Dear Friends,

“PRIORITIES...A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the size of house I lived in or the kind of car I drove...but the world may be different because I was important in the life of a child.”

Those are the words on the poster that hangs in our administrative office. These words are also the driving force behind our mission at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson.

I speak to so many people that praise our programs and want to help but feel they have nothing to give. I tell them by supporting our programs with a gift, now or a planned gift for the future they can and do effective the lives of all our members. Their gift can truly make a difference in the lives of those we reach each day.

Our organization has become so much more than a simple after school program, we have become a place that starts our youth on the path to setting goals and reaching dreams they never knew they had.

As we move into our 25th year of service, our programming must continue to offer the most innovative and challenging opportunities for our members. We must constantly work on making our programs fresh, exciting and fun. Our program has become nationally-recognized for providing innovative solutions to many of the problems facing our youth in our community.

As we wind down our “Great Futures” campaign, please consider a tax deductible donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hutchinson. You will be providing youth a place to belong, a place they can call their own, caring adults who know their names and the chance at a bright and healthy future.

Friends, Donors, and Supporters,

Seven years ago, I was asked to join the Board of the Boys & Girls Club. I felt honored. I thought about it and decided I wanted to be involved to help as many boys and girls as possible. What I have learned about this Club is one of the most positive experiences in our community.

I have met young scholars, athletes, leaders in school, chefs, gardeners, computer gurus, quilters and really fun kids! They are also developing skills in welding, woodworking, electricity and many relevant 21st Century careers in the Club’s STEaM program.

I am in awe of the staff members who are exceptionally dedicated, caring and creative. Working with fellow Board members has given me new friendships and respect for the variety of leaders we have in Hutchinson. I have such high regard for Skip Wilson, Lance Patterson and Ryan Corwin.

Thanks to everyone for sharing the joys and challenges throughout the years. And thank you - the Donors and supporters who are keeping the doors open. As Skip Wilson has said, we absolutely could not do this without your support.

Althought this is my final year on the board, the Boys & Girls Club will always have a special place in my heart—thank you for the opportunity to serve this organization, these kids, and you.

When Brandi Henderson (left) returned to Hutchinson, a single mother with 2 daughters, finding a place for Justice (right) and Felicity to go after school that was productive was very important.

At the time Brandi had no idea that the program she chose, the Boys & Girls Club, would have such an impact on her children’s lives.

Justice Henderson is currently a15 year old Hutchinson High School student, and a volunteer at the Boys & Girls Club.

“She has always been a shy person,” Henderson said, reflecting on her daughter Justice. “Mr. Cohen [STEM Director] really pulled her out of that and got her hands busy and it has impacted the classes she is taking in high school.”

While the Boys & Girls Club has helped offer some guidance and direction for Justice, helping others is something that Justice frequently does as a volunteer at the Shadduck Park site, where she spends a great deal of time in the STEM room.

“I like to help with the STEM class with Mr. Cohen,” Justice said. “No matter what we do, he always tries to make it as fun as he can.”

Whether she is helping build a shed, gardening boxes, or helping a younger member learn a new skill, she is always safe at the Club, something that provides assurance to Brandi.

“I know [they are] in good hands—they love coming [to the Club].” Brandi said.

And for a single mother, that stability is something that is very

important.As a Club member, Justice has

participated in programming built to ensure that she has a Great Future ahead. She has been afforded the opportunity to learn new skills outside the classroom, and develop social skills through the guidance of caring adult mentors.

Most 13 year olds would not even dream about riding their bicycle across town in subzero temperatures, but for Junior Staff member Chris Loya, the question did not even cross his mind.

A Club member since 2007, Loya knows a thing or two about the Boys & Girls Club, a place where he feels safe and encouraged.

“I come to the Club every day.” Loya said. “It is motivational to go somewhere you like going, even if it is the middle of winter.”

That, combined with his sense of responsibility and dedication to the Club is the reason that in December, when facing wind chills in the negatives, Loya hopped on his bicycle and pedalled to the Shadduck Park Unit, reporting for his Junior Staff duties.

For Chris, the Boys & Girls Club represents a world of opportunity. Opportunities that are simply not available to youth his age elsewhere.

Loya said. “You can volunteer, go on field trips, and get ahead by learning things that you normally wouldn’t at your age.”

Not only is Chris afforded the opportunity to gain soft skills reenforced by his experiences at the Club, he is able to learn technical skills by participating in STEM programming.

“With STEM you can go on field trips, which I do,” Loya said. “It is definitely more than you learn outside of [the Club]. There is a choice to learn at the Club.”

Chris can see that the choices

that he makes now impact his future. His choices, along with excellent programming designed to increase his academic success, leadership skills, and awareness of how to live a healthy lifestyle will help guide him and help him to continue building skills that will be valuable in the future. His future looks bright.
