowly and evenly screw two forcing bolts (16) against the housing to lift piston (17) high enough to install fourB-4627 cotter pins (18) in four spring guides (19) as shown. Remove two forcing bolts (16) from piston (17). Remour pins (20) from four spring guides (19).

    3. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to piston (17) as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist. Rem

    There is spring tension on piston (17). Slowly and evenly, screw forcingbolts (16) against the housing to remove the pins that hold piston (17) inposition. Care should be taken when releasing the spring tension on thepiston. Failure to do so could result in personal injury or death.

    piston (17) from housing (9). The weight of piston (17) is 25 kg (55 lb).

    4. Remove external and internal ring seals (21) from piston (17). Remove external and internal ring seals (22) frompiston (17).

    5. Insure that four 3B-4627 cotter pins (18) are in the position as shown. Slowly and evenly remove 12 bolts (23) ahe washers that hold housing (24) to housing (9).

    6. Mark and identify the location of housing (24) for installation purposes.

    7. Position Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device on housing (24) as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist.Remove housing (24) and piston (25) as a unit from housing (9). The weight of the housing (24) and piston (25) as aunit is 34 kg (75 lb).

    There is spring tension under piston (25). To release the spring tension,slowly and evenly remove bolts (23) that hold housing (24) and piston(25) to housing (9). Care should be taken when releasing the springtension. Failure to do so could result in personal injury or death.

    8. Remove housing (24) from piston (25). If necessary use two (3/8-16 x 3) in forcing bolts in housing (24) to remopiston (25).

    9. Remove external and internal ring seals (26) from housing (24). Remove external and internal ring seals (27) frohousing (24).

    20. Using Tool (B), remove cotter pin (18), spring guide (28), and spring (29) from piston (25).

    There is spring tension on spring guides (28). Tooling (B) must be usedto release the spring tension on spring guides (28). Failure to do so couldresult in personal injury or death.

    21. Repeat Steps 20 on the remaining three spring guides (28).

    22. Remove 18 springs (30) and seal (31) from housing (9).

    23. Position Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to housing (9) as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist.Remove housing (9) from spindle (5). The weight of housing (9) is 265 kg (584 lb).

    24. Remove duo-cone seal (32) from housing (9).

    25. Remove roller bearing cup (33) from housing (9).

    26. Remove duo-cone seal (34) from seal retainer assembly (35).

    27. Remove ring (36) from spindle (5).

    28. Remove roller bearing cone (37) and seal retainer assembly (35) from spindle (5).

    29. Remove O-ring seal (38) and four pins (39) from seal retainer assembly (35).

    NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the brake.

    29. Make sure all components of the brake are clean of dirt and foreign material prior to assembly.

    0. Check all components for wear or damage and replace if necessary.

    1. Lubricate all O-ring seals and bores lightly with the lubricant being sealed.

    2. Install O-ring seal (38) and four pins (39) to seal retainer assembly (35).

    3. Install seal retainer assembly (35) to spindle (5). Heat roller bearing cone (37) in a oven, to temperature of 135°C275°) for no more than one hour. Install roller bearing cone (37) to spindle (5).

    4. Install ring (36) to spindle (5).

    5. Using Tool (D), install duo-cone seal (34) to seal retainer assembly (35).

    6. Lower the temperature of roller bearing cup (33) to a temperature of -40°C (-40°F) for no more than one hour.nstall roller bearing cup (33) to housing (9).

    7. Using Tool (D) install duo-cone seal (32) to housing (9).

    8. Position Tooling (C) and a suitable lifting device to housing (9) as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist.nstall housing (9) to spindle (5). The weight of housing (9) is 265 kg (584 lb).

    9. Install 18 springs (30) and seal (31) to housing (9).

    There is spring tension on spring guides (28). Tooling (B) must be usedto apply the spring tension on spring guides (28). Failure to do so couldresult in personal injury or death.

    40. Using Tool (B) install spring (29), spring guide (28), and cotter pin (18) to piston (25).

    41. Repeat Step 40 for the remaining three spring guides (28).

    42. Install internal and external ring seals (27) to housing (24). Install internal and external ring seals (26) to housing24).

    43. Install housing (24) to piston (25).

    44. Position Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device on housing (24) as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist.nstall housing (24) and piston (25) as a unit in housing (9). The weight of housing (24) and piston (25) as a unit is 3

    kg (75 lb).

    45. Position four 3B-4627 cotter pins (18) as shown. Install 12 bolts (23) and the washers to housing (24). Slowly anvenly, tighten bolts (23) in a crisscross pattern.

    46. Install internal and external ring seals (22) to piston (17). Install internal and external ring seals (21) to piston (1

    47. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to piston (17) as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist. Instapiston (17) to housing (19). The weight of piston (17) is 25 kg (55 lb).

    48. Install four pins (20) to four spring guides (19) as shown.

    There is spring tension under piston (25). To apply the spring tension,slowly and evenly install bolts (23) that hold housing (24) and piston(25) to housing (9). Care should be taken when applying the springtension. Failure to do so could result in personal injury or death.

    49. Install two 3/8-16 forcing bolts (16) to piston (17) as shown. Slowly and evenly screw two forcing bolts (16)gainst the housing to lift piston (17) high enough to remove four 3B-4627 cotter pins (18) from four spring guides s shown. Slowly and evenly remove two forcing bolts (16) from piston (17).

    50. Install brake hub (15) to spindle (5).

    51. Lubricate friction discs lightly with brake oil prior to assembly. Install the 13 plates and the 12 friction discs in

    There is spring tension on cotter pins (18). Slowly and evenly screw twoforcing bolts (16) against the housing to remove cotter pins (18). Careshould be taken when releasing the spring tension on cotter pins (18).Failure to do so could result in personal injury or death.

    52. Install O-ring seal (12) to housing (9). Install spacer (13) to spindle (5).

    53. Lower the temperature of roller bearing cup (11) to a temperature of -40°C (-40°F) for no more than one hour.

    NOTE: The brake with the sprocket mounted flush with the roller bearing cone is shown above. This brake should bmounted to the front of the tandem housing. The brake with the sprocket mounted at the end of the spindle should bmounted to the rear of the tandem housing.

    57. Put three lifting slings in position on sprocket (6) as shown. Secure the lifting slings to a hoist. Install sprockets o spindle (5). The weight of sprocket (6) is 91 kg (200 lb).

    58. Install spacer (3) to spindle (5).

    NOTE: Do not install the shims at this time.

    59. Install retainer (2) and two of eight bolts (1) to spacer (3) as shown. Tighten two bolts (2) to a torque of 30 N·m b ft).

    60. Put Tooling (E) in position in housing (9) and release the brake. Rotate the sprocket two revolutions and retorqu

    wo bolts (1) to a torque of 50 N·m (37 lb ft). Continue to retorque and turn the sprocket until the torque stabilizes aN·m (37 lb ft).

    61. In the two forcing bolt holes of retainer (2), use Tool (F) to measure the distance from the top of retainer (2), to top of the spindle as shown. Take the average of the two dimensions and record this as dimension (a).

    62. Remove two bolts (1) and retainer (2) from the spindle. Measure the thickness of retainer (2) in two locations. The average of the two dimensions and record this as dimension (b). Subtract dimension (b) from dimension (a) to

    obtain dimension (c). Dimension (c) +/-.05 mm (.002 in) is the amount of shims required to obtain the correct bearinpreload.

    63. Apply 7M-7456 Bearing Mount Compound to the threads of eight bolts (1). Install shims (4), retainer (2), and ebolts (1) to spacer (3). Tighten bolts (1) to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (199 ± 29 lb ft).

    End By:

    a. install brake

    NOTICE

    To release the brake manually, do not exceed 3790 kPa (550 psi).Failure to exceed 3790 kPa (550 psi) could cause component damageand brake failure.
